Whenever we think of Perchta or Krampus, Berchthold or the Buttnmandl, as „demons“ and „devil-like spirits“, we must recognize that we are thinking within the cultural framework of the monotheistic traditions. It is thus important to understand that to the pre-christian populations of the Alps, Perchta or Krampus were not in any way related to devil-like folklore. There is no ethnographic evidence that suggests that. However, there is ethnographic evidence that points to a deeply ingrained animistic cosmovision, where an other-than-human ancestry was an integral aspect of the former pre-christian identity and human-animal interfaces. Such beliefs have been widely recorded in Eurasia. (e.g. Erica Hill, 2011, 2013). In other words, what we perceive as horror-like appearances of „the wild hunt“ today, were most likely mythological manifestations of an anthro-zoomorphic cosmology, where the borders between „human“ and „animals“ were fluid, almost to the point of being non-existent to the non-anthropocentric perception that is nowadays understood as „Animism“ (Nurit Bird-David, 1999, Tylor, 1871, p. 309). . . This is Kevin and today on Krampusnacht I'd like to introduce you to my long-term research project alpinelachsner.com I am currently writing an ethnographic case study dealing with the cult of Perchta, her early medieval records, the earliest ethnographic records of her, including her function and mythological motif. As mentioned by @perennial_pyrenees this book will mark a cornerstone of my ethnographic research, dealing with folklore and alpine customs that I myself am familiar with. This book will discuss early medieval accounts on who and what Perchta is, including her partner known as Berchthold, and the mythological motif of "the wild hunt" and the concept of the "Rauhnächte". Furthermore, this book will form the basis of a long academic research paper that I will be working on, as well. This research paper deals with the question of a hunter-gatherer substrate in European ethnographies; e.g. the European winter masquerades and their associated folklore. As you know, European Mythology has been shaped, formed by various societal and ecological changes ever since the repopulation into the continent from two different regions: Spain and France, and western Russia. I am working out a hypothesis that deals with surviving remnants of an older, archaic cosmology that has been ethnographically well documented in most of northern Eurasia, but not in western Europe. For this, I've been working and exchanging my research with numerous professor's who have conducted field-research with hunter-gatherer cultures (e.g., the Evenk in Russia). https://www.instagram.com/p/B5sfnnUHqD3/?igshid=15sqb4g7nfbm0

Though completely out of the norm for my shop, I have always loved the blue whale. Though I have never been anywhere near one, when I imagine being near one - I don’t feel smaller, I feel more significant ❤ . . So Black Friday is coming soon and though I do participate, it is not a public sale. You won’t even see slashed prices on my website. This means that you need to be on my email list to gain access. . . This is the one day a year that I take a financial hit for my customers so that they can stock up on all the things they have been wanting for so long, without having to spend so much money. . . This is my way of offering the biggest from-the-heart thank you I possibly can. And this is why the sale is not available to the public. . . Whether you purchase from The Wicked Griffin or not, I do hope that this year you choose to shop small and from your favorite artists. I know I speak for all when I say words cannot convey how much your support means ❤ https://www.instagram.com/p/B5P-aUZnGcy/?igshid=1efyuso4ko1hg
It feels so refreshing working with a brand new medium: purpleheart wood! This is the very first time in Wicked Griffin history that I have offered anything other than metal. Yes, these are available now 👍🏻 . . You may have noticed that I have slightly strayed from my normal collections of 15-30 new items once or twice a year. Moving from Arizona to Ohio, being 6 months pregnant now (with a boy!) has made it very difficult to plan for and create full blown collections. . . So for the time being, I will be releasing items randomly every now and then when I get the chance 🙂 https://www.instagram.com/p/B5OH7HGHR9k/?igshid=14xawvuahadrz
This Krampus pendant is quite special for us considering its meaning and background story. We are launching this beautiful pendant today and this little Krampus is handmade to order in our Etsy shop or website www.thewickedgriffin.com - Original Krampus image created by and used with permission from @missmonstermel . . But now about my love for Kramperl... When I was a young child, I was fascinated by the masks, the costumes and the loud noise of the bells, but more importantly, the local lore of the Rauhnächte, which is still quite popular in many rural areas of the Alps on the Bavarian and the Austrian side, made me imagine the wildest things in my mind. . . Looking back now, I can say that these traditions that I hold so dear with vivid memories, is what made me interested and fascinated by pre-christian culture and mythology. I asked someone who participated in the Krampuslauf, where they come from, and like many locals still believe, he said that they were of Celtic origin. . . And this is what lead me onto my path of in-depth reading, and discovering the heritage that I grew up with. More importantly, it sparked a deep passion for pre-history, comparative mythology and ethnographic reports so that I may come a bit closer to understanding these traditions. . . Today, I work with other researchers and Anthropologists, we share and exchange information and I will be also involved in other projects, including my research project alpinelachsner.com, among others. These traditions are still not fully understood. This is what makes them so fascinating. . . Much of my research started almost 10 years ago, and it wouldn't have happened without Krampus, Perchta and the Buttnmandl, without Berchthold on her side and the Klausen and Bärbeletreiben, that might be a surviving substrate from a much older cosmology and belief-system, ... reaching into the pre-neolithic stone age. . . This is a special piece with a special background, without him I also would not have met so many researchers who share the same passion. When I think of home and childhood, Krampus and Perchta is certainly a huge part of it. https://www.instagram.com/p/B44uLxyH9Ud/?igshid=1fx0oaokuj6ql
Brass, copper and silver Ravens custom made with your choice of Elder Futhark Rune ❤️ This video was captured a few days ago before all the snow, but I am happy to announce I was finally able to snap some photos of this mystery item I was talking about - and it will be available sometime this week ❄️ . . Side note and some unfortunate news 😕 I went to place an order for more of my foldable Rune meaning business cards and the company is no longer making foldable business cards. This means that once I am out of my current stock I won’t be able to replace them. I am, however, going to be working on a similar version that’s a square, but doesn’t fold. Hopefully they will suffice ❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/B4z8z2ZHKJ_/?igshid=197bjbcl5sgov

In short, as I stated in this video, I am not here to tell you what you should and should not buy. But I am going to call out a fraud when I see one and for years I have kept quiet. Now this stuff is on Etsy under the claim of being handmade. Now is when I speak up. Don’t be fooled. I’ve been here almost 2 months and it still amazes me how much nicer the natural light is for pictures compared to Arizona. . . You wouldn’t believe what I had to go through in AZ just to get a picture, hahaha. I’m talking black out curtains, on the floor and in the closet! 😂 . . Anyways I hope you’re having a great weekend! I myself am spending it getting caught up on orders ❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/B31_3Rqnhvw/?igshid=1xe3bl2e10iuf

Even 10,000 years ago, Eurasian hunter-gatherers looked up into the night sky and were fascinated by what they saw. As several scholars have worked out, the myth called "the cosmic hunt", which depicts 7 hunters chasing a celestial Elk, Bear or alternatively, sheep or buffalo, reaches far back into the late Pleistocene, making the "cosmic hunt" as one of the oldest myths recovered and ethnographically documented today. More importantly; this is a celestial event associated with several star constellations. Even within the framework of Indo-European mythologies, there are hints and remnants that certain myths are projected skyward; up to the stars. The world-tree, for example, could stand for polaris, or alternatively, the milky way. And when we recognize what central and essential role the motif of the axis mundi holds both in the practice of animistic ceremonialism and shamanism, it may also make us understand the myth of shamanic flight in the sky; both having survived in European Ethnography as a witch sitting on a broom, or a shaman journeying the 3 divided world pillar on a horse or reindeer in Siberia... Today is autumn equinox. This is the time when the sun is crossing the celestial equator. This event has been known astronomically at least since the Neolithic, when the first farmers build the gigantic megaliths to be found from the UK, Spain, France to the Urals, northern Africa where traditional berber-paganism has been practiced, and even to the coast lines of southern Korea. Southern Korea, in fact, has a high density of megaliths, most notably known at sites such as Hwasun and Gangwha. Some of these megaliths have been discovered to align with summer and winter solstice. To be a Stone Age astronomer would have been quite a difficult and complex task as well. The megalith at Cairn T, Loghcrew, Ireland, for example may have been used to observe both solar and lunar events, as the chambers are beautifully illuminated and the many engravings inside the chamber are illuminated by the rising sun. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2wzPdTnfPy/?igshid=17qkp0h9770jo
