Only 13 percent of video games are readily playable and accessible. No other form of media is as endangered as video games. There is no legal path to preserve or archive video games. You can go to libraries and archives for books years out of print. You can rent a movie or download a pdf. There is no legal equivalent for video games. Games companies do not double as archival organisations and they never will. They have never been about preserving. They are about selling. Which is not inherently evil compared to anyone else but they along with the law are directly preventing archivers and preservationists from doing their job and allowing this entire medium to be experienced in the future.
Think of some of the most influential video games of all time. How many of them can you play right now. Without piracy. How many of these could your not very technology literate friend play. How do you think this is affecting not only the wider industry now but also people in the future. And for completely arbitrary meaningless reasons.
“I have a cigarette every night when I go over my notes. It's something of a ritual.”

literary analysis being posited as this boring grueling penance that only miserable people insist on is very dumb as an idea but its even more dumb to me, the guy who gets so excited about it that he has to clap and pound his fists against the ground and walk in circles at a dizzying speed unbeknownst to man

"It's annoying that we recognize that children need things like a summer break and several vacations a year but we think it makes sense to have adults work for 60 years with maybe 2-3 weeks off a year if you're lucky" end image description.
People really have short memories. The unionists, socialists & communists managed to negociate paid vacation leave in 1936 in France. If you read Regency romance, you'll know that domestic worker would get an half-day off work a month (on a Sunday) or something to that extent. The concept of vacation, of days off work, is very recent. But then again, before the industrial revolutions, what work could be done without sunlight? The length of each day was shorter. And many places had days of celebrations where there was no work. No rules applying to every place, because places used to run differently on the local level.
Not the summer break for school, though. Every place that established mandatory schooling had to adapt summer breaks.
But what we now know as "summer break" is not meant to be a vacation, that's not what it was intented to be when school were first established (at least in Europe, I don't know about the rest). There was a huge resistance to sending children to school, children (read here boys) could simply not be spared from working in the fields and in the farm most of the day all year. When setting schools up, the policy makers knew they could only push people so far, so they would not ever try to have school continue running during the busiest time of year, harvest season. There would be no point, they would not have anyone in.
Harvest season is an all-hands on deck situation. It's hard labour, that's why at the end of it people have big communal celebratiions (those celebrations are all that remains in many places).
It's also the reason that now seasonal labour in the farming sector is one of the hardest, most dangerous job, reserved for the poorest people who have no other choice. Because it's not meant to be done this way.
A few people are not supposed to shoulder the burden of picking up the food we all eat, all (most of) the people are supposed to make an effort once a year to pick up the vegetables & the fruits, it goes a lot faster that way, it just makes sense if we don't live in a capitalistic world, but instead rich country specifically encourage a specific kind of migrants to do back-breaking labour for scraps.
this might be a hot take but i think we should still be required to wear masks on airplanes
we need to start hounding people into wearing masks again. why aren’t you wearing a mask on public transit? why aren’t you wearing a mask in the crowded grocery store? why aren’t you wearing a mask in the literal hospital? if you’re half as progressive as you claim to be you’d require masks at your busy events. you’re not a progressive if you’re leaving out the immunocompromised. plus covid can still fuck you up even if you’re perfectly healthy and had your vaccines. wouldn’t you rather be unnecessarily cautious than risk getting yourself or someone else sick? put your mask back on in the crowded mall. coward

Your daily reminder that inaccessibility isn’t just a little bother to disabled people but is part of a violent ableist culture that bars disabled people from many parts of life and treats them as unimportant and unneeded
Accessibility should not be an afterthought, especially when it comes to radical events

The reply is by @/inplayruin and reads: “I could almost certainly win a sanctioned boxing match against any wild bear. Not to brag, but I would probably win the fight in less than a minute. As soon as the bell was rung, I would be immediately mauled. But biting is a foul in boxing. The bear would be disqualified for committing an intentional foul that caused injury, and I would be awarded the win. Presumably posthumously.” END ID]
as a trans community, i really think we need to discuss the ways in which some gender envy / straight-up dysphoria is totally wrapped up in internalized fatphobia, so much so that they cannot be disentangled. but i don't know if we're ready for that conversation tbh.
