I was given four hundred provisos. Jack had to be a military man, heroic and dashing, good with guns. And, although it wasn’t a big part of the brief, he was pansexual. I also knew that he was on board specifically because there was going to be a grand battle in the last episode and they needed to have a soldier around to do the soldiery bits. The idea of him being this kind of intergalactic conman was mine.

Wait, so is THAT why they never referenced Jack’s missing memories again? This makes a lot of sense, because the conman/missing memories bit always was the most undeveloped/far-fetched part of Jack’s character. And I was wondering if there was a reason it’s never dealt with (other than OBSESSIVELY being used as a plot in fics…lol) But if it was a Moffat creation and not part of RTD’s outline for him, it all makes a lot more sense.

We’ll just call this a companion to my other character PSA. Repeat after me, kids…Moffat did NOT create Jack Harkness. All he injected were the bits that were never, ever brought up again. Everything else was RTD (as well as added bits from Julie Gardner and John Barrowman himself). Please stop using Jack Harkness as a shining example of Moffat’s brilliant characterization and gender/sexual equality.
