Imagine when a lukewarm take is so wrong that the author rightfully, publicly drags it....

"Say you've never read Sandman without saying you've never read Sandman."

It's definitely been a week. How did it get so normal and sensible on Tumblr, while the grumpy shouty people are off on Twitter? So odd...

So... Gamestop’s Stock Price and all that

This isn’t a game dev thing, but it is interesting and I thought it would make for some interesting reading (and also probably serve as a warning - you really probably shouldn’t buy gamestop stock right now). If you read and enjoyed my [Gamer’s Primer for Financial Literacy], this might be amusing for you as well.

First, I’ll explain the game mechanics. There’s a mechanic in investing called Short Selling, where an investor hopes to make money off of a stock (e.g. Gamestop) that they believe will go down in value. That investor borrows shares of the stock from another investor and is legally bound to return those shares at some future date. The investor can then sell the shares today, wait for the stock price to drop, buy the shares back at a lower price, and return the shares to the lender while pocketing the difference. In our example, Desmal borrows five of my shares of AAGDCo and sells them today for $100 apiece, promising to return them (Desmal gains $500). In a week, AAGDCo has a scandal and the price drops to $80 a share. Desmal buys the five shares of AAGDCo back for $80 apiece (total cost: $400), returns them to me, and gets to keep the difference ($100 profit).

Under certain circumstances, the lender can enforce a margin call - a way for the lender (me) to (legally) force the borrower (Desmal) to pay back the shares she borrowed. This stops borrowers from borrowing forever if they’re in the hole (e.g. if AAGDCo actually went up in value after Desmal borrowed the shares and sold them). If there’s a margin call, Desmal must buy the stock shares and return them to me. If the AAGDCo price has gone up, Desmal must eat the difference in cost and possibly take a loss. Risk to reward here.

So what does this have to with Gamestop? Gamestop, as you may know, has been having a really rough time over the past several years. Their business is failing and doing quite badly. Physical retail stores are taking a beating thanks to Covid, and digital game distribution and sales have been exploding, leaving them behind. This meant a lot of investors thought that short selling Gamestop stock was a good idea - they think the stock price will continue to fall, so they borrow shares, sell them immediately, and then will pay those shares back at a later date when the stock price has fallen even more.

But… here’s the trick. So many investors shorted Gamestop stock that more than 100% of their stock had been short sold. These short sold investors are legally bound to buy back shares of Gamestop at whatever price once the margin call comes. This means that, if the stock price jumped up dramatically, margin calls would be made and these investors couldn’t avoid buying back the shares at the high price. So the trolls at /r/wallstreetbets decided to see if they could do it. They started buying up Gamestop stock.

At some point, when enough people buy something, the supply is gone and you can’t find it at the original price anymore (e.g. the PS5 and XSX consoles), so your only option is to raise the price you’re willing to pay in order to buy the thing you want. When enough people buy something, it naturally drives the price up. So… when /r/wallstreetbets collectively bought up all of the floating Gamestop stock, it drove the price up further and further. When this happened, the margin calls started coming in for the short sold investors, and they were forced to buy Gamestop stock at the much higher price in order to pay back the people they originally borrowed the shares from. This wave of forced buying triggered another wave of margin calls, which triggered another wave of forced buying, each round of forced buying driving the price up further. Gamestop stock being worth over $250 a share is the result of this.

Basically, too many investors had waaaay overextended themselves by short selling Gamestop stock and got burned for it. The same thing is starting to happen with other over-shorted stocks as well - Blackberry, AMC, and Express are all seeing similar things happen as well. A bunch of redditors with some money creatively used the game mechanics to grief a bunch of institutional investors who were way overextended.

The FANTa Project is being rebooted. [What is the FANTa project?]

Got a burning question you want answered?

though I still love Chronicles of Narnia the older I get and the more I learn the clearer it becomes to me why it would have driven Tolkien completely insane

The Santa part almost ruined their friendship

Tolkien: you can’t just patch random things together because you like them, everything has to fit together in a dense textural weave of reasonable causes and effects

Lewis: and then the witch from the other dimension turns the fox to stone for having a contraband tea party …

Tolkein is the nerd that complains that characters’ costumes and weapons are impractical and Lewis is the nerd that thinks the designs fuck

At Target this lady told her son he couldn’t have a Wonder Woman doll because “that’s for girls” and then bought her daughter the same one. It got me thinking about how often I see people bar young boys from appreciating girls/women as protagonists and heroes, and my own experience with it as a kid.

SPREAD IT AROUND

I made a reading guide for 2019-2020 X-Men comics because it’s like all I think about LOL. Pretty cursory all things considered but I wanted to keep it condensed to 4 images which is.. difficult to say the least. Anyways, hope this helps someone!

None of this is my art and I debated whether to put it on my art blog but my other reading order guides are on this blog so might as well keep it all together.

This reminds me of this guy who used to live on my dad’s street.

Every time it snowed, the snow plow would take out his mailbox - and only his mail box.  And just to be clear - it was done intentionally.  No one knows why, but the driver of the snow plow would target his box and mow it down.  He’d call the DOT to complain, and would get an earful of excuses that amounted to “not our fault you have a wimpy mailbox.”

Fast forward to the next winter.  First decent snow starts falling, and every kid is hoping for a snow day.  It was right around 4:30 am that the whole neighborhood was woken up to this loud CLANG and the screech of tearing metal.  My dad made it to the window first and started laughing his ass off.

Sitting out side was one very totaled, and almost ripped in half, snow plow.  And these weren’t little pick-up trucks with a blade on the front, we have these up in NY:

Well, turns out over the summer, my dad’s neighbor got himself a backhoe and sank a steel I beam into the ground in his front yard.  Then he covered it with a decorative wood sleeve and topped it with a brand new mailbox.  When the snowplow driver tried to mow it down it was a bad case of immovable object meets unstoppable force - and the mailbox won.  With the plow firmly impaled on the I beam, it was very clear that the driver had gone out of his way to hit it.

Naturally, the DOT wasn’t happy, and the neighbor’s reply was simple: “Not my faulty you have a wimpy snowplow.”  They did try to sue him for the damages, but as he had gone to the town, gotten approval for the post and its installation, and made sure everything was up to code, it was thrown out pretty quick.

And for anyone wondering about the driver…  He was fine.  His job and tighty-whiteys … not so much.

That is a very satisfying read.

toph and aang being bad parents makes sense

i hate the discourse that aang and toph wouldn’t be terrible parents. like obviously it’s shit that these beloved characters are so bad at parenting but it makes sense when you think about it properly.

aang’s father figure was a monk, a man who’s first job wasn’t raising aang, it was teaching him. aang grew up around peers who could bend and none of them had a biological family either - his childhood was far from ordinary. he didn’t know what a normal family looked like, with two parental figures in a loving and kind household. so yeah, he loved his kids, definitely, but it’s only logical that he struggled when it came to raising them. he had katara to help, of course, but also consider: when he had kids, he knew it was the only chance he could ever have to rebuild the air nomads. so obviously he paid more attention to his one singular airbending child. does it suck that he paid less attention to bumi and kya? yes it does. does it make sense? absolutely. aang loved his culture, and he made sure that he did everything he could to pass it on to his airbending child, so it wouldn’t get lost. even if he unintentionally lost his other children along the way.

toph grew up with overprotective parents who never let her do anything. she literally left them when she was 12. her family through her teenage years were her friends: she was never raised properly by parents in a loving and healthy manner. her default, when it comes to children, is to give them all the freedom they want, because it’s what she never had. so when lin and suyin beifong grow up resenting their mother for always leaving them alone, it’s because toph thinks it’s for the best. that her distance is what her children want, not her love and affection. toph’s childhood is what makes her a bad parent: she fears becoming her parents so much that she instead becomes the complete opposite, and alienates her daughters in a different way.

sucks that our favourite characters are shitty parents, but in terms of their character, it makes complete sense, and furthermore, it makes them flawed. they aren’t perfect, and i think that’s more beautiful than making them be absolutely healthy parents. the writers might have disappointed the audience, but they didn’t disappoint the story.

BWAHAHAAHA! some idiot tried to gatekeep Dan Slott of all people about Spider-Man. All because Slott noted that some older stuff had not aged well, and tried to make the argument that, you know, maybe Spider-Man, the hero, could refrain from body shaming for the sake of kids who may share those physical traits who are reading. Apparently the hero of a story acting like a good person in a way that would very minimally affect the story (there are plenty of other jokes/insults he could use) is unacceptable to these chuds.

also, in response to the guy Slott is responding to, I mean, if by saying some of those alternate jokes (make fun of their name, costume, etc.) have been done before  is brought p to imply jokes being used more than once should be avoided, then that still means shaming Kingpin or whoever for being fat has been done, and shouldn’t be used as a joke/insult again. This argument is not actually helping to make your point that Spidey should still make those jokes.

That’s why you should never accept the excuse “Well it was a different time.” They knew it was wrong. They always knew.

a baby can be born right now at 12:00, on a wednesday, august 24 in new jersey while another baby is also born in the exact same moment but they are born 9:00, on a tuesday, august 23 in california, these babies that are born at the same moment are technically because of time zones, a concept that we created ourselves, born “hours” apart even though really they are born at the same moment just not the same “time”, one will be considered older even though in actuality they are the same
