All things Ilaria

“In 1984, when Ruth Coker Burks was 25 and a young mother living in Arkansas, she would often visit a hospital to care for a friend with cancer.

During one visit, Ruth noticed the nurses would draw straws, afraid to go into one room, its door sealed by a big red bag. She asked why and the nurses told her the patient had AIDS.

On a repeat visit, and seeing the big red bag on the door, Ruth decided to disregard the warnings and sneaked into the room.

In the bed was a skeletal young man, who told Ruth he wanted to see his mother before he died. She left the room and told the nurses, who said, “Honey, his mother’s not coming. He’s been here six weeks. Nobody’s coming!”

Ruth called his mother anyway, who refused to come visit her son, who she described as a “sinner” and already dead to her, and that she wouldn’t even claim his body when he died.

“I went back in his room and when I walked in, he said, “Oh, momma. I knew you’d come”, and then he lifted his hand. And what was I going to do? So I took his hand. I said, “I’m here, honey. I’m here”, Ruth later recounted.

Ruth pulled a chair to his bedside, talked to him

and held his hand until he died 13 hours later.

After finally finding a funeral home that would his body, and paying for the cremation out of her own savings, Ruth buried his ashes on her family’s large plot.

After this first encounter, Ruth cared for other patients. She would take them to appointments, obtain medications, apply for assistance, and even kept supplies of AIDS medications on hand, as some pharmacies would not carry them.

Ruth’s work soon became well known in the city and she received financial assistance from gay bars, “They would twirl up a drag show on Saturday night and here’d come the money. That’s how we’d buy medicine, that’s how we’d pay rent. If it hadn’t been for the drag queens, I don’t know what we would have done”, Ruth said.

Over the next 30 years, Ruth cared for over 1,000 people and buried more than 40 on her family’s plot most of whom were gay men whose families would not claim their ashes.

For this, Ruth has been nicknamed the ‘Cemetery Angel’.”— by Ra-Ey Saley

She’s 60 now, she’s still doing activist and advocacy work, and working on a memoir.

my favorite thing about this story is that ruth had inherited a large family graveyard and never really knew wtf she was going to do w dozens and dozens of empty grave plots but then the AIDS crisis happened and she realized what she could do with it

When Burks was a girl, she said, her mother got in a final, epic row with Burks’ uncle. To make sure he and his branch of the family tree would never lie in the same dirt as the rest of them, Burks said, her mother quietly bought every available grave space in the cemetery: 262 plots. They visited the cemetery most Sundays after church when she was young, Burks said, and her mother would often sarcastically remark on her holdings, looking out over the cemetery and telling her daughter: “Someday, all of this is going to be yours.”

“I always wondered what I was going to do with a cemetery,” she said. “Who knew there’d come a time when people didn’t want to bury their children?”

Articles:

And a final quote from the first article:

She hasn’t been back to Files Cemetery since her stroke. While she made sure it was kept up back when she lived in Hot Springs, it appeared to have been let go a bit when the reporter visited in late December, some of the tombstones pushed over and broken, the snag of a dead oak left to rot among the graves. Even without knowing the story of the place, it might have been downright spooky if not for the constant stream of traffic cruising by at 10 miles an hour over the speed limit.
Before she’s gone, she said, she’d like to see a memorial erected in the cemetery. Something to tell people the story. A plaque. A stone. A listing of the names of the unremembered dead that lie there.
“Someday,” she said, “I’d love to get a monument that says: This is what happened. In 1984, it started. They just kept coming and coming. And they knew they would be remembered, loved and taken care of, and that someone would say a kind word over them when they died.”

just throw them away then! why is people hoarding stuff that no one wants better. it all has to go somewhere when you die anyway

Wow it’s almost like the problem is our entire commercial fast fashion industry and not Marie Kondo.

Okay so I looked up the article and apparently the problem here is that they  can’t sell most of the stuff they get (and thus they send it to the dump) and I’m like… why not just give it to poor people for free then. I doubt a homeless person is gonna care if their extra layer has a button or is in style or not. Or turn them into scrap to sell at a fabric store, or something. There are so many other solutions… this isn’t a problem with Marie Kondo and the people making donations, there’s one with charities being capitalistic first and wanting to help second.

please think about supporting this black trans woman, Jasmine. She needs funds to transition.

This is the fund for Clarabelle, a black trans woman in need of funds for living expenses and bills.

please consider offering some more support to Clarabelle who hasn’t received a donation in 18 days (6/1/21)

as of (8/30/2021) neither has received a donation in 8 days!

The complaint, filed Tuesday by the prominent civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, alleges that out of 106 people arrested by a Beverly Hills police “safe streets” taskforce, 105 were Black and one was a dark-skinned Latino person. Between March 2020 and July 2021, the unit unjustly stopped and arrested Black civilians who were roller skating, scootering, driving and jaywalking a few feet outside the crosswalk, the suit said.
The unit, also known as the Rodeo Drive taskforce, was set up last year in response to “a significant increase in calls for service in our business community”, according to the city, which is one of the richest municipalities in the US and less than 2% Black. [...]
The city has not disputed the arrest data included in the lawsuit and did not respond to questions about the figures. A spokesman said the task force was no longer in operation.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…

Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

Israel is demolishing Silwan as we speak. Over 1500 people, most of who are children will be homeless in a city ruled by people that don't allow them to rebuild anywhere. They're making almost 900 children refugees.

There are 40 bulldozers in Silwan and heavy presence of the IOF.

Keep in mind this proccess might be long, and they might start with shops instead of houses to wait until the media has moved on. That's 1 out of 17 homes ethnically cleansed.

The IOF is throwing tear gas at the residents so they leave their homes. 13 were injured. While all this happens, the IOF is posting about their delegation arriving to help with the searches in Miami. I have no words to say how hypocrital and how angry that makes me.

There are palestinians right now live blogging their ethnic cleasing, their city being run down and the residents driven out so there's no cultural trace of them, so they can pretend Palestinians never existed there. It's brutal to think these people survived one ethnic cleasing in 1948 and they thought they'd be safe in their new homes, only to be invaded and be ethnically cleansed again years later.

It's a choice to be ignorant right now because several Palestinians in Jerusalem are being brutalized and traumatized to show you this. The best we can do is clog the zionist propaganda so they can't pretend they're not destroying homes, as they always do. I don't want a single zionist to have peace on social media today, and that counts for everything on the BDS list (Ben and Jerry hasn't used social media in over a month because people were commenting about their settlements and the boycott was stronger than ever, that's the energy).

Ask for people to speak because zionists are too comfortable, look what they did to Indya Moore just yesterday. They want palestinians to be quiet victims with no one speaking for them

[Id: tweet by Mohammed El-Kurd reading "I want to see protests in every damn city in the world against the ethnic cleasing of Palestinians in Jerusalem / end id]

Here's a constantly updating list of protests around the world. Show your anger and don't look away, not now and not in one month but until Palestinians can return home in peace.

Straight Men just Be Like That sometimes

Some people in the notes keep defending Straight White Men while other notes just explain that it’s Facts:

Like… This post isn’t about forgetting a name/age because of memory loss, social anxiety or dyslexia. This post is specifically about how Straight Men aren’t involved enough in their kid’s education and well-being. It’s about the inequity of gender roles, and how men aren’t expected to care too much about their children.

We have a concept for this in French: “la charge mentale” (the mental load). It explains how women are expected to do all the chores and to remember everything which is relevant about the children’s development, while the men just… aren’t.

if you literally dont know how to spell ur kids name because of “women take care of the kids” or whatever then what the fuck are you doing my dude

and people wonder why dads get shafted on father’s day while mother’s day goes hard af

It annoys me so much that the Israel-Palestine conflict is painted as one of those divisive issues that there's no clear consensus on. 71.5% of the UN member states recognise Palestine as a country and therefore the rights of Palestinians to political freedom and self-determination. This map shows how countries voted in the 2012 UN resolution to upgrade Palestine's status to a "non-member observer state" and included the phrase "[to] stress the need for the withdrawal of Israel from the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem [...] and the complete cessation of all Israeli settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem."

It was a 138-9 vote (with 41 abstaining). The only countries who don't support a return to the 1967 borders are the US, Israel, and whoever they can bully into voting their way or abstaining.

Don't let the US and the rest of "the west" tell you that this is a divisive and debatable issue when it's pretty clear what side most of the world is on.

Israel has already destroyed Gaza’s water desalination plant.

According to the UN, Israel’s blockade has already rendered 97% of Gaza’s water unfit for human consumption for more than 2 million people living in an open-prison that they legally can’t leave.

they are literally trapped in a place that no human being can survive in, while being bombed and murdered. Do you understand what depth of despair you have to reach to be glad to die? Do you understand what it’s like to be Palestinian, undergoing a whole genocide in the year 2021, while the world watches on and does nothing? fuck Israel, fuck fascism
