another batshit theory for the ages...

though tbh it's just a summary that interweaves a variety of them. it's long and rambly im sorry

so @booksandmate added this increíble addition to what was honestly meant as a half-hearted shitpost, and then allowed me to pepe-silvia at them in their DMs, but it's been spinning in my head ever since - because if we consider if crowley had managed to reach ten before the lightning strike, and managed to control his temper... well, what would have happened?

Neil Gaiman and Rob Wilkins at the British Library event The Worlds of Terry Pratchett: Neil Gaiman and Rob Wilkins 21.11.2023

Neil about Good Omens Season 2: I kept describing it to people as gentle and romantic. And they're all like, how could you say that, you evil person? And I'm like, I thought it was gentle and romantic. I mean, for me, it was gentle and romantic. I can promise you Season 3 is not gentle or romantic.

Love the idea of the heaven-hell lift being a shared one like do the angels sometimes accidentally press the basement button are there embarrassing silences when both angels and demons wanna get in after a coffee run on the earth level how do they decide who gets to go first and what’s more likely to happen in the lift a murder or a shag

do you think it would have been different if crowley had counted to ten

counting to ten -> no lightning -> no nina and maggie locked in the cafe -> no nina and maggie getting to know each other -> no one to tell crowley he should say what he’s really thinking because sometimes that’s all it takes -> no planned confession??

i was thinking maybe counting to ten before lunging at aziraphale but holy shit this fucks too

honestly i think he did count to ten, there's quite a break with him all lost in his brain.

crowley counted to ten and then realised that the alternative is walking away without ever having kissed him, walking away without trying everything, walking away and possibly never seeing him again.

crowley reached ten and then did it anyway because he'd rather live with having kissed and lost him than losing him without ever kissing him—without ever allowing him to taste how much he really loves him.

ooh i like that way of looking at the silence-break between him walking away from aziraphale, and before the kiss - that he did think before (just to coin what he says in ep1) "doing something stupid", and the result was arguably - depending on how you view aziraphale's reaction of course - to drive aziraphale away.

i personally saw it more that when he walks away from aziraphale, he'd have carried on going out the door unless aziraphale called him back as he did, and that the half-turned away pose was crowley putting up the wall for whatever aziraphale had to say next - seemingly ignoring/blanking him, in self-preservation. that is, until the "i don't think you understand what im offering you", because crowley reads this (amongst other things) as aziraphale thinking him ignorant and naive.

and that it was when aziraphale turned away from him - in heartbreak, or shame, or anger, or all three - that crowley then snapped, didn't count to ten, and resorted to the last measure that he had left. i love the kiss for what it was and what it symbolised, but also what it broke too, and what means for the characters going their separate ways - so i just wonder, with the above thoughts in mind, what could have happened if crowley had counted to ten, "before [he] did anything stupid".

So, I was thinking about the 1941 theory, as I do most of my time these days. Specifically, about the idea that A Nightingale Sang will be playing at some point and they will dance.

My first thought was that the song might come over on the radio, since it was a hit at the time. But then I considered, maybe the gramophone would make more sense? It’s not as modern~ as a radio, and after all we know Aziraphale does OWN a gramophone, at least in the present day.

And then I was like, okay, so he has a music playing device, but where is it in 1941?? Does he even have it yet? So I decided to go back and check if we ever see it.

And we do! It’s there, in the same general position as it is in 2023 (just past the little office area, facing Aziraphale’s chair/the stove)

But what about after that?

Y’ALL

Not only is it VISIBLE in the candlelight dinner scene

LOOK at the gramophone in orientation to the stove

IT HAS BEEN MOVED! TO FACE THEM

IDK about Berkeley Square, but it sure looks like that nightingale is gonna sing in 1941

oh-

am i just extremely late to this epiphany party
