It is Disability Pride month and I think it’s time to bring this comic from April back
this comic reminds me of the sentiment that “everyone is gay now” but you know what else is on the rise? left handed-ness. and do you know WHY? because we have started to allow kids to write with whatever hand feels comfortable. we’re not taping people’s hands to desks or other horrible stuff.
it’s not that there are “more” people who are queer or autistic or whatever nowadays, it’s that people are actually being allowed to write with their “correct hand” (if you catch my drift)
also somwtimes when you dont understand a piece of art it's not bc ur dumb it's bc you havent had the very particular emotional experience that it's trying to invoke in you and you just cant relate. which is also why sometimes you will hear a mountain goats song and say Meh and then you go through some shit and you listen to it again and lose your fucking mind at how real and raw it is. art is how we communicate with each other about experiences that cannot be adequately represented straightforwardly with language. sometimes you have to abstract your representation of the experience in order to truly communicate how big and insane it felt

Sorry, I don’t care that Netflix shows are delayed, I’m catching up on anime from 1989.
in my time I've seen plenty of tv shows I enjoyed get cancelled and with most of them I have come to terms with that loss but there is only one show that makes me fall to my knees pounding my fists into the earth and screaming until my lungs are exhausted and that show is of course galavant
there's never been a better demonstration of "write what you know" than the idol because while you don't need first hand experience to write about a certain issue/community/experience, you should do your research and learn from real first hand experiences, and levinson clearly has no idea how the entertainment industry abuses and exploits young women.
victims do not use their abusers as "muses" and get "inspiration" from their physical/emotional/sexual abuse to further their own careers
the sad truth about the women who "sleep around to get jobs" in the entertainment industry is that they are being taken advantage of and are not in control at all. powerful men use and discard them. they do not succeed and they do not survive because they don't hold any power.
this twist isn't as thought provoking or as enlightening as levinson thinks. for anyone who has done their research or has first hand experience of being exploited by media execs/producers, they will see this message as uninformed and further supporting the myth that these women are actually sluts who like doing this and deserve to be tossed aside.
if you want a better insight into how predatory the entertainment industry can be to young women, go watch the assistant (2019) it is depressing and frightening in its accuracy and subtlety without succumbing to torture porn
(also the choice to cast the daughter of an abuser who silenced and humiliated his victim during a public trial is more than just on the nose!!)
being a girl and hitting puberty is so traumatic. you go from being a genderless little free thing to being hit with shaving and makeup and growing breasts and skincare and menstruation and suddenly being sexualised when like a few years ago you could take your shirt off to play in the stream and trade yugioh cards with the boys and come home covered in mud and not even think about it. and then you spend years hating being a girl and hating everything puberty did to you and wishing you could be a boy or be completely genderless again and it takes you Many years to come to terms with yourself Or you simply try to Lean In to everything and do makeup tutorials on YouTube and claim it’s for fun. like how can this be treated as normal
trans people AND cis women 🤝 struggling to exist in a marked body which the world wants to shape, control and project meaning on to against your will
