Pankaj Mishra, From the Ruins of Empire
Is there anything I can do to help Palestinians besides call my representatives and beg them to stop killing people?
This is a great question. There are a few things you can do—just off the top of my head:
- BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) https://bdsmovement.net/
- Direct Action https://www.palestineaction.org/
- Urge your University/School/Organization to put out a statement denouncing Israel
- Organize a Protest/Participate in a local one
- You might already be doing this but while calling your reps, tell them that as a voter, you're unwilling to support them in the upcoming election unless they urge the White House to take a stand against Israel and stop funding them
- Share art/writing/films around Palestinian culture
- If you're part of a union, ask them what they're doing to urge their industry leaders to take a stand against Israel + pressure the White House OR urge them to start a strike/walkout/etc if they're not doing anything already
- Talk with your friends IRL about Palestine, whether in an activist capacity or watching a movie or literally anything
- Reach out to a mosque to see if you can help them with anything
- See if your city/state council has put out a statement in support of Gazans. If not, try to push them to do so.
- Donate to Palestine Legal or Direct Action if you have some money to spare
- KEEP TALKING ON SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know some of these don't feel like they have as big of an impact on helping Palestinians, but we do need to make an effort not to forget their humanity in the face of continued erasure and the media's sensationalist rhetoric.
Talking on social media and posting—while not seeming like a lot—does SO much. I know in USAmerica, it's like yelling into a void, but political analysts are saying that most of the "Global South" has completely lost any amount of goodwill it may have had the past few years. Hopefully, countries will start to put sanctions and embargoes en masse on the US and Israel soon.
Our goals here are BOTH short-term and long-term. We hope for the life and liberation of the Palestinian people, so anything that you can think of might help at some point in the future is encouraged to at least try.
If anyone else has any more ideas, feel free to reblog and add on. Thank you for asking, and here is to a liberated Palestine where Palestinians can live and thrive without fear.
I hope every writer who sees this writes LOADS the next few months. Like freetime opens up, no writers block, the ability to focus, etc etc you’re able to write loads & make lots of progress <3

gaza has just been completely cut off from the world.
after increased intensity of israeli aistrikes tonight, the last cable providing communications was destroyed. telecommunications have been completely cut off. they cannot reach one another. they cannot reach paramedics. the red crescent society has completely lost contact with their branch in gaza. nobody inside can reach anyone inside, and especially not outside of gaza to tell us what is going on. this is a complete atrocity.
al jazeera has managed to maintain infrequent communication with their journalists in gaza. from their reporter wael dahdouh: “we are not fine. body parts are everywhere, missiles are targeting everyone, and the bombing hasn’t stopped for a second.”
do not stop talking about gaza. they are trying to commit genocide in the dark. do not stop talking.
don’t like it when people say you can’t have potatoes in ur fantasy novel without detailed explanation. who gives a fuck
“ohh in europe they didnt have those until” well its not europe is it. its middle earth its earthsea its some country somebody made up
“have detailed knowledge of your dragon’s anatomy and a foolproof scientifically backed explanation of how he can fly” he can fly because he’s a dragon. and because i love him

Imagine being a tuna (Atlantic bluefin, Thunnus thynnus). You are a super predator, over six feet long and almost a ton. You are as beautiful and shiny and mercilessly efficient as a sports car, a true marvel of the sea. But you taste so fucking good
I agree with you and also think this is some kind of philosophical point. Cruel efficiency will not save you when you have soft delicious insides
i have good news for the person who wrote that tag and bad news for sports car drivers

💘 Romance writers' work is worthwhile and meaningful.
💘 Smut and erotica writers' work is worthwhile and meaningful.
💘 Romance, smut and erotica writers are not lesser writers. Their work is not less meaningful or less valid than any other genre or form of artistic expression.
💘 Art is still art when the emotion it is intended to evoke is romance, longing, titillation, or arousal.
💘 Romance, smut, and erotica writing have merit and worth for their own sake, without having to have something 'deep' to say outside of themselves.
💘 Sex and romance are part of the spectrum of human experience and worth exploring in fiction and art for their own sake.
just so it shows up in the notes: this is an extremely good thing, which is why you will see the internet/cell companies revolt against it-- it will prevent them from selling your data to spamcall companies and selectively throttling their competitor's sites, among other things.
also remember that the internet has basically replaced phone service entirely now, with most phones now simply operating via VOIP. legislating the internet the same way as landlines were is really a no-brainer, it's the same service in a slightly different form.
What we need, long-term, is for Congress to make a law about it, so the definition doesn't change every few years when a new FCC is in place.
My first question to someone who’s like, “You should give up writing and learn to code!” would be to ask, “Is that how you entertained yourself during the pandemic? With long videos of people coding? Or did you read books and watch TV and movies like the rest of us?”
Okay honestly it didn't hit me how funny the concept of Weird Al's Even Worse album is until I found out they'd have gone on sale side by side.
"Hmmm, do I want Bad, or Even Worse?"
what if you went to your normal job and they were doing a musical episode
look i dislike the corporate artstyle book cover trend as much as the next person but we cant pretend every book looking the same is something new. if you stepped into a bookstore in 2013 there would be approximately 57 books whose cover art consisted of a girl in a ballgown with her back half-turned to the camera photoshopped into a vaguely fantasy-like landscape. i was 11 years old fighting for my life to find the right maximalistic girl and her single-adjective book title we cannot forget the horrors i went through please be respectful of my experiences
write for the audience you want, not the one you’re afraid of
write to delight the audience you want and piss off the one you’re afraid of
Write for the audience of yourself and trust that there’s other people out there who are just as weird as you are
Reblog and put in the tags if you’ve ever been in a wedding party before (like bridesmaids, etc.)
I hate to say this, and like, rain on everyone’s parade, but after scrolling past three posts about it on a writing tag …
If you are looking up synonyms to exchange words out in your story with the purpose of sounding smarter, more sophisticated, or complicated to your reader, you are probably abusing the thesaurus.
Now, if you *want* to do this, I mean, you can write whatever or however you want! But I just want you to know that this is frowned upon if you are trying to write at a professional level.
I have an old article on this somewhere …
If you want to look at the original article…
i am writing all the time except just like inside of me and not outside
