everyone needs to stop telling rich white women to stay safe by "trusting [their] gut" bc now theyre just attacking minorities

rich white women will see a man of color or a poor man or a disabled man or god forbid all 3 and go "i dont know guys im kind of getting bad vibes. like he seems dangerous i cant put my finger on why. he just acts off. my gut is telling me to call the police idk why"

There’s a branch of the Medicis that moved to Ireland and now are running a successful chain of fried chicken restaurants which is a very different vinbe from when they were like buying popes and stuff

The current heir to the main branch of the Hapsburg family is an endurance race car driver

If they don't call their WhatsApp group chat "WhatsHabs" what even is the point?

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

I keep wanting to make a post about Young-Earth Creationism but it is incredibly hard to summarize because it turns out that taking the Bible as a 100% literal description of scientific fact breaks things you wouldn't even think of.

It's the ideology that gets worse the longer you look. On the surface it's "lol evolution isn't real because god created everything" but when you investigate how this world of theirs actually works you get hit with "there is no consistent speed of light," "tigers and housecats are the same species and could interbreed," Noah's flood creating craters on the moon, wasps are literally, MORALLY evil, ongoing denial that any dinosaurs had feathers???, insistence that every carnivore can be vegan, plants not being alive, the whole incest thing,

Answers in Genesis (basically the only organization that still seriously advocates this stuff) also claims that all land animals alive today are descended from a single pair of animals that was on Noah's ark less than 5,000 years ago, and likewise that all humans are descended from Adam and Eve, around 6,000 years ago, and this works because genetic recombination when two individuals reproduce can create a large number of combinations.

I struggle to wrap my head around this, but the claim here is that if two individuals are heterozygous for a large enough number of alleles, their children will be genetically dissimilar enough to produce all of the vast range of qualities that exist in the human species.

This means that the human race and every other species of land animal was created by inbreeding/incest between siblings, less than 5,000 years ago.

Answers in Genesis also claims that, 5,000 years ago, animal genera and species had not yet diversified or become reproductively isolated, and that heterozygosity explains this.

This means that living animal families are the "kinds" spoken about in the Bible, meaning organisms that belong to the same family are the same "kind" and were not reproductively isolated 5,000 years ago.

They determined the original number of "kinds" created by God by the very scientific, rigorous method of "guessing based on vibes"

They've somehow looped back around to arguing that God created organisms with the propensity to evolve, even to the point of becoming reproductively isolated when they weren't before. But this isn't evolution. for some reason.

Because all the animals on the Ark were pre-programmed with enough variation to create the entire genomes of all animals living today. It's weird as hell.

They like to make a distinction between "micro" and "macro" evolution and claim that evidence for the first is not evidence for the 2nd.

Which is why they readily accept adaptation of animals to their environments - "micro" evolution - but reject that dinosaurs had feathers because that would make it too plausible that dinosaurs evolved into birds - "macro" evolution.

They'll say no one has observed changes "in kind" i.e. "macro" evolution. And when you say, "Yes we have fossils and DNA," this evidence gets questioned and rejected because, well, can't actually see the change happening with my eyes can I?

There's a fundamental anti-intellectualism at play, not to mention a lack of imagination.

A lot of it is just a sad lack of science communication with the public that explains things about evolution

I have read anti-evolution books and they don't address the genetics very much. The arguments are old, based on the supposed lack of "missing link" fossils (there's a reason for that—many entire periods of time are missing in the geologic record in various places because the rocks eroded or just didn't get formed during that time), poking holes in the early ideas and experiments that helped shape the idea of evolution, and supposed examples of structures "too complex" to have evolved.

Now if you straight-up told people, "Look, we can look at the genetic code of two organisms and see that they both have the same gene, and we can see a bunch of places where those genes mutated and changed in different ways, so we can reconstruct how they are related because we can see where modifications happened and compare it with other organisms that have one modification but not another" that would be new information to many of the people who are conned by this bullshit

But the high-school-level version of biology a lot of people learn doesn't give people the whole picture of how genetics works.

Anti evolution sources will give "calculations" on how often mutations happen, how often those mutations are beneficial, etc.

It's all bullshit because there is no consistent rate of mutation. Some organisms' genomes mutate much faster than others. Different parts of an organism's genome mutate faster than others.

And the cool thing is, a lot of an organism's genome is "junk" aka doesn't code for anything...why is it there? Hard to say, but importantly, that stuff can be mutated all you want and it won't hurt anything, and occasionally something cool will pop out.

So the genetic code is like a messy worktable with lots of stuff laying around, and it's constantly changing and being messed with, and the core functions of an organism are often only a small part of it.

So the major characterization of evolution is that it's "random" and "undirected" but it's...not random quite in that way?

What causes a mutation to happen? We talk about it like mutations are caused by The Force Of Randomness Itself. But there has to be physical processes that lead to a mutation in a gene.

A dice roll is random, yes, but imagine if you rolled millions and millions of dice, made from all different materials, of varying quality, and you gradually eliminated dice that rolled 1 more often—maybe you rolled each one 20 times and eliminated dice that rolled 1 more than 5 times, and then you repeated this elimination process. This would take years and years and years, but eventually, after many iterations, you would end up with a pool of dice that really are less likely to roll a 1 than other dice, because of flaws in their design causing one side to be weighted more heavily than the other, a chip in one corner, the way the numbers are etched into the face of the die removing minuscule amounts of mass.

Now imagine a cell copying its DNA—theoretically, mistakes will happen "randomly." But the whole process of the copying and transcribing and proofreading and repairing and so on is complicated and there's a lot of variation and change in it, and the propensity to mutate in certain ways or at certain times or in certain places can also be selected for by natural selection! It's really cool!

What able bodied authors think I, an amputee and a wheelchair user, would want in a scifi setting:

  • Tech that can regenerate my old meat legs.
  • Robot legs that work just like meat legs and are functionally just meat legs but robot
  • Literally anything that would mean I don't have to use a wheelchair.
  • If I do need to use a wheelchair, make it fly or able to "walk me" upstairs

What I actually want:

  • Prosthetic covers that can change colour because I'm too indecisive to pick one colour/pattern for the next 5+ years.
  • A leg that I can turn off (seriously, my above knee prosthetic has no off switch... just... why?)
  • A leg that won't have to get refitted every time I gain or loose weight.
  • A wheelchair that I can teleport to me and legs I can teleport away when I'm too tierd to keep walking. And vice versa.
  • In that same vein, legs I can teleport on instead of having to fiddle around with the sockets for half an hour.
  • Prosthetic feet that don't require me to wear shoes. F*ck shoes.
  • Actually accessible architecture, which means when I do want to use my wheelchair, it's not an issue.
  • Prosthetic legs with dragon-claw feet instead of boring human feet or just digigrade prosthetics that are just as functional as normal human-shaped ones.
  • A manual wheelchair with the option to lift my seat up like those scissor-lift things so I'm not eye-level with everyone's butt on public transport/so I can reach the top shelf by myself.
  • A prosthetic foot that lights up when it hits the ground like those children's shoes.

for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?

for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?

if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason

They are doing surveys that are really hard to find because their survey blog has reblogs disabled for some reason.

Log survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2V3MQTP

Short survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HS5LP3W

Blog: https://www.tumblr.com/benevolenthellsite

unfortunately the blog and the surveys are fake. more details in this post i just reblogged,

also I fucking hate those “if lgbt discussion isn’t allowed in schools than neither should pregnant teachers because she’s showing everyone that she got CUMMED INSIDE🤢 lol she’s teaching kids about her breeding kink” posts because 1) what an odd way to think and talk about pregnant people even if it’s just for a gotcha own. weird. anyways 2) are we just going to pretend that pregnant people don’t experience workplace discrimination? that reproductive rights aren’t politicians’ favorite bargaining chip? that pregnant people can’t face other forms of discrimination including medical abuse and social alienation? that murder isn’t a leading cause of death for pregnant people? that there wasn’t a time teachers had to sign contracts promising they wouldn’t get pregnant or could face termination? okay

Literally pregnant people are an oppressed class, I don't know how better to explain it to people. Pregnancy is disabling, and it doesn't help that there's people (on both sides of the political spectrum) don't treat it as such and refuse accomodations because "well you chose that". Pregnant people are less likely to be hired, even in workplaces that don't demand manual labour, because "oh well they won't work as much because of bathroom breaks and maternity leave". And there is a *huge* pressure for pregnant teachers to take the shortest possible maternity leave because "think of your students!!" And then once the baby is born and the parent returns to work, if the baby is fed breast milk they now have to negotiate breaks for pumping, and while in the US it's technically legally required to provide a space for that, it usually ends up being a corner in the public bathroom or a dark and musty supply closet.

And saying "oh well don't get pregnant then lol" is an impossible demand and also fascist. Telling people who face job insecurity to just not reproduce is fascist.

the first priority of houselessness advocacy should not be housing (although this is an important option for those who want it) but the right to free movement and the right to camp. every culture in every period of human history has had itinerant individuals, and in many places those individuals made up the bulk of human beings. in our society houselessness is incredibly difficult, but it doesnt have to be. as a houseless individual my biggest concern at all times was police harassment (being told to move along or having my shit tossed for being too conspicuous), and without that i would have been able to aquire a lot more agency and self subsistence with things like a semi-permanent camp, and growing and catching my own food (meaning: existence outside of wage slavery and property ownership. this is what scares them!). the fact is that privatization of property and vagrancy laws have been making the lives of houseless individuals infinitely more difficult over the past few hundred years. and until housing is wrestled from concepts of property ownership and rental fuedalism, "housing" the homeless is effectively a matter of bringing "free elements" out of the wild and into capitalist control. besides, there will always be people who slip through the cracks bureaucratic initiatives, and these people are left out in the cold because a man in an office did not dain to imagine them when he wrote his legislation. if you actually care about quality of life for the houseless and not just unsightliness, deprivatize unused property, create more robust welfare systems that dont require documentation to access, give people the right to roam and plant and gather, and who knows- maybe in ten years the tent cities will be places of color and joy and life lived in connection with nature. and because people dont have to struggle to find a place to lay their head, instead of desperation our streets will be full of artisans and musicians and laughing people.
