Still Finding Myself Welcome to the Journey

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?

Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.

Now, it’s just… Social media. That’s it. Social media and news sites. And I’m tired of social media and I’m tired of the news.

Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?

Long collection of resources under the cut.

ALSO you should consider browsing Virtual Pet List and seeing if there are any pet sites you might be interested in playing. There is a whole genre of browser games right under your nose

Another one that I just found recently is this, which is a whole collection of blogs, organized by topic!

Look guys the real internet IS STILL THERE I’m going to cry

Getting off of twitter and onto neocities has really healed me and I am so glad to see it is healing other people too ;u; let’s retreat into the self-made digital woods and away from corporate bs pls, I am so tired

The internet is still there, it’s just been cordoned off by The Internet™️ in hopes that we forget about it and keep feeding data to the Machine.

Strike pizza fund running low

This fund gets pizza straight to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA picket lines. Please donate if you can and boost this post!

[ID: tweet by Jess Morse @/chessmorse that says, "The fund is getting low again! We have enough to get to 8/3 (marking 3 months of pizza) but not beyond that. Please share if you can! This is my only platform, so screenshotting and sharing on other apps is appreciated! As long as you don't pretend to be me, it's all good."

The tweet is quoting her earlier tweet: "BUY THE #WGA A PIZZA I'm bringing pizzas to the picketers at Disney, WB, and Universal! Toss me some dough to keep our writers fed! http://venmo.com/u/Jess-Morse $10.97 = 1 pizza (tax included) #wgastrong #wgastrike #writersstrike." attached is her Venmo QR code. end ID]

This is such an important and genuinely terrifying post. I could completely go off on the rise of anti-science, but for now I’ll just add: it isn’t just boomers that get deceived. This is a warning to all of us.

Pay ATTENTION to what you are being told. If you think you cannot be deceived, you leave yourself open to deception. Question, doubt, research research research. Learn about your personal biases, dig up any subconscious cognitive dissonance. Keep an eye on your mind.

It needs to be stressed that biases, not a lack of intelligence, is very much the issue here. Being aware of the need to fact check yourself is key: Intelligence won’t protect you from bad or unhealthy mental states, or keep you safe from cults of any sort. Intelligence will just make it easier for you to rationalize and attempt to justify the malformed tools you’ve taken/been given to yourself and others. You need to be wise enough to challenge yourself.

As a cult survivor, this is lethally accurate.

as the media begins a public outpouring of grief at the passing of shuhada sadaqat, the artist known better as sinead o'connor, i’d ask us all remember three things:

first, sadaqat formally converted to islam and changed her name to shuhada sadaqat in 2018 (though continuing to perform under the name sinead o’connor).

second, sadaqat was a survivor of magdalene laundries, having been sent there for shoplifting and truancy at the age of 18. magdalene laundries were state-sanctioned, chruch-run “homes” for over 30,000 women who were “incarcerated for transgressing the narrow moral code of the time,” as well as girls with mental health issues, pregnancy outside of marriage, petty crime, and social dysfunction. conditions were abysmal: girls were treated with violence and aggression, corporal punishment was common, and it was almost impossible to leave without outside help. many women remained in these “laundries” for many years. investigations were presented to the united nations committee against torture after finding that these laundries and their exploitation amounted to human rights violations and torture. the discovery of a mass grave at one such location in 1993 became a national scandal.

third, when sadaqat protested child sex abuse in the catholic church during her snl performance in 1992, in which she tore a photograph of john paul ii and threw it at the camera with the words “fight the real enemy,” she was met with mockery and ridicule and almost entirely blackballed. this was before the catholic church had acknowledged or apologized for systemic child sex abuse and nearly a decade before the boston globe broke their investigation of allegations against paedophile priests. because she was a woman who had the audacity to speak the truth about a corrupt system. shuhada sadaquat was more than an artist.

edit as of 27 july: the original post has been edited to better reflect sadaqat’s name change (and i apologize for the unedited reblogged version).

Sixty-six staffers at Warner Bros. Animation and 22 at Cartoon Network filed a petition for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday and simultaneously requested voluntary recognition from management at the Warner Bros. Discovery subsidiaries. Collectively, the group includes workers in roles like production manager, digital production assistant, IT technician, production coordinator, production assistant, design production coordinator, assistant production manager and senior assistant production manager. The effort was announced on a joint Zoom call around noon on Wednesday with production workers at the Warner Bros. Discovery brands and TAG members. The staffers involved work on an array of shows, including Warner Bros. Animation’s Batman: The Caped CrusaderHarley Quinn and Teen Titans Go! and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time: Fionna and CakeWe Baby Bears and Craig of the Creek. “Although many might not think it, production is a specialized skill; we might not be artists or writers, but what we bring to the table goes beyond traditional creativity and gets content on the air,” Warner Bros. Animation production manager Hannah Ferenc said in a statement about the organization effort. “Having lived through the existing state of the animation industry for the past seven years, I want to make sure that not only our current workers, but all those who choose to join us in the future, can feel secure in following their passion by earning livable wages and being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

I stand with SAG-AFTRA and WGA. Feel free to share these graphics around to show your support for all the creatives fighting for better wages, career security, and the very future of their industry.

Do not boycott the streamers yet!

[Image ID: A tweet thread by WGA Strike Captain Kylie Sparks (@/KylieSparks) that says in full:

A reminder SAG has not called for a consumer boycott. Please keep watching tv and films-if anything, this helps PROVE the studios need us-AI doesn’t have the soul or emotion real people do.

Also this helps proves marginalized stories and actors are sorely needed in our industry.

I repeat, this erodes our bargaining power and this is something WE HAVE NOT ASKED FOR. WE HAVE NOT DEMANDED A CONSUMER BOYCOTT. Please enjoy your tv and movies! Get that to watch pile watched!

Okay I am closing this because folks are not listening.

SAG has not asked for a consumer boycott. You’ll know if this changes. /End ID]

I admit I messed up earlier because I was too trusting of people that I thought would have the right knowledge and think correctly about this. I was wrong. They weren't thinking of the consequences.

Please boost this and do NOT cancel you subscriptions!

I know it's gross to keep paying these fuckers, but we need to wait for SAG and WGA leadership's say so.

Although there were planes used against the miners in the Battle of Blair Mountain, it is not true that this was the first time planes were used to drop bombs on American soil against Americans.

The Battle of Blair Mountain took place in August and September of 1921. Just a few months prior to that, on May 31 and June 1, planes were also used to help destroy the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a prosperous black neighborhood nicknamed The Black Wall Street. At least 39 people died during the event, which is known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. Hundreds were wounded, and 6,000 black people lost their homes.

Both of these events were hugely important moments in American history.

Ask yourself why neither was taught to you in school. Also ask your local school board.

While every force available in the world is searching for the 5 people in the oceangate submersible, a boat filled with mostly Syrian and Pakistani refugees sank under still “unknown” circumstances off the coast of Peloponnisos, Greece (with the coast guard present). More than 600 people drowned but guess which of the two is making headlines

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH BLUE CHECKS

Elon Musk is paying blue checks for ad revenue in the replies of their Tweets now. He is only paying "verified" accounts for this, even if the account in question has hundreds of thousands of followers.

Do not reply, quote-tweet, or retweet any posts made by a user with a blue check.

Spread the word. Quit Twitter.

Housekeepers and Janitors Need Praise As Unsung but Very Much Important

Remember when the NRA told doctors to “stay in their lane” RE gun violence and #thisismylane trended as a result?

One of the tweets I saw was a surgeon who’d taken a picture of her OR, having just finished surgery on a young man who’d been shot. Blood. Everywhere.

This bloke retweeted her, mentioning that he worked as a cleaner in a hospital and had had to clean up stuff like this and worse.

Surgeon replied to him (and went up *greatly* in my estimation) and, despite living in different countries, thanked him for his hard work.

I can’t find the tweets sadly, but hers went something like;

“Without a clean and sterile operating room to work in, my team, our skills and the best medicines in the world are next to useless. You are doing invaluable work, without which my work would be impossible.”

WITHOUT PEOPLE DOING THE CLEANING, SOCIETY WOULD GRIND TO A HALT WITHIN DAYS

Every garbage workers’ strike shows it.

Give them the respect they damn well deserve.

I was actually just reading about this in Caste: The Origins of our Discontent. The author talks about how one’s body goes into stress or anxiety or defense mode when the person knows they’re being followed, watched, or otherwise scrutinized. She brought race into it. A Nigerian man, who was just a person in his country, was healthy as anything. He got to the U.S. and within a year, his doctor told him he was suddenly pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure. He never had those things in his country. He learned that being Black in the U.S. is a very different experience than being Black in a Black-centric country. The author elaborated more about those in poverty, women, and being a minority in general. Having that “fight or flight” triggered in the body, sometimes for hours or days or weeks at a time, degrades the body’s natural defenses, making them more vulnerable to disease.

[image ID: a tweet by @/jfitzgeraldMD that reads: In med school, I took an elective called “Stress”, foolishly thinking I was going to learn about meditation and yoga. Instead the professor spent 6 weeks proving that being poor or a minority literally destroys your health on a molecular level, and I think about that every day. /end ID]

happy pride month from your neighborhood gray!! I forget that asexuality has been severely misrepresented and that a lot of people don’t actually know what it is as a result so here is an overview of what asexuality is, what it’s not, and how acephobic is represented. there is so much more to asexuality than just this. I didn’t even mention the medicalization of asexuality!

I highly rec scretspiderlady on Twitter because she writes a lot about the ace experience and has many comprehensive threads. I also rec Yasmin Benoit, a Black aroace lingerie model who is fighting misinformation about asexuality and shedding light on racism within the asexual community. if you’re interested in more resources feel free to dm me!

EDIT: I updated the slide that refers to asexuality as “aspec” to “acespec.” The term aspec refers to the a community as a whole – both asexuals and aromantics – while acespec refers to the asexual spectrum and arospec referes to the aromantic spectrum. You can see this mirrored in the terms acephobia (experienced by aces), arophobia (experienced by aros), and aphobia (experienced by both aces and aros). Thank you to those of you who tagged this post with their correction!

EDIT 2: now with a text-only option!
