Sherlock Holmes having a universal ace experience -- expressing disinterest and immediately getting called an inhuman robot.

Watson is like "of course I proposed marriage to a girl I met two days ago, I'm normal and make rational decisions"

Every Sherlock Holmes remake that tries to make Watson the straight man does him a great injustice. Mfer is a total madlad. Everyone's like "oh he's not addicted to hard drugs and doesn't do chemistry experiments in his bedroom for fun" there are subtler ways to be completely unhinged.

The thing is, Watson may or may not instigate the Situations & Shenanigans, but he voluntarily spends most of his Sherlock Holmes, who DOES!

““Normal”“ people do not do that.

Watson will show up at Holmes' place and be like "are you doing any investigations of super weird shit today" and Holmes will be like "yes I am cornering this dangerous mass murderer, you should come and bring your gun in case anyone tries to shoot us" and Watson will do it without question, thinking "I'm so glad he's got something wholesome to distract himself with so he doesn't take more cocaine".

I just played a video game called Vale: Shadow of the Crown.  It has a blind protagonist and is 100% navigated by audio.  You need headphones to play it.  I was intrigued by the premise, but worried that it would be a gimmick that wouldn’t actually hold up well.

Turns out it worked just fine and I found myself really sucked in!  I even turned off all the lights and played much of the game with my eyes closed.  Though there were a few difficult sections (for me, using the bow was hard), it was mostly pretty intuitive.  Honestly, the biggest problem was getting sleepy after a while, because as far as my body is concerned, if I spend that much time with my eyes closed, it’s bed time.

Anyway, it was a neat story with good voice acting and I actually really enjoyed the combat sections.  I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a novel gaming experience, as well as to anyone who has impaired vision.

Agreed!

To give more of a plot synopsis and potentially draw more people in, the story is about a blind princess named Alex who is sent to a remote corner of the kingdom when her father dies and her brother assumes the throne.  Her convoy is attacked and it appears that war has suddenly come to her kingdom.  She decides to go back to the capital to warn her brother, and enlists the aid of a shepherd to help guide her on the long journey.  Though she grew up fairly sheltered, her uncle trained her in weaponry and self defense and these abilities flourish over the course of this adventure (she also learns some magic as well!).

It takes a little less than 7 hours to play through the story, and I mostly did it in one sitting because I got hooked.  And if the Falling Squirrel development team comes out with any other audio based games, I’d definitely be inclined to give them a try.

buckle up, I have ThoughtsTM about textiles in Hyrule

In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, color is a choice the player can make with access to the Hateno dye shop. Similar to real-world history, it isn't all that expensive to dye clothing, and a player can choose from a variety of colors. I can't say how colorfast Hateno-style dyeing is, because it's a video game and we never see Link get covered in so much as mud, but I'm willing to guess that those colors don't fade all that quickly, unlike in the Middle Ages when dyes were cheap but mordants (what make dyes colorfast) were expensive.

The main exception to dyes in Hyrule being inexpensive appears to be brighter blues (also true in the real world) with a royal champion's favors being dyed in a vibrant shade of blue (look at Link's scarf in Hyrule Warriors in addition to the champions of Breath of the Wild.)

In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom specifically we also see a lot of patterned fabric, which appears to be a selection of both embroidery and patterned weaving. Given that the embroidery is on everyone's clothes, it seems likely that everyone does it on their own clothing as a hobby rather than it being expensive or a show of wealth, and it's the same with the woven patterns. I think that the weaving style is specifically backstrap weaving:

Anyway I found these details fascinating, thanks for reading!

Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don't mistake you for a bot

This is one of the first posts I've seen after trying to look at Tumblr again, so I've decided to head their advice and reblog this. I don't even know what a reblog is but I'll find out in time. It's a learning process

a reblog is what you just did! it's similar to a retweet on twitter and it's the main way things spread on tumblr

Anyone else hate that you can't simply click on the username of the previous poster to get the post to reblog without the stupid comment?

Presenting: all of my “Rauru, Mineru and the Zonai are dragon people not goat/bunny people” evidence, neatly compiled into one image!

Though the goat comparisons also work in favour of this evidence because of the following quote from concept artist Satomi Usui in the Creating A Champion book about designing the dragons from BotW:

“[…] I played around with a number of ideas that would be recognizable as a dragon but also different from what you would expect. So I made the face and body mammalian, like a dog or a goat, and their arms contain elements of both birds and human hands.”

Rauru also has horns! True, they're small horns, but yeah

Hey this gave me ideas

What if, for the Zonai, draconification is just the natural next step in their life cycle--it's triggering it early that's considered forbidden?

Naydra, Farosh and Dinraal either created the Zonai or predate them but are of the same kind. I can't explain why there aren't more dragons in botw/totk in this case (unless the others are just very reclusive), or why the Zonai are extinct in modern Hyrule and dragons appear to be nearly extinct.

pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it's like, "oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism" and that was very very brave of them

ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.

AO3 has written about what they’re doing (and what they’re not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]

This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why I’ve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.

@lordoftherazzles made a quick guide for ao3 authors to lock all their works at once for registered users only here!

Someone recently messaged me worried I’d deleted all my fic - it’s all still there, it’s just locked to A03 because of this and other skimming instances.

Please note that many fanfic authors are locking their stories so that they are only accessible to registered Ao3 users.

They’re still there at Ao3. The authors have made this choice to protect their work from misuse/AI scanning.

another reminder y’all. Ao3 Authors are locking their stories to protect against misuse/AI scanning.

Yep! That’s what happened with mine soooo locked to users we go! Including my anon works. Especially the anon works.

I’m undecided whether I want to lock my fics or not. I’d rather keep them available for anyone to read but with this going on…

these jackasses really love to ruin things for everyone else don’t they

Hey. Actually. What if we all wrote one variation on My Immortal and left that unlocked. Poison the data sets. Ruin the AI’s ability to spell.

I am in support of this action, but my god it would take a lot of effort.

Does it all have to be HP fic, or does everyone draw a fandom out of a hat so as not to give the Queen TERF more attention?

I say just write the worst thing possible for the fandom you like best. We need to figure out a code tag so people know which fics are trolling the AI but the people running the AI can't tell
