Ominous!

@theomenroom / theomenroom.tumblr.com

Call me Carolyn. Mid-30s. Writer. Near Seattle. Lesbian. Mostly reblogs

going to cut down on my tumblr usage because I'm going to make this coding bootcamp my idle animation at the computer as much as I have the energy to. I'll still get messages and stuff but I won't see as much of my dash (especially not promptly)

I don't understand why all these characters are surnamed Kong. It appears to reflect some kind of-- like not ALL the apes are named Kong, so it has to mean something, no??

Sometimes it pisses me off how much funnier you are than me. I'm laughing but my thumb is hovering over the report button

obviously everything happening in the us is horrific but (like everything in trump's traveling carnival of government) it's mostly exceptional in now slapdash and clownish the cruelty is. let us please not forget that the EU has been paying foreign governments to torture and murder asylum seekers for years -- and australia's been doing the 'sending refugees to unaccountable offshore camps' thing for more than two decades. & like i say this not to detract from the justified fury and outrage for the situation in the usa but to urge everyone to analyse it not as some bizarre abberation but as something that fits alongside a long list of policies long pursued by the usa and other imperial core nations

““The mannerisms that help define gender - the way in which people walk, swing their hips, gesture with their hands, move their mouths and eyes when they talk, take up space - are all based upon how non disabled people move…The construct of gender depends not only upon the male body and female body, but also on the non disabled body.””

— Eli Clare, Exile and Pride: Disability, Queerness, and Liberation

“I no longer have a gender. Rather, I have a wheelchair.”

—Christina Crosby, A Body, Undone.

No, tumblr user, I don’t think the hatred of trans women is cemented on the hatred of men. I believe, god forbid, it might be based on the hatred of women.

Finding out that Lancelot was apparently the invention of a french writer is absolutely hysterical to me. 12th century french poet sitting around reading arthurian romances and thinking "yeah these stories are pretty good but I think what they really need is a french guy who shows up and fucks arthurs wife"

if you think of yourself as a trans ally, the first thing you have to accept is that trans is just an adjective, like skinny, black, disabled, or brunette. trans men are properly men and belong in that category just as much as men with any other modifier before their name. trans women are properly women and belong in that category just as much as women with any other modifier before their name. trans women aren't women because it's polite to accept them for who they say they are, they are actually women and are treated as an underclass of women in society, like women from any other marginalized group. trans men are treated as a marginalized class of men, while still gaining advantages from being men in a patriarchal society. that's what we mean when we say that trans women are women and trans men are men. it's not just a call to be polite and accept people on the surface, it's a statement of reality and how people function in society

My wish that more people could start hrt younger especially goes for friends in countries who can't start hrt at all. you absolutely deserve and deserved access to trans healthcare

So much love to people in countries where HRT isn't an option and never has been. Where it's fully just illegal and always was. You deserve and deserved access to trans healthcare. You are absolutely worth so much better. 💕💕💕💕

(And I'm sorry it's so hard to talk about this without people making it about the US and UK, because I guess no one else in the world exists.)

"Israel has continued its attacks across Gaza, including a strike near a school in Jabalia an-Nazla, killing at least five people.

Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has called on the government to begin annexing parts of Gaza if Hamas refuses to disarm, a proposal far beyond Israel’s planned Gaza City offensive, which the UN has condemned."

Lots of headlines about the UN 'slamming' Israel but not an end to material support for the genocide

Nader needs help, please, my dear followers, if you are able to provide a small verse to help Nader, that would be very good and wonderful. Please donate if you can.

Please guys donate to us we all depend on you to survive please please please don't ignore this post and please donate to us

Please donate to Nader any amount, anything that helps him eat and drink. Your donation makes a big difference and saves lives in Gaza, so please donate.

Nader and his family are suffering greatly in the Gaza Strip now and they are in dire need of our support and assistance. Please donate if you are able and if you are unable to share this post with your friends. Every donation helps Nader's family a lot.

Any amount to Nader and his family is lifesaving; if you've been feeling helpless lately, tossing a couple bucks towards a Palestinian family is a good way of helping that feeling. You're helping a real family in need survive these conditions!

Unfortunately, my friends, with more than 240 people participating, only two people have donated so far. Please don’t leave us alone. You can help us a lot. Please donate to us.

It saddens me to see that 450 people have shared this post and only 3 people will donate. Have we become just numbers to you? We really need help. Please donate. Please.

Please help Nader if you can!!! He deserves all the help in the world

More than 850 people have participated and I hope to reach 3 people. Please, my dear friend, please donate to us and do not ignore us or our suffering. Please help us and donate.

reject the western gaze!

mutual aid means no hierarchy between givers and receivers

a new mutual aid org, Bridge of Solidarity, has been established in the gaza strip by 17 year old poet yazan mohammed in response to the exploitative practices conducted by some charities and encouraged by the existing charity-based model of fundraising for gaza. according to BoS: "the western attention economy and pity economy plays a large role in who lives or dies in gaza." essentially, people need to make themselves marketable in order to receive lifesaving aid; people who are not marketable die. yazan himself wrote about the damage this can do to one's self image, which you can read here.

we cannot keep forcing people to do this anymore.

here's a declaration of their values from bridge of solidarity's most recent post:

Our organization is against the Western gaze. We refuse to humiliate people. We refuse to force people to take photos. We refuse to force people to take photos with our flyer or logo. People will receive aid freely without being forced to pose. We will respect people's privacy completely. Our principles include autonomy, dignity, sovereignty, mutual respect, and mutual aid.

this org will prioritize giving aid to people without phones or social media, who do not speak english, and who do not have outside support or living parents. these are the people who are not palatable to westerners but who deserve to live with as much dignity as everyone else

as of five days ago, BoS are working on a water truck delivery

People are so much more sad, and desparate, and lonely than you think. I have had three incidents in the last four months were a technician I was working with was being either dangerously unfocused (we work with high voltage), or just flat out angry with their coworkers, and every time when I just pulled them aside to say hey, this isn't you, you're nice, and you're competent, so something must be up - what can I do to help - they have responded by bursting into tears. One guy was struggling to get his wife moved into a care home, one guy just got served divorce papers, and the other hadn't slept a wink the night before because his daughter had the pukes.

I haven't spent my whole life responding to people being rude, or stupid, or dangerous with knee jerk compassion. It's a new habit. The first time I did that as the lead for my lab, it was because the guy genuinely was so good natured that I knew something had to be off. But the other two times were just me going, alright, lets see if it always goes this well, and so far, it has. I'm almost 30, and I just figured out that the #1 reason people are shitty are because they are going through shit.

I don't think you have, like, a moral obligation to respond to people being jerks with knee jerk compassion. But it has made my life so much easier the last four months that I would recommend trying. For your own sake. Please.

(I'll step off my soapbox now. Enjoy your Sunday.)
