@thenerdygirl91

I don’t mean to be rude; but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, does anyone have any examples?

  • Supernatural
  • Doctor Who (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Sherlock (Steven Moffat specifically)
  • Actually Steven Moffat is basically just this sentiment given human form.
  • A version of this happened with The Magicians, tbh. Though instead of expectation: men, reality: women it was expectation: smug nihilists, reality: mentally ill queer folks.
  • Arguably Game of Thrones.

If we broaden it outside of television...I think Star Wars falls into this, at least the sequel trilogy. Maybe the MCU as well. And I can't help but think of every band that's ever complained that their fanbase is mostly women. 5 Seconds of Summer comes immediately to mind.

In general, most white male creators seem to have this massively entitled mindset where they want--and think they deserve--the time, attention, and enthusiasm that creative fandom (i.e. the side of fandom more dominated by women) is known for.

They want our eyes for ratings, our word-of-mouth for free publicity, our metas for social media buzz, and our spending power for merch and cons. But they don't want us. And they don't really want the responsibility of telling a story to a thoughtful, engaged audience, regardless of that audience's demographic makeup. They just want to be praised for whatever schlock they cough up.

And like any other spoiled brat, they will break their toys before they share them.

It goes all the way to the top for kids shows. Toy sales will crash a show. Makes sense, but if those toys are gendered for boys instead of the female viewers, they won't usually switch up the marketing and move them to the girl aisle. They cancel the show outright.

Mind you it is perfectly possible to make the switch in marketing, but execs would rather throw it all out than have something that doesn't perform well with male viewers. For example the Rey merch was not expected to be popular, for some reason, there had to be public outcry to get merch of one of the main 3 protagonists. A PROTAGONIST. The fact that she wasn't a huge part of the 1st launch says a lot already.

And what happened when female fans got too invested in the Sequel Trilogy? The entire writers room didn't necessarily lash out, but they sure forgot how to behave.

#WhereIsRey (initial)

#WhereIsRey (ongoing)

You're all sitting on the hot take of the decade tbh

And yet when they fond out that boys were watching MLP:FIM in droves, they had NO PROBLEM with it.

The 100 too. I'll never forget how Jason Rothenberg would attacked female fans on Twitter and mock them in interviews, and then post links to male fan discussions on Reddit to praise and thank them. In his goodbye letter to the show he SPECIFICALLY thanked Reddit and it was so disgusting.

Star Trek from TNG on was also a boy’s club, even though the TOS fans were mostly women. Women, in fact, who literally created modern fandom with their zines. But after TNG it was all, “Women don’t understand Star Trek, only smart men hur dur.”

More links, PLEASE reblog or repost and add more resources: OHCHR - Iran: Women and girls treated as second class citizens, reforms urgently needed, says UN expert Iran: Where the regime opposes women’s rights Read: The Wind In My Hair - My Fight For Freedom in Modern Iran by Masih Alinejad

Watch: Kiosk - Sweet Destiny (the movie) I don’t think I’ve ever asked my followers to reblog anything but this time it would mean. The actual world. To the people of Iran. If you could spread awareness of the Iranian people’s fight for freedom right now. I’m not on Twitter or Instagram (although this post is optimized for instagram so PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REPOST IT ON IG) but from what I could see there is not as much noise about this as it should be. Nor is it easy to find posts with resources and basic information. And on tumblr I’ve only seen some posts from dedicated feminist blogs or actual Iranians. And from what I’ve gathered they NEED US to share what’s going on. They are shutting down internet in Iran so it’s up to us to not let the world look past this, not this time. PLEASE join the fight for women’s rights!!!

It’s Switchel Time

[ID: portion of a 19th century whaling journal reading: ‘See that the cook has victuals prepared for the men in the boats, against the return of the boats, and if we get any whale, mix a whole bucket full of switchell for the men to drink. If we get no whale, they get no switchell. If as how you can do all this, Ben, we’ll have you for ship keeper’.]

My favorite old-timey vinegar drink of sailors & laborers that sometimes people recoil at when I share the ingredients, but ultimately end up enjoying because it is…THE TASTIEST if the ratios are balanced. You need ginger, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, lemon, and water.

[ID: photo of a bottle of maple syrup, a bottle of vinegar, and the mixture of them in a jar]

Here are my ratios:

1. Peel and slice fresh ginger. This is to taste, but I use 1/3rd of a cup. 2. Bring the ginger & 2 cups of water to a boil, remove from heat, and let cool 10-15 mins. 3. Mix ½ cup good apple cider vinegar and ½ cup maple syrup in a jar. I like dark maple syrup, but it’s whatever you want! 4. Add the ginger & boiled water to the vinegar-maple syrup mix. 5. Add the juice of half a lemon.

[ID: Photo of the finished switchel in a jar with ginger slices]

All done. Put it in the fridge.  I like mixing 1 part switchel to 1 part seltzer when I drink it, and get about 3 servings out of this that way.

reading that post about strange 1950s food got me thinking about Victorian cuisine

(1) Hello everyone. I'm from Ukraine. Please help spread the information about African and Nigerian students in Ukraine. #AfricansinUkraine

I read from @ nzekiev on twitter that the day before yesterday it was very hard for Africans to get on any train in Kyiv, they were letting them in the last, many managed to get in only coz they started pushing African women into the train so they had to allow everyone in. Before that if they managed to get on the train they were sent back outside with the phrase "Ukrainians first", but nobody was checking anyone's passports.

Today, February 27, he says the Ukrainian soldiers at the Polish border were holding them at gunpoint if they crossed the border before Ukrainians. These are students, they can't be fighting this war!!! Other people of color share on twitter that it's harder for them to cross the border, a Nigerian medical student told @ stephheharty they were told Ukrainians go first and were sent to the back of the queue by Ukrainian soldiers on Polish border.

@ Damilare_arah shared a video where Ukrainian soldiers block Africans from getting on trains. (https://twitter.com/Damilare_arah/status/1497654141350522880?t=rkNx-B9TffKopCRtfgZodA&s=19)

I can't figure out how to download videos from Twitter so I'm attaching screenshots. (https://twitter.com/Damilare_arah/status/1497855205098106880?t=gi_dUgx8nFI36KqlH-CeEA&s=19) (https://twitter.com/nzekiev/status/1497805019311218689?t=hz-3gS0hFxwAZQddLZI85w&s=19)

We must help. They can't be denied shelter while every other white Ukrainian gets to cross the border right before their eyes. @ chylady and @ Damilare_arah share all the important information for Africans and Nigerians on where to find help and also donations.

@ korrinesky is actively sharing all the information. This thread increases to this day and time:

They also have a Telegram chat for African and Caribbean students who are in Lviv but I can't seem to be able to copy the link directly so I'm sending the link to the tweet:

Use the hashtag #AfricansinUkraine and mentions @UN @RedCross @UNESCO @wateraid @amnesty @gatesfoundation @FordFoundation @ActionAid @Oxfam on twitter.

Ways to support Ukraine 🇺🇦

More than 500,000 people have already left Ukraine due to the invasion by the Russian Federation. The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management estimates that roughly 18 million Ukrainians will be affected by the conflict in humanitarian terms, with 7 million internally displaced and 4 million seeking refuge elsewhere. To help those still in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian refugees, we’ve compiled this list of resources.

How to spot signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer

Reblog to literally save a life

whish they told us this in school, all they did was say “feel for lumps, you will know when you feel it”

This is important, even if it doesn’t work with your blog theme REBLOG IT!!!!

Women need to know this, not all of us have ever been told what we need to look out for!

yeah reblogging especially for my transmasc fellows who (like me) might be real uncomfortable with their chests and not know what to watch out for because we try to avoid this kind of thing (just me? okay)

I read all the health pamphlets as a child.

“Look for lumps,” they said, “watch out for unusual lumps and discharge.”

They did NOT say, “By the way, some areolas have little bumps on them. And some get pimple-ish things around the edges. Or on the nipples. These are not the lumps we are talking about, and that is not the discharge we are talking about.”

I spent years worrying about whether I had breast cancer. (I got exams, every year or two, and those were always fine and I stopped worrying. Mostly. But then a new tiny bump would show up on the edges and I would wonder IS THIS IT? …but not ask to see a doctor because 14-year-old girls worry about everything, all the time, and six months ago the doctor poked at my breasts and didn’t say anything alarming, so this is… probably fine? Like last time?)

I had a slightly more present and caring doctor tell me what I need to be looking for specifically are lumps that feel like peas or grains of rice.

That distinction cleared so much up for me, like, breast tissue is all lumps and bumps normally (which is what mamories feel like to me). What the hell do they mean by lumps????

Now I know.

The myth of Achilles, but instead of holding him by the heel, Thetis sumberges him fully so that Achilles is completely invulnerable and Thetis has one invulnerable hand.

She only needs one oven mitt when taking cookies out of the oven.

But there would still be two small parts of him that are vulnerable because they were covered by her fingertips at the time, stopping the water from touching them. Which means those fingertips are also vulnerable on her hand

Achilles *putting those little round band-aids on two parts of his ankle before battle*

Thetis *knitting fingertip oven mitts for her thumb and forefinger*

This is a Greek comedy I could get behind

What if she put him in a sack and dunked him in? The water would saturate the sack and soak him and so long as she pulled him out quick, he wouldn't drown. Then they'd have a sack that's invulnerable too and can be used as the most unexpected shield ever.

Imagine Achilles storming Troy with one (1) invulnerable sack for a shield

and swirls him around like a batch of chicken nuggets until he’s invulnerable all over.

When I was a child my body yearned for Spring and summer. For blue skies and the hot sun, for green grass and daisy. I hated September as it ment the end of that glorious warmth and herald the short days and bitter cold. As I get older I find the opposite to be true now. I find the heat weary and the long days exhausting. September is now welcomed. I long for crisp air, the cold rain, and the long nights. Perhaps as I move into the autumn of my life it is easier to feel a certain kinship to it. I don't regret it. I embrace it. I have played in my spring and I lived every moment of the the summer of my life. But now my body is older. Now it is time for fall.
