Yes it’s very important for solidarity with workers but, and maybe this is an unpopular opinion, workers should have solidarity with poor customers. Like ignore shoplifting, be sensitive when ppl are using EBT cards, that kinda thing.

If you work retail and you worry about shoplifters I beg you to remember how little money you’re being paid to do this

As of 12/8/21, Kellogg's has broken off negotiations with their striking union workers and is electing to permanently replace the strikers. So needless to say, don't support strike breaking: don't buy Kellogg's products. Besides breakfast cereals, Kellogg's makes Cheez-Its, Pringles, and owns Kashi. I'm sure there's more that I'm not aware of, so if the hive mind wants to add to the list, please do.

TL;DR Don't buy Kellogg's products

Y’all have GOT to start actually reading what the strikers WANT you to do.

Kellogg’s is so big that “don’t buy their products” is virtually impossible, not to mention not possible for many individuals and families who can’t afford anything else. Not to mention that it is not a strategy the union is asking you to use.

That’s right- the union and the strikers are NOT asking for a boycott.

(If demand for products keeps going at its usual rate, but there is no one creating a supply, that creates building pressure on the Company to actually be forced to listen to the union in order to be able to meet the demand.)

According to the link above, here are the union’s ACTUAL requests:

  1. Sign their petition.
  2. Join a picket line or drop off food/supplies at one.
  3. Send a solidarity letter.
  4. Donate to a Strike Fund.
  5. Help spread the word on social media.

Notice how “don’t buy Kellogg’s products” is NOWHERE on this list.

The link above does include things like a link to the petition, lists of picket lines in need of support, address lists to send support letters, and links to Strike Funds that need help.

The boilerplate “don’t buy their stuff” doesn’t help anyone, and doesn’t help the union or the strikers. In fact, it’s sometimes the opposite- if enough people go around claiming that the strikers want a boycott, the company can use that at the negotiating table to say that the strikers are in “bad faith”, and refuse to talk, or worse, try to use it to fire them.

Whenever there is a strike, find out what that PARTICULAR union wants as help. Now, it might actually be a boycott. But the union & the strikers will tell you that. I know this goes against popular preconceived notions about “what a strike is” and “how a strike works”, but in most cases, it will NOT be a boycott.

And in this case of the Kellogg’s strike, it is definitely not.

Keep buying the products. It’s putting pressure on Kellogg’s that a solution needs to be found.

Donate to Strike Funds, write letters of support, drop off food at picket lines. Make posts on social media about how reprehensible you think it is that the company would rather hire scabs than listen to their employees and treat them with dignity.

The best way to support any strike is to listen to what the strikers want you to do, and then do that.

Obligatory plug for the IWW union, “Industrial Workers of the World”, iww.org

You do not have to be an industrial worker to join it, or even employed at all. If you have a union to join, go for it! Or check out this one too. Unions are a great power- if they weren’t, companies and corporations wouldn’t be fighting against them tooth and nail.

#UnionStrong #SolidarityForever

When they were negotiating, they didn't want a boycott, now they are explicitly asking for one.

If you can avoid it, don't buy Kellogg's brands. Support unions.

Does this apply globally?

Kellogg's is available in 180 countries (at least some of them), according to their website, it doesn't seem like they're called different things outside of North America from what I can tell. But it's a little unclear, tbh.

In Brazil, they own the Parati group-- apparently a food conglomerate.

They're also half stake holders in a Singaporean company('s food subsidiary) Multipro, and has stake in Tolaram Africa.

They also own Kashi, Rx Bar, and Pringles, which I think are more well known internationally?

So there are a lot of tactical reasons to boycott even if the union doesn't ask for that (they're often legally forbidden from asking for that, for example) you just shouldn't say they asked for it if it isn't true.

THAT BEING SAID there are also good selfish reasons to boycott scab labor, especially in any product that could present a health or safety hazard. Scab labor is full of mistakes and lowered standards, a company whose workers are striking will put out dangerous, contaminated products simply because everyone who knew how to make the product safely is gone and no one who's training the scabs knows what they're talking about.

Case in point:

Like, sure, don't buy scab-made products for solidarity reasons. But also? Don't buy scab-made products because you don't like eating fucking woodchips and string

Something that kind of....frustrates me when it comes to the conversation of prison abolition, and similar subjects, is the fact that so many of you require perfect and complete answers to extremely complex questions before you’re willing to get on board, so much so that you would rather stand behind a system you know is immoral, inhumane, and failing rather than stand in imperfect opposition to it.

I think the phrase is “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.” As in being able to implement a single solution is better than not create any solutions because it’s not a solution to everything. You’re not ignoring other problems when you address one. It’s OK to just take a single step.

me hanging out with black people in the summer: “aye, yall don’t forget to put on sunscreen”

them:

Use the Walgreens Brand which is pretty cheap and it does wonders and doesn’t leave me with a white cast. And I’m dark as hell so I hate looking ashy but not all sunscreens are made equally and it’s one of the better ones I’ve used.

Wait cocoa/shea butter and coconut oil don’t protect you from the sun we really do need sunscreen??

Yea fam. All that “we don’t need sunscreen” shit is a myth. Combine that with the fact that most dermatologists don’t know how to spot skin cancer in Black people and it’s a nasty combination.

Yeah, it’s harder for us to get it but when we do it’s deadly. I know two people who died of skin cancer, both were Black.

“While incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.”

Sorry about the link, I’m on mobile. But this is from August 2016, which I know isn’t the most recent but it’s still SUPER IMPORTANT. Y’all please wear sunscreen. With Google it’s even easy to find smaller, Black-owned brands.

I use this sunscreen from Walmart. It’s cheap, doesn’t leave a white cast, and smells pretty good.

Duuuude my family uses that and it’s Soo nice it even smells good

Same for brown people, are skin may be dark but we do burn!

Korean and Japanese sunscreens are also a great option for deeper skin tones! Their formulas are way more sophisticated that most US sunscreens, don’t feel greasy, and most don’t leave a white cast. Biore Aqua watery essence and Purito Centella green level sunscreen are especially nice and not crazy expensive

this. Is everything.

Im going to buy that Hawaiian Tropic to see if I can alleviate acne scars since I think the lack of proper sunscreen is what makes them worse.

if you get dark or red marks after break outs, protecting that skin from UV exposure helps reduce that pigmentation flare up white casts comes from the ingredients of “mineral” sunscreens using titantium dioxide or zinc oxide. “Chemical” SPFs won’t leave the white cast, but they may give a weird purple cast on darker skin. It’s down to the formulation. The best SPF is one you not only use, but like using enough. It’s not moisturizer, babes, you need to use a lot more than a smear. Also replace your bottles a year after opening. Their efficacy degrades with time.

And not a lot of people let you play that, and Emily, our showrunner, like embraced that. And was like, you can be vulnerable, and still be kick-ass. (x)

why the fuck aren’t there decorative dispensers for maxi pads.

they could look like those fancy tissue box covers but function like a tea bag dispenser

I don’t use tampons but a dispenser for those could be like the ones for straws

I have to do everything myself I guess

I still have to sand and finish it but I’m pretty happy with how it came out

I added a finish! I didn’t stain it or paint it because I like how it matches my room.

Also some of yall are telling me to patent this, but why would I do that when I can just as easily post a diagram for free on the internet so anyone could make one if they wanted to :)

Looks great, and like it wouldn’t take much tweaking to hold cloth pads either!
