1. Kirk discusses the difference between computers and men and tells Spock he’d make a splendid computer, to which Spock looks and sounds flattered. Jim smiles affectionately until Uhura calls about a call from a Mr. Benson.
2. From Amok Time, Spock explains how the plak tow abated, and then Uhura calls about a message from Starfleet Command.
3. Spock tells Jim that he has no wish to serve under a computer, and that starships run on loyalty to one man, who is irreplaceable. Jim looks stunned and incredibly touched until Uhura interrupts with a transmission from a Commodore Westley.
4. The “this simple feeling” scene from The Motion Picture. Spock discusses how V'Ger is searching for answers it will not find as a result of not feeling emotion while he and Jim tightly hold hands. Uhura calls in about a faint signal from Starfleet, and Jim reluctantly lets go to respond.
5. In The Final Frontier, Spock discusses how Sybok believed emotion and passion were superior to logic, which got him banished, to which Jim replies, “Fascinating.” Uhura calls the captain to the bridge, and Jim gives Spock one last look before leaving and saying, “On my way.” Spock remains in the room while Jim and Bones walk away until Jim calls for him.
+1. In “The Undiscovered Country,” Uhura tells Jim they have orders from Command to be put back to space dock immediately and that they are being decommissioned. Jim, Chekov, and Scotty all look deeply sad. Spock watches them, then says pensively, “If I were human, I believe my response would be…” He raises his eyebrows. “‘Go to hell.’” The signature Star Trek swell of triumphant music comes in as Jim turns to look at him, and Spock repeats, “If I were human,” making Jim smile slightly. End VD]

I never noticed the first time I read The Wounded Sky but I ordered a copy of Doctor's Orders and they accidentally sent me another Wounded Sky, and while flipping through it I realised for the first time that your bibliography at the back included papers by McCoy and Spock! I already loved this book for so many many reasons but now I've discovered another fun secret.
... That biblio was one of the most fun things to write in that whole project. ...No reason everybody else shouldn't see it:
...Partly the bibliography came as a reaction to finally being free from the months and months of research into hyperspatial physics I did before serious writing on that book began. I was lucky enough at that point to be living in a tiny apartment at the corner of Reseda and Prairie in the San Fernando Valley, directly across from the Cal State Northridge campus. During that period I practically lived in the college's science library, increasingly snowed under by papers many of which I could just barely understand. (Remember, you're dealing here with someone who hit calculus and bounced. And is still embarrassed by that.) ...So when I finished writing the novel, this last little splash of citation-speak spilled out: something between a joke and a formal farewell to a job I'd loved, but which was a lot of heavy lifting and hard work.
It also had one delightful bit of completely unexpected fallout. The paper by J. Richard Gott III (hey, he's got a Wikipedia page!) was possibly the most useful of the many, many articles and books I dug through in preparation for writing the book... that being why I wanted to include it in the biblio. I was kind of stunned, therefore, when the paper's extremely distinguished author got in touch with me some months after publication to thank me for citing him (!!) and to ask if it was all right if he used The Wounded Sky as a teaching asset for his astrophysical sciences courses at Princeton. (!!!!) Of course I said yes. And then wandered around for a few days in utter astonishment.
...Anyway: glad you had fun with it!
*Because the world of scientific papers isn't without its jokes. Still thinking fondly of one paper I came across entitled "Taub-NUT Space as an Answer to Practically Everything."

@dduane I didn't take Gott's class when I was at Princeton (I'm actually not sure if he was emeritus yet by then), but he was the keynote speaker at an alumni event I was also speaking at in 2018, and he was fantastic. Most notably, he explained his cosmic string theory of time travel using a cake, and at a precise moment in his explanation, he gestured to the kitchen door...and a string of staff came through with a slice for everyone. It was the most delicious lecture I've ever attended; the prof certainly knows his showmanship.
Now that I know he also used your work in his classes, I wish I could go back and enroll!

“Our Lady of New Frontiers, Nichelle Nichols”
My last painting of 2022, and I wanted it to be a painting carrying me into the new year, a tribute to an amazing and inspirational woman.
Star Trek has been a show I have watched since I was a wee one. I started with TNG as a child, but when I finally watched TOS in college, its impact was undeniable, both today and especially during the time it aired.
Although the famous speech says “final frontier”, Nichelle Nichols was a woman leading the way onto new frontiers, a beacon of hope, resilience and possibility. So that is what I wish to carry with me into the new year.

Consider. A human wakes up in a strange medical bay, with an alien doctor standing over them. Turns out their shuttle crashed, and the alien ship only just managed to teleport the, on board in time.
By some miracle, the doctor explains, they escaped with only minor injuries. Some burns, a few scratches and “several small wounds. We’re not sure what caused them.”
“Wounds?”
“Small holes in your ear lobes. Possibly they were old wounds and unrelated to the accident, but either way, our doctors were able to heal them for you. There’s not even any scarring.”
The human pauses. Thinks for a minute. “Wait… you unpierced my ears?!”
“I… Suppose we did? Is that a problem?”
“Er, not exactly. It can be redone. though it’s not gonna be fun. But my people do that to ourselves on purpose. It’s self-ornamental… I don’t know the word. We decorate ourselves with small stones and bits of shaped metal or plastic.”
“Oh!! I’m sorry, that’s a fairly rare behavior among sapients. Why, if I may ask?”
“uh. It… Looks cool? I guess?”
“…My experience with humans is limited, but I gather that’s the reason for many of your behaviors.”
