Happy 11th bday!
i think any conversation regarding banning tiktok that insists tiktok is actually a force for good misses the point
it doesn't matter if tiktok is the next library of alexandria or if it sucks shit, the problem is that the US government shouldn't have the authority to limit americans' access to the internet so dramatically. the problem is other social media corporations lobbying to ban their opponents. the problem is pretending data harvesting is just fine as long as we're the ones doing it, diverting attention away from how companies like facebook have already harvest and sold way more data than tiktok could ever dream of collecting for the chinese government.
Frederick Lea Hardy died fighting for Canada at Vimy Ridge in the First World War. Shortly before being killed in action, the teenager spent time in prison doing hard labour as a military punishment for his sexuality.
Hardy was one of at least 19 members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force involved in consensual relationships who were arrested and tried for what was then known as gross indecency.
The painful, often bleak, stories of these men were uncovered by Sarah Worthman while doing research at Veterans Affairs Canada. Her findings have just been published under the auspices of the LGBT Purge Fund, a non-profit organization established through a class-action settlement.
The settlement with Ottawa was a key element of a sweeping federal apology delivered in November 2017 for decades of discrimination against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. [...]

Voters in Toronto’s upcoming mayoral byelection should not support anyone who wants to cut police budgets, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday in the wake of an apparently unprovoked fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old at a city subway station.
Ford has previously said he is staying out of the race to replace former mayor John Tory, but addressed it Tuesday when asked about violence in Toronto’s transit system.
He said there needs to be a three-pronged approach to address the issue: mental health supports, more police, and federal bail reform. On the first two points, Ford did not indicate that any additional funding would be coming from the province to either help Toronto hire more officers or boost his government’s 10-year, $3.8-billion mental health strategy.
Ford did, however, have advice for voters in Toronto’s mayoral byelection in June. [...]

Doug Ford is still salty Toronto didn't vote for him for mayor and is doing his best to interfere out of spite. Absolute loser.
Across downtown Vancouver, there are more than 160 single-room occupancy [SRO] buildings that contain small single rooms, usually with a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities.
The rental units serve as part of the city's affordable housing stock, typically offering a cheaper option than market rental apartments.
SRO housing is often seen "as the last stop before homelessness," according to the City of Vancouver's website.
But without any control measures in place, the price of rent at certain privately-owned SROs continues to climb, sometimes reaching more than $1,000 a month, which advocates say is creating financial barriers for the city's most vulnerable population. [...]

And keep in mind the max amount of disability one can get is $1358 and these places often add fees on top of rent for utilities and/or don't cover them whatsoever. But let's pretend this is a generous living situation that covers that.
So you have $358/month left over for:
- Your cell phone: $40 on the cheaper end because data plans are some of the highest in the world.
- Your food: $50/week if you're into couponing and don't get bored with the same thing over and over again.
- Your meds: Anything from nothing to hundreds.
- Medical aids: Again, nothing to hundreds.
- Luxuries: No, you don't even get these.
You also get no privacy or space as this is a single room, and depending on your medical needs, you may have to go for a larger one as some of these one-room places are barely big enough for a double-sized bed and dinky computer desk.
And that's if you can get the maximum level of assistance. It can be as low as $935, which won't even cover rent.
And the wait list for public housing where you'd get more space is 10+ years and, as we learned during the 2021 heat dome (or was it 2022's?) you don't get control of your apartment's temperature so the landlord may decide to save a bit of money and disable your air conditioning even if there's a chance you'll die (which did happen to some).
"Affordable" has lost all sense of meaning in BC, for many things, but especially for housing.
Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet tabled a bill on Tuesday, aimed at limiting the presence of children in the workforce.
“In order to be eligible to work, you will have to be at least 14 years old,” Boulet said during a press conference in Quebec City.
Unlike other provinces, Quebec has no minimum working age.
The proposed legislation is based on a flagship recommendation by the Comité consultatif du travail et de la main-d’oeuvre (CCTM) — a committee made up of leading employer’s associations, union leaders and the Labour Ministry. [...]

This a case of read the article. Quebec currently has no minimum age so this is actually a good thing. Its placing a restriction on the amount of hours worked (17) and how much between Monday to Friday (10 hours total). The article doesn't list what industry this applies to only that it's for kids between 14 to 16. 11 to 13 are restricted to things like babysitting and newspaper routes. It doesn't have anything for teens over 16 but they are looking into one for it. It's bad it's taken so long for Quebec to do this but this is an over all step forward. They even mention kids aren't the way to solve the labour shortage.
Hi, so this might be random but I haven't seen anything about it on here and I know this is a website full of depressed people who probably use dry shampoo.
DRY SHAMPOO RECALL
"Among 148 batches from 34 different brands of dry shampoo products, 70% of samples tested showed "quantifiable" levels of benzene."
These products and more are being recalled for containing cancer causing chemicals. And because of the nature of dry shampoo is to spray it in your bathroom, directly onto your head, it can linger in the air and expose you to the chemicals for longer periods of time.
"The detection of high levels of benzene in dry shampoos should be cause for significant concern since these products are likely used indoors, where benzene may linger and be inhaled for prolonged periods of time."
THIS IS A LINK to one article full of information, but you should probably do your own research on the subject to figure out if you currently have or have used one of these products and what to do about it moving forward.
I forgot to date this but this is from early November 2022. The article is from the 3rd. And PLEASE remember that the included photos were lifted directly from the article and I don't think they actually include every recalled product. If you use or have used dry shampoo then make sure you do your own research! This post was simply to put the word out there.
ID. photos of rows of several different brands of dry shampoo. End ID.
unrepentant tiktokers who haven't thought critically since 2019 will hear a criticism of tiktok and be like "how are you gonna hate a whole app 😂😂💯🤡" I do hate tiktok. yes all of it. I don't care about whether the content is good or bad, I hate the fundamental function of that app which is to get you addicted to the zero-effort dopamine hit you get from consuming shortform content algorithmically tailored to you, erode your attention span, and promote consumerism. this is true regardless of whether or not you "found your community" on tiktok or use it as an escape or a coping mechanism. this does not add nuance to the discussion the way you think it does. i do not care and i am not obligated to care and I hope that app one day gets class action lawsuited into oblivion
Twitter 'Discourse'
I have made twitter a new logo you're welcome twitter
Love that Beloved Mutual katisconfused and I predicted elmo skun's self gratification driven implosion of the bird site
Love that for us. Feel like this guy could use a few dozen Very Important checkmarks tho.....
it is done.
fyi deviantart announced they're doing ai generation using uploaded creations on the site
All creations are automatically opted in to be used in the program, so if you want to opt out you have to do it manually one by one :/ :/ not even mentioning what this means with creators who have passed away with their creations on the site...
overall a real scum move. I only have a few old pieces up there so im just going to be deleting my stuff from the site. I feel so bad for artists with hundreds of art pieces on there having their stuff stolen like this...
HEADS UP!!!!!
I just deactivated my account after over 17 years due to this shit :( not taking any chances here.
Not sure if anyone’s added this info yet but
But also like....lmao
A couple of reblogs seem to say that deleting/deactivating doesn't even opt you out somehow but idk how true that is
but like... what the fuck is this form even?!?

Kanye West & Candace Owens both need to go eat shit and … well, you know the rest of the saying. I’m not tryna get my b-log deleted.

you can seriously tell a motherfucker we should have more buses, more disability accessible buses, more bikes and disability accessible bike-like vehicles, more bike lanes, more pedestrian-friendly streets, and more trains and they'll say "no." like dude your car is not freedom. freedom is options. you don't have to do an oil change on a bicycle. you don't have to worry about oil changes on well funded and well managed bus networks. cars fucking suck. but you tell a motherfucker that and they'll say "but fReEdOm" freedom from what? oxygen? plastic-free environments?
Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.
I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.
Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.
Idk Maybe cherish some things for longer. Reblog stuff. Interact with people. Comment and share.
Fandom is Capitalism now and I’m not being nuanced.
people also seem obsessed with only Doing Fandom about currently active works?
“oh, I’m so sad that show ended! I really miss the fandom!” who said you have to leave, coward
Fun fact: You are part of keeping a fandom alive. Every interaction, every person in a fandom has their own part to play. If that’s reblogging art, fanfics or making cursed edits, that’s good enough.
If you want evidence, look at how long the Star Wars and Star Trek fandoms kept on enjoying those series after they “ended.”
It was because the fandom stayed alive that there were dozens, maybe hundreds, of novels and comics and games that came out in the nearly 30 years between Star Trek TOS and TNG. It was because people kept writing fics, making art, and organizing conventions.
Or look at fuckin Tolkien! Return of the King was published in 1955. The fandom of that series has a continuous existence since before we had a word to describe it.
Hey, we can go older. Why do you think we still have Shakespeare? Robin Hood? King Arthur? Why do we still know Greek myths?
If you find a story that resonates with your heart, don’t give it up. The fact that no one’s trying to sell it to you doesn’t diminish its worth. In fact, I’d argue that a story that you stop caring about once it’s not for sale is the cheapest kind of story there is.
Global animal populations are declining, and we’ve got limited time to try to fix it.
That’s the upshot of a new report from the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of London, which analyzed years of data on thousands of wildlife populations across the world and found a downward trend in the Earth’s biodiversity.
According to the Living Planet Index, a metric that’s been in existence for five decades, animal populations across the world shrunk by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018.
Not all animal populations dwindled, and some parts of the world saw more drastic changes than others. But experts say the steep loss of biodiversity is a stark and worrying sign of what’s to come for the natural world.
“The message is clear and the lights are flashing red,” said WWF International Director General Marco Lambertini.
