UK voted for Brexit, the £ has reached almost record lows, and global stock markets are tumbling. When has nationalism, racism, and economic instability ever caused anything bad in Europe?

It should be a requirement that you need to visit a concentration camp to see the reality of where nationalistic fascism gets you. Because that’s what happen. People fucking die.

Go stand in the middle of a place like this. No tour guide bleating in your ear, no tourists squawking about selfies. Fuck the tour groups. Catch a bus and go yourself. Go stand in the middle of one of these places, and theres LOTS of them, they’re ALL FUCKING OVER EUROPE. The Budapest synagogue in the old Jewish ghetto. The synagogue in old Prague. The Birkenau extermination camp in Poland. Dachau, a brutal labor camp in Germany. Transnistria’s death camps where Rroma and Jews were tortured before they died months later from their injuries. Terezin in Czech. The Sajmiste extermination camp in Serbia. There are millions of graves. Millions of non graves as most weren’t even granted that.

Fucking walk into any of these places, take your headphones out, close your eyes and breathe the fucking air. Think about this shit. And I mean really think about it, where you end up crouched over a mass grave memorial covered in pebbles, ugly crying with snot streaming down your face and your heart is cramping.

Millions upon millions of people died in these places because people stood by and didn’t tell fascists to fuck off. 12,000,000. Maybe more than 15,000,000, all told. Keep in mind the victorious side wrote the chapter in this history book so the deaths will always be minimised. Because the losing side was mass murdered as part of fascist genocide.

Jewish people, Rroma minorities, people with mental and physical disabilities, LGBTQIA+ people, children, any other religious minorities, political activists, prisoners of war, communists, Slavic people, soviet citizens and sometimes, just “because”. They’re you. If you weren’t born here and now, they would have been YOU. It would definitely have been me. It would be us dying. And you know what?

If you stand by and let them run the show, this is what will happen. People will die. People are dying.

as much as its fun to laugh at these brexit memes i don’t want anyone to forget how serious this actually is. i have one of my housemates crying in my room bc her career relied on the uk being a part of the eu (she wanted to go into foreign diplomacy). my mum is freaking out because the uk basically just put xenophobia and racism ahead of its own interests and she doesn’t know what that means for her immigrant self, or her british born foreign children. my brother-in-law who works for a french company is terrified that his job won’t be there tomorrow. i’m living in the netherlands rn and the pound has plummeted so much that the money i budgeted at the start of this month is no longer enough for me to make rent and eat. this is just the beginning and this is only how brexit is effecting one singular person (me). i can’t even imagine the wider damage this is gonna cause.

and as I’m already seeing the “oh my god England why would you do this” posts from non-Brits, please know these things before you start being judgey:

our government is, in all honesty, a shambles

give tumblr’s demographics, chances are your British followers reading your posts are not the ones who voted leave, and we are watching our economy and future prospects crash around us

please don’t be arseholes about it and mock the decisions that we did not make

Ok can we get one thing straight?

Yes, America, this is a good example of why you should all turn out to vote against Trump.

BUT, kindly stop saying that Britain ‘gave into racism’. The vote was near fucking 50/50 and it was mainly the old, stupid, ill informed or yeah, just plain racist that voted to leave. But the other fucking half of us didnt and we arent just gonna lay back and watch it happen. 

Use this as an example but dont fucking insult the millions of people of tried to get it bloody sorted.

I can’t believe I witnessed England destroy it’s own economy 

i know everyone is panicking rn and i am too but i’d just like to emphasize that the referendum is not actually legally binding in any way. the government is not legally required to act on the result. it’s basically just a very fancy opinion poll.

while the pressure to respect the vote of the people and the democratic process will be intense, the results were so incredibly polarizing (especially since scotland and northern ireland unequivocally voted remain and the leave result is literally solely england’s fault), and the consequences would be so devastating that there is a definitive chance the government could elect not to invoke article 50 of the lisbon treaty anyway.

they are very likely not gonna ignore it outright but they might take the issue to a parliamentary vote instead, which ironically could be argued for as the kind of parliamentary sovereignty leave voters complained brussel is taking away from the uk. if this should happen, MPs are majority pro EU and would very likely vote to remain.

considering the the pound has had its worst drop since 1985 and is still freefalling and the international stock markets were already reporting fatal crashes while a leave win was just projected, not even sure, the horrific economic effects leaving the eu would have should become clear quickly and might sober up quite a few people who didn’t (or didn’t want to) realize how catastrophic the result would be.

The only independence day I want is the one where the aliens come to kill us :)))
