She/they. 22. A bi pagan theatre nerd who is big into TMA and The Mechanisms. Camp counselor, cosplayer, and ready to kick your ass. From St. Louis, MO, currently going to school in Michigan. TERFs, homophobes, transphobes, racists, Nazis, and porn blogs DO NOT INTERACT

Rewriting this post bc Tumblr apparently didn’t like it and decided to delete it. Thanks, Tumblr!

Hey you. Yeah, you. Are you a massive fuckin’ nerd? Do you love Destiny and Dungeons and Dragons? Do you wanna play as your guardian in D&D? I've worked out a build for that! DISCLAIMER: This won't work for every campaign and every setting, and you should talk to your DM about it beforehand to make sure it’s compatible with the game you’re in. Once you’ve done that, you can start building your character! You're going to be at least level three in this character, because you're going to be multiclassing. Your base class, the class that you're going to want for your first level, is cleric. I chose this for the "religious" aspect of having been granted your powers by the Traveler as well as for the fact that clerics are known for healing, and in the game we do get the mechanic that allows us to revive others. You'll want to be a light domain cleric. Your second level is where you choose your in-game class. Are you a hunter? Put a level into rogue. Are you a warlock? Sorcerer. Titan? Fighter. For your third level, you're going to want to pick ranger, specifically the horizon walker subclass. The horizon walker subclass won't kick in until you've got three levels in Ranger, but you'll want to have the basis for it anyway. For your race, you can obviously be a human, or if you want to be an exo, you could choose warforged. For an Awoken character, I think an Elf would work pretty well!

For your background, you can honestly choose whatever you want. I picked folk hero because I feel like that fit with the status that guardians have, but if you want to get skills and proficiencies that your guardian might have had in their first life, feel free to choose another background that gives you the skills you want! You could probably even talk to your DM and have them pick a background for you but not tell you what it is, to kind of play into the "not remembering your past life” aspect of Destiny. So now you have your base character, but you're going to want gear. Again, talk to your DM about what works with their campaign, but once you have your guidelines, go nuts! I tend to use hand cannons, bows, and swords most often in game, so I gave my guardian character a pepperbox pistol, a shortbow, a shortsword, but I also gave her a glaive bc glaives are awesome. Now for spells! As a cleric, you will already have light, burning hands, and faerie fire. In addition to these, I chose guidance, sacred flame, and spare the dying as my cantrips, plus cure wounds, guiding bolt, and healing word as my first level spells "But Jedi, how do ghosts work?" you ask, and folks, I hear you. I hear your questions constantly. They come to me in my dreams like a prophet receiving visions from an angry god. Again, I will disclaim that you should check with your DM before implementing this, but here's how I'm thinking about handling the ghosts. Remember how I said I had chosen healing word and cure wounds as my first level spells? Well, flavor wise, those wouldn't be cast by my character, they would be cast by my ghost. They still would use a spell slot, but in describing them, they’d come from your ghost. If you reach zero hit points and you fail your death saves, that would mean that your ghost was destroyed and you're permadead. Time to roll a new character. It’s not perfect, but I spent a lot of time thinking about this, so let me know what you think and let me know if you use this to play your guardian in a D&D campaign!

There is NOTHING "ethical" or "moral" about a medical practitioner letting someone die because they don't approve of the LGBTQ+ community.

Even doctors who work on battlefields know it is the ethically and morally correct thing to do to care for enemy soldiers who are wounded.

The Florida legislature appears to be enacting laws that are about as hateful and corrupt as Southern legislatures enacted during Jim Crow.

They are turning Florida into a dystopian society.

We cannot let DeSantis anywhere near the Oval Office or he will turn the entire nation into a far right dystopian nightmare.

The Republican “culture wars” focus on every hateful thing except whatever could actually help people

From the article [emphasis mine]:

The newly signed law says denial of care can’t be based on a patient’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin, but it provides no protections on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Additionally, the law also allows healthcare employers to discriminate in hiring and bars medical boards from disciplining doctors for spreading misinformation, essentially forcing employers to keep workers who refuse to do their jobs, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) noted.
In a statement, the HRC said the newly signed law “creates a license to discriminate by allowing healthcare employers to discriminate in hiring, and it bars medical Boards from disciplining doctors for spreading misinformation.”

You would have to be willfully ignorant and aggressively naive to believe that Republicans won’t change any of the qualifiers at some future date. Clarence Thomas already implied that he thinks Marriage Equality should be overturned. If they’re coming for the “T” and the “Q” in LGBTQ today, you better believe they’ll be coming for the “LGB” tomorrow. And they won’t stop there.

Which is why I always find it wild when all the TERFs out there side with conservatives (knowingly or otherwise), foolishly thinking that they’re safe.

If you aren’t a wealthy, white, heterosexual, “Christian” male, then you’re fair game for Republican ChristoFascists—you are not safe.

Anyway,…

Republicans want us dead. There's no two ways about it, and nothing they can justify this level of cruelty and evil with. We do not fit into their idea of a perfect world, therefore we must be exterminated.

This is a war for our survival now. Do not be so foolish as to think it is anything but.

This doesn't just affect trans folks, btw. A doctor who doesn't believe it's "ethical" to say, treat a disabled person because they "have poor quality of life already" could easily kill folks. They did it, and are still doing it, throughout the COVID pandemic and before

Which is why it’s important to not be mean.

Their cult teaches them that the world is full of scary monster people who hate them for being so good and loved by god. If you swear at them and call them names or get in their face you’re just doing the cults work for it.

I’m not saying you have to listen to their presentation or try to debate them (and really getting into a debate without thoroughly understanding what they’re being taught will just make things worse)… I am just saying to be polite and say no thank you like if they were trying to hand you a flyer for something you don’t care about.

It’s easier for them to see the world outside their bubble as less scary if they see everyday people just going about their business and being as nice to them as you are to everyone else. This goes doubly for anyone who happens to dress modestly, not swear, and not drink or smoke because whatever you believe, they’ll see you as a “good” person who happens to strangely have no interest in their “message”, and that might be enough to get some curious about the possibility of themselves living in the real world.

It’s sometimes hard to be nice to people who seem to represent something you dislike. Just remember these “elders” are sheltered young men, some of which are getting their first real contact with people of other/no faiths.

They are not your enemy. They are victims.

So I’m from a country family. Part of what I was taught as a kid was guests, no matter if you wanted them are not, are treated to a drink and hospitality. So a few years ago a few of these guys came to my door. It was a really hot day out, like high 90’s. So I invited them in for a drink but I made it very clear, I will listen to their basic conversation while they have a drink but I absolutely have no intention of converting or changing my religion. We had a pleasant conversation for about twenty minutes, then they went on their way without leaving any pamphlets or anything and I figured that was the end of it.

About six months later, I had a new group come to my door. I invited them in for a drink and the two immediately jumped back and went to check my address. They then told me they were told about me in their missionary prep class (because they do that). That I was the only actual ‘good person’ on the route because I didn’t actually yell at them, slam doors in their face, or treat them how they were taught the world was. So we once again had a conversation over tea about how sometimes people just don’t appreciate it when someone shows up to their door trying to push a religion on them. I asked them how they would feel if someone who was Heathenistic appearing on their doorstep telling them how acknowledging Odin as the high god is the only way to save them. They admitted they would be really upset and uncomfortable about that.

Long story short after about two more times of this happening I later learned I was removed from the houses the missionaries were allowed to visit. Apparently I was causing a lot of the young missionaries to question what they were taught and was deemed a concern by the elders of their church because many were asking questions after visiting me. All it took was an offer of a drink and a few kind but intellectual questions to make them ask questions and actually listen to what I was saying.

I guess my overall point is, like the above says you are going to get a lot farther by being kind then being an asshole

Yesterday the 12th of May was Fibromyalgia awareness day. I'm a little late uploading it, but spreading awareness is being done nonetheless. Lots of love for my chronic pain people!! <3

This is fucking embarrassing ‘journalism’ from the BBC.

Guy goes to an NHS doctor, flat-out states the nature of his investigation and gets behind the scenes information on assessments.

Then he hits up three private clinics actively looking for an ADHD diagnosis, has his friends fill out witness forms, and is shocked when he receives a diagnosis.

An utter disgrace.

Turns out, if you go and lie about your symptoms, they’ll diagnose you.

Consider me fucking shocked.

thank you, random white man, for this insight on the condition known to be underdiagnosed in women and people of color

i found the article and it's like, comparing and contrasting private and public clinics I think? It's a little opaque to me (American) what the significance of this is

I'm not sure what the point of this was. Like, the article doesn't really even touch on what his methodology was—it doesn't actually state whether he was filling out the forms honestly, and knowing how an evaluation works and going into the evaluation with the goal of "demonstrating" something about an evaluation infuses inherent bias into everything

this is just yet another thing that serves to create paranoia about people getting prescribed stimulant meds. Something that, in the USA, is difficult to the point that it blocks people from obtaining the care that they need all the time, and i know in many other countries it's even harder

Like, why did he feel the need to do this to begin with. I'm sure that if he went to several different doctors trying to get a diagnosis of chronic constipation, he would get one, because listening to a patient when they bring a concern up to you is Your Job as a doctor

@headspace-hotel uk person checking in! when you go public for an adhd assessment, waiting lists are YEARS long with often no indication of when you'll finally be seen. thus, many people – who are desperate for care – will pay money (which you don't have to do for public healthcare) to go private.

so basically it's stigmatising people who were so desperate that they were willing to find £1,000 to get help.

So this asshole was actively taking precious opportunities and resources away from people who need them?

Is your conclusion “he tried to prove that private clinics are bad, something something, less people will be able to go to private clinics for these resources as a result” or “he took 3 diagnoses in private clinics which could have been 3 other people’s diagnoses and resources”?

He seems to have bypassed the atrociously long waiting list for the NHS appointment - which he biased anyway by disclosing his investigation to the NHS doctor.

He then fabricated symptoms to three private clinics which require two other people to validate his symptoms - all in a bid to frame them as predatory.

This could have been an investigation into underfunding of the NHS and absurd waiting lines forcing people to use private clinics. Instead the story became ‘ADHD is a fun trend and you can just pay to get a diagnosis’.

It’s malicious journalism that casts doubt in the public’s mind. Some people are now not going to believe other people’s ADHD diagnosis on the back of it.

we also want to challenge his assumption that private clinics apparently taking less time to diagnose obvious adhd is a reflection on their lack of diligence - it's much more a reflection on how much more gatekeepy the nhs is encouraged to be, especially when it's about "invisible" or mental health or neurodivergent conditions (we had 11 hours of meetings before getting diagnosed autistic by the nhs at 55 - a diagnosis six different other autistic people had spotted right away)

you see this with gender care too, nhs gender care (assuming you ever make it to the top of a six year waiting list) is like "yes come and see us for a year before we'll consider hrt for you - but not if you're fat or have mental health conditions because fuck you" while private clinics are like "yes we confirm that you are trans, why on earth would we make you wait?"

Yeah, I wonder if the NHS considers the entire time from the start of assessment. Their ‘thorough assessment’ is someone else’s frequent misdiagnosis and the doctor even not believing them at face value.

Penetration is a gender-neutral act. Topping is gender-neutral. Bottoming is gender-neutral. You are not more or less of a man or a woman depending on how you fuck. You are not “fake trans” for having sex a certain way. You are not any less masculine for bottoming or any less feminine for topping.

Additionally, acting like being penetrated is an act of submission is deeply rooted in misogynistic, cisheteronormative ideas of sexual intercourse, as in "penetration is something that is done to women for the sexual gratification of the man, nothing more, therefore it is inherently degrading and feminine".

A cishet man getting pegged by his cishet girlfriend is not gay, he's not less of a man or submissive by default. A cishet man getting pegged by his cishet girlfriend can be sexually dominant and simply likes to be fucked in his ass - these two can co-exist. Yet, in the eyes of cishet society, a man that likes to have his ass played with, must enjoy it because it's "degrading" , not because it simply feels good.

That's why I so heavily preach about the difference between sub/dom/switch and bottom/top/vers. Penetration can be used to increase the feeling and severity of a power dynamic, but it doesn't create one. These two things are entirely separate from eachother, unless connected willingly.

literally all that is standing in the way of me and my degree is

-a paper on captain america being propoganda

-editing a synthesis essay

-a paper on the wild wild historians of the french revolution

-submitting some kind of online training thing

and yet. here i am.

Is this a degree worth having?  Isn’t a degree a certification of proficiency in something useful?  Why does literature require a degree?  Why does philosophy?

Cause my degree is Mechanical Engineering.  Pretty useful.  I wrote no papers on cartoons.  Not everything I did was useful, practical, reasonable, or altogether not-ridiculous, but most of it was.  The thing that kept me an extra semester was Failure Mode and Effects in Design (with a focus on Finite Element Analysis).  You should be happy to know that your aircraft engine mounts were designed by people who completed that course.

I love the liberal arts.  I think they are massively useful, and I wish the STEM majors had a stronger focus on the Humanities, at least in the first year or two of college.  Liberal Arts are valuable for many reasons, one of which is to teach the ability to think critically about Big Ideas.  Does that require a degree?  Why does one need to be certified in that skill?  Is it even possible?  Cause im pretty confident i could get a Masters Degree in English Literature without actually retaining anything of value to society.  Meanwhile, I know multiple machinists that have zero degrees yet can recite Marcus Aurelius and have a deep conversation about its applications to modern society.  I know zero Lit majors who could build me a sawmill if society brook down.

Why do people spend $100k on information that can be gained at the library for free?

Avatar

cant you learn how to build things through job experience? you dont need a degree to watch someone or learn how to build things or understand finances or processing programs or really anything when all of that information is readily accessible through youtube or libraries or free or low cost online programs.

as for having an undergrad liberal arts degree, as someone who is about to complete one, i think its worth it. i plan to use my graduate work to delve more into business and management since i already have a strong humanities background. but that doesnt mean it was useless.

im a dance, history and creative writing major with a professional writing minor. admittedly the creative writing was an accidental major and i should have done something else but i know how to research, get to the bottom of questions, and write really fucking good papers that articulate my thoughts clearly and effectively through the research that i have done. that is perhaps the most useful thing that has come out of my degree.

also, not everyone, myself included, wants to specialize in something in undergrad that is so highly specific because 1. we are all still kids and haven't had a real career epiphany yet and 2. a whole heck of a lot of people are not good at stem. that doesnt mean that you still cant get higher eduaction. also 1/3 of ceos at fortune 500 companies have a liberal arts degree.

and yes, there is a lot wrong with the higher education system costing as much as it does, but thats a whole other issue. if you want to go to college and get in debt for something that wont get you that much of a pay increase, thats on you and you should do your research before committing to something. im graduating with zero student debt and will not have any debt from grad school and already have committed to a job.

tldr theres nothing wrong with getting a liberal arts degree if you know how to use it and best leverage your time there

googledocs you are getting awfully uppity for something that can’t differentiate between “its” and “it’s” correctly

oho and now you’re questioning my adverb usage? you? you?

you fucking dare?

you try to change ‘tears’ to ‘years’ for no reason but don’t catch ‘imporint’???

hey quick question gdocs

I think we forget sometimes just how deranged the fundamentalist christian attitude towards "the flesh" is and just how much this deranged belief impacts fundamentalist christian politics. i can't think of a value in the christian imaginary that is more corrosive towards the goals of compassion and brotherly love, or more conducive to cult-like control of congregants by clergy. maybe this is just the reichian in me, but the control of people's sexual lives - prohibitions on masturbation, casual sex, sex before marriage, and so on - is a very successful way to channel people's libidinal energies from self-satisfaction (a kind of psycho-sexual autonomy) to dependence on the approval of authoritarian figures, reinforced by feelings of guilt produced by "sinful" pleasure.

and of course the churches can't be alone in this. for this to work the heavenly father and the padre have to be identified with the real father figure in one's life, and so i would suspect the vast majority of christian fundamentalists who follow through on the sexual prohibitions grew up in households where masturbation was punished, where the sex lives of the children of the house were policed by the parents and where the outcome of this was the development of a fear of pleasure, or feelings of guilt associated with sexual pleasure in particular, and an identification of authority in general with the authoritarian mother and/or father.

and all of this i think puts into perspective more the current puritan wave in american culture surrounding youth sexuality. there is a certain squeamishness, and the fundamentalists aren't alone in this, in even admitting that youth sexuality is a thing, that we discover genital pleasure very early on in life (unconsciously in infancy, which is has to be repressed by parents with a slap of the infant's hand, and consciously not much long after) and that the intervention by adults in the sexuality of children (through authoritarian repression but also through pedophilic participation) does harm to children by traumatically interrupting their natural course of sexual development.

but we can't even discuss these things honestly and realistically because if you so much as use the phrase "youth sexuality" you are immediately accused of being a pedophile, and this has a chilling effect on discourse around youth sexuality such that no one talks about youth sexuality because doing so could result in accusations which are such a scarlet letter that even if they are false they still result in the termination of critical thought towards what the accused has to say - full takeover of discourse by anxiety and emotion, wilhelm reich's "emotional plague". unfortunately this gives the most shrill moral panickers, the real zealots who have internalized their sexual repression and subsumed their sexual energies by religion, more and more control over the debate, and has turned this debate in non-scientific directions, with immense social harm being done through reactionary legislation against the youth justified by emotionally-infused religious ideology.

even among my pretty progressive classmates early in university there was a kind of total disgust and shock at freud’s essays on sexuality and the implication of earlier developmental forms of pre- or proto-sexual pleasure, a disgust that was itself generally framed as a progressive reaction to a freud who was taken to be regressive/sexist/even pedophilic. which i always found particularly bizarre because to accept this view you basically have to repress or refuse to acknowledge all of your normal early experiences with that pleasure, which is comprehensible if you’re a religious fundamentalist but always seemed more out of place to me in secular/atheist raised middle class liberals.
