Mr. Brevoort, what is the one New 52 book that is the most disappointing to you? I am not trying to stir up conflict here. You've been vocal on your opinions with MoS, New52 (in general), The Flash... I just wonder, as you are an experienced, celebrated professional in comic industry, what the most disappointing book is in that line-up?
I think this is a very subjective question that would have a very subjective answer, and I don’t know that it would be appropriate for me to be slagging on somebody else’s book in this way. Easier, I think, to speak in broader terms.
So it’s disappointing to me that the wider range of material that DC tried as a part of the 52 launch couldn’t find an audience. Regardless of the individual merits of the titles, the fact that they were trying things like G.I. COMBAT or BLACKHAWKS or AMETHYST or even JONAH HEX (which is still going) was nice to see. Ditto the attempt at greater diversity among their line in terms of representation.
Individually disappointing to me is the overall new casting of Superman as the young disaffected misunderstood alien boy, who is distrusted by the public at large and doesn’t seem to have a home. I can see why they went that route, particularly with the MAN OF STEEL film in the pipeline and the success of SMALLVILLE—but the character just somehow doesn’t relate as Superman to me. (But that’s all right so long as lots of other readers do relate to what they’re doing.)
