I can't believe how goofy people are being about the AO3 DDoS situation. One side of the debate is like "ah, it's probably those Nefarious Russian Hackers carrying out another false flag operation!" and the other side is like "a real hacktivist group wouldn't use this sort of fandom-centric language, so clearly the attack never happened and AO3 themselves staged it in order to make themselves look like victims!", and these are both unhinged things to believe.
Like, it's fucking 4channers. It's always fucking 4channers. Pretending to be from a random African nation is literally a meme for those guys, and who else would be dumb enough to try and hold a registered nonprofit hostage for bitcoin?

it’s been nearly 24 hours without my wife (the several tabs i had open on ao3 that automatically reloaded when i opened them to try read and salvage what remained). my heart is broken, my crops are shrivelling, but i stand tall with my hand over my heart in honour of those fighting this great war. my heart goes out to the soldiers (volunteers), may their work be quick and successful.
A03 is Back, and Please Do Not Blindly Spread The Claim That A Group Called "Anonymous Sudan" Is Behind This
A03 is back online, and that's great! However, there are posts going around right now blindly saying that a group called "Anonymous Sudan" is behind the attack and repeating the group's stated goals. As A03 has already said, there is good reason to doubt that this group is being honest about it's political motivations and affiliations. We don't know the whole story yet, but it's quite possible that the group is attempting to intentionally stoke islamophobia.
Please do not blindingly spread posts repeating the group's motivation, and be extremely wary of islamophobic statements that might be coming across your dash. More information will come out in time as security experts are able to do their job and trace down the group in question.
remember to give kudos, leave comments, and generally show your appreciation to the fic writers who produce the content we so dearly missed yesterday when ao3 went down
Let’s be real, in the next few days/months, AO3 could be like “hey, due to the unexpected costs of maintaining and updating our servers after the attack, we would need about 10K please. We would accept any penny you can bear to part with, but don’t force yourself!”
