I'm a Work in Progress

@thegirlwholovespines

21, she/hers, RWBY addict, especially Rosegarden, plant science major, yes I own at least a dozen house plants, Heartstopper is my only personality trait right now. Maisie Peters and Taylor Swift super fan.

In true me fashion, what was supposed to be a cute little snippet for an event turned into a two-shot that goes way too in depth about Best Farm Boy post v8. Because I still actually want to participate in RG Kiss Day…I’ll post what inspired it now and then clean up and get the rest on Ao3 later.

This is the important stuff anyways ;). Here’s some v10 reunion speculation/wishes.

***

“Ruby!”

His feet moved before his mind caught up, before her name was even fully out of his mouth. He was glad everyone was back—overjoyed beyond words—but he wouldn’t deny that seeing her specifically standing in the entrance of Shade Academy, alive and whole and looking even better than the visage of her he seared into his memory, caused his heart to soar to new heights. And he should temper himself, he should, but in that singular moment everything was right again.

For just one moment, nothing else in the world mattered but the fact Ruby Rose and her team had returned.

ROSEGARDEN VOLUME 10 PROMPT: SECRET TRAINING

  1. During the time team RWBY and Jaune weren’t present, Oscar has made a name for himself in Vacuo for fighting off Grimm at a young age, with the skills he inherited from Ozpin. People refer to him as “The Prodigy”.
  2. Taiyang Xiao long will be in Vacuo, and reunite with his daughters.
  3. Headmaster Theodore wishes to provide advanced training to team RWBY and Jaune, to help them get stronger.
  4. Tai being an overprotective father bluntly tells Theodore he does not want his daughters training for the war heading their way.
  5. Ruby and Yang argue against their fathers wishes, to which family drama ensues with the three.
  6. Tai grudgingly accepts Yang participating in the training, but refuses to back down from Ruby joining.
  7. Tai makes everyone swear they would not show what they had learned from Theodore to Ruby including Ozpin, who at the time was in possession of Oscar’s body.
  8. Ruby angrily storms off from her father and walks the streets of Vacuo, alone to her thoughts.

Alright that’s enough context, onto the prompt!!!

So yesterday I met Aaron Dismuke at a con and he is legit the sweetest person ever he really liked my Ruby cosplay too. We talked Rosegarden, Oscar, the merge, he mentioned the Oscar protection squad and how we are doing a splendid job, Oscar’s trauma and much more. I also got both a photo and autograph. Anyway the main reason for this post is that he did a recording for me and I legit died. Btw this was all his idea ( I didn’t know what I wanted him to say).

I believe I can post it here

Anyway here it is

Please no hate, especially not to Aaron, me or the rosegarden community. I shared this out I’d love for this community. Also it’s meant to be fun that’s what shipping is. I can’t wait to see what you guys create with this ❤️ also if you guys could link this post, this video is very dear to me. Have fun 😁

Thinking about how Ozpin once told Oscar that:

"(Ruby) possesses something unquantifiable. A spark that can inspire others even in the darkest of times." (Read as: give hope)

And how later on Ruby says that food always makes her feel better and we see Oscar overhear that conversation. Only for Maria to chime in while he's looking at Ruby and says:

"You keep that fire fed."

Almost as if Maria's indirectly encouraging him to look out for Ruby.

And then later on in Argus, Oscar sees Ruby struggling with her team. He tries to stand up for her and it backfires. So he disappears to sort his own feelings out, but when he does come back he's got a red patch on his shoulders signifying that he wants to help her carry her burdens... and he's also made her some food to help her feel better after a long day.

"Oh, I thought everyone would appreciate a hot meal after... (looks at Ruby) spending all day looking for me, apparently."

And then how Ruby in Volume 9 doesn't have enough hope left after the loss of Atlas and Penny to keep herself or others inspired. And that's driven home even further by Neo taking "Oscar" away from her, the symbol of what little hope she does have left. The manifestation the people she hasn't lost yet.

Something something about how he is both the sun that keeps her warm and drives away her grief, while also being the wood (Oscar Pine) that keeps her fire lit.

Hi! I was wondering if you had any favorite headcanons (made by you, or thought of by somebody else) about RoseGarden? There's a lot of things one can come up with for this sort of pairing, so I'm really curious about them.

I've seen some posts from others in passing, but can't tell you any one place to look for them specifically. I do invite anyone that sees this post to share any they have though!! As for me... ough where to start aha. oh wait an easy one

OSCAR FELL FIRST RUBY FELL HARDER AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.

Bro literally said "woah" when he first met her and is Aware of just how Down Bad he's been this entire time. He's fine with it never being reciprocated though and doesn't want to pressure here. A very selfless love. Whereas I expect Ruby to get back from Total Trauma Island to a series of small "oh." moments that build up to a much bigger:

"Oh."

I like to think Ruby is demi-aroace. I can see her realization being an 'oh i have been a little bit in love with him this whole time' situation, but she just didn't realize because - like all her other feelings up to that point - she had been suppressing them. OR she looks back, acknowledges how much she's always cared for him and has a sort of "if it was ever going to be anyone, it was going to be you" moment. And in the face of all her loneliness and fear and grief she decides to 'trust love' and be a little bit selfish about this one thing.

aka just as Ruby chose adventure and adventure chose Oscar, Ruby chooses to love Oscar on purpose while he is sitting there like "I never had a choice but to love you. Okay this is getting long and less narratively focused so i'm gonna put it under a read more:

ok ok - so you've mentioned Oscar's absence is just starkly obvious in Ever After. How so? Or more specific, how much different do you think things would have been if he was there? Especially in light of....... that recent event.

Thank you so much for your patience @skynapple! I knew this would be a long answer so it took me a bit to gather everything.

I think I've mentioned it in different ways across a few posts by now, but I'll try and summarize it all here!!

How Oscar's Absence Has Been Emphasized Throughout V9 (Specifically Through Ruby's Attachment to Him)

The first thing that clues us into this is actually how v8 is set up. When the teams are split, they're split by pairings. Or at the very least, foils (I will be referring to ship names just for conveniences sake).

Yang vs. Blake Ren vs. Nora Jaune vs. Weiss Oscar vs. Ruby

And we have multiple examples of who is supposed to foil who by the orders they're standing in the opening specifically. Which, as we all know, is full of symbolism and foreshadowing for the volume as a whole.

Example 1: We have the Bees at the center followed by Renora, Whiteknight, and Rosegarden left to right on either side of them.
Example 2: We have Ruby and Yang set as foils here with where they're positioned in proximity to the camera as the 'leaders' of each group. But if you look at them in a lineup order again from the outside in, it starts with Renora followed by RG, then WK and BB are flipped.
Example 3: Technically these are the first shots focused on division in the entire opening... and it's literally who mirrors who. Bees at the far left and right. Renora the next ones in. Then Whiteknight. And Rosegarden again.

Beyond the symbolism in the opening, this is reinforced by what happens over the course of the volume.

Speaking about tension and conflict to build romance:

Bumbleby's conflict was Adam stalking Blake, and Yang upset by her leaving because Blake was scared, but gradually more relieved as she proved that she would always stayed by her side and fight together

Renora's conflict was Ren being stubborn and almost risking his life to a grimm that killed both his parents and Nora stopping him, leading them to a better strategy attack

~

We already saw Oscar suggesting Ruby to tell Ironwood the truth, maybe Oscar will struggle to 'share her burden' because she's like her sister and doesn't like being vulnerable? Or maybe it will be about the merge and we'll have a parallel to Blake in V1 talking about "the man with two souls fighting for control" ?

Of the main three ships, they all had a big tension and conflict leading up to V8, and then had a secondary one just by virtue of the separation in Atlas.

Yes BB's conflict was Adam plus Blake running away while Renora's was Ren's tunnel vision in v4... but then in V8 Yang is worried that Blake thinks less of her for prioritizing Mantle over Amity. And Ren and Nora are having a conflict of ideals AND miscommunication.

For Rosegarden, their conflict started with not agreeing on how to handle Ironwood and then became stretched out by ending up on opposite teams while Atlas was falling. The difference between RG and the other ships is that eVERYONE ELSE GOT TO STAY REUNITED AT THE END OF V8, BUT RG DIDN'T. 😭😭😭

I have a feeling the rest of their conflict in the Vacuo arc is going to have multiple layers and be very personal to their individual characters. For starters, there's a matter of how to sort out leadership. Ruby used to be head of the team and became the symbol of hope for All of Remnant after her broadcast... but in her absence, Oscar will have stepped up to the plate in her place. There's going to be some fumbling to get them back on the same page again to a point where they are properly sharing the weight of their burdens together.

Then we know that Oscar probably thinks she died! :'D Which, in tandem with his attachment, admiration, and protectiveness of her in the past, sets him up perfectly to not want to lose her again. Be that struggling with sticking too close, keeping his distance from not wanting to get too attached again (too bad boy, you can't run from this), or a mix of both... it's anyone's guess how he'll handle it.

We also know, thanks to Neo, just how important Oscar is to Ruby and that the thought of losing him is something she literally could not handle. So there is almost certainly going to be a mutual protectiveness going on there. they can have a LITTLE codependency, as a treat. /lh

We also have VERY SOLID SETUPS for their individual character arcs mirroring each other so strongly. And it's impossible for those themes to not be explored at this point.

From their very introductions, they both address each other's core conflicts with their first words to each other.

Oscar: Woah, you... have silver eyes.

Silver eyes being symbolic of her burden as Salem's adversary and the mirror that reflects humanity's hope back onto darkness.

Ruby: Who... are you?

Oscar being the next (and likely final) Ozcarnation who's entire character arc is a struggle of identity.

Oscar's "I always knew I wanted to be more than a farmhand... but this? Who would ask for this?" to Ruby's "I wanted to be the hero, like the stories that my mom read to me."

Oscar's "I thought the idea of falling through Remnant into a new world was... exciting. I never understood why she was so sad when she finally made it back home." to Ruby's "I don't want to be me anymore."

Ruby's "What if you could be anyone?" to Oscar's "I'm just going to be another one of his lives, aren't I?"

god the way they've written this story... i sincerely don't understand how people can watch ALL of this, all the moments i didn't mention cause i'm too lazy to turn this thread into another essay, and still say they don't see it. 😭

however their conflict is handled, i know i'm going to be very not normal about it every step of the way and i'm so freaking excited

I went way too far into AO3 and now I'm just 😳 I feel so gross now. People can have their things but oh my gosh I stumbled past a story description and I'm just scarred for life.

I'm going to go into education in college and I hate that I have to think about this. I even have to do this with my daycare job. I hate that I have to figure out how I would protect my students if there was an active shooter. We do intruder drills and I just want to not have to do this. These kids are beautiful, they deserve the world. They deserve to not have to even think about gun violence, but that isn't reality. It breaks my heart seeing flags half mast at schools. I had a student ask why the flag was like that and I didn't want to explain to my student that it was like that because multiple children that her age were shot to death at their schools, in class. This is something I think about frequently and I just want to be with my kids, not mentally somewhere else trying to process that people lost a child like one of my students that is sitting in front of me. I hate how this situation is "normal" to people. Children going to school with their backpacks and lunch boxes shouldn't come home in caskets to be buried.

Imagine Summer and Tai breaking down when Ruby’s eyes opened for the first time, realizing that she would be drawn into this fight no matter if she wanted to become a huntress or not.

Her fate was sealed. so summer tried to prevent it by taking down Salem.

But it wasn’t enough.

Imagine if Salem realized what Summer was fighting for, and told Summer: “I was a mother like you once…and from one mother to another? It will never be enough.”

This would explains why Taiyang is so overprotective of Ruby, since she’s his daughter. But it also explains why Taiyang chose to let Ruby become a huntress. Her mother tried to stop that destiny but failed. Taiyang realized his daughter had no choice.

Grief, Guilt, and Bloodied Hands

cross posted from twitter I want to talk about this episode's use of 'bloodied hands' and how it ties into Ruby as well as Rosegarden. This post does get *dark* tho & includes shots from some of the more distressing scenes of v9e8 so please tread with caution.

Do you ever have those times that you know you need to be responsible and actually go to bed but then your brain goes haywire and you can't stop being on your phone, even though you know better? This is an impulse I've been working on for the last bit, but yesterday and today, everything was thrown out the window and you have to get up in five hours but still can't convince yourself to go to sleep. Just very exhausted.

My reaction to the middle 8 of "Lost the Breakup" by Maisie Peters was just laughter. A good cackle. Maisie is iconic for this song, I just love it so much. I'm obsessed with it 😉 also that prechorus is so frickin amazing, like how the hell did she come up with that?

Rosegarden, Cinderella, and Fairytale Romance

0r Why I Will Eat My Glass Slipper if Oscar and Ruby Don't Dance by the End of the Show

-

Part of Ruby's arc in v9 is realizing that the ideals and dreams she had as a (younger) child are too ambitious and unrealistic. That life, huntresses, herself… they can't be like the fairytales.

It is a very big lesson to learn but, much like all things in RWBY, there is a push for nuance. Weiss and Blake even have called out in show that those storybook morals are too simplistic or black and white. Ruby is overwhelmed and breaking under the weight of her burdens and is being given the opportunity to either keep trudging on until it destroys her, or leave all of it behind.

But what about a secret hidden third option? Can she not leave Ruby Rose behind, not become someone entirely new, but rather… Choose to be the version of Ruby Rose she wants to be on purpose? And not as a result of other people's pressures or expectations that she's internalized for too long?

The point I'm trying to make here is that she can admit that holding herself to the impossible standard of an untouchable hero that always wins in the end isn't sustainable, but still find the intersection of fairytale and reality.

Now how does this tie in to RG? For that, I want to talk about two things:

  • The other canon romance plots in show
  • One of Ruby's smaller/more subtle 'allusions'
