The Arroyo toad [Anaxyrus californicus] is an endangered species of toad native to sandy upland habitats in Southern California and Baja California. Although typically nocturnal, these toads are active both in the day and at night during mating season. During the dry season they fall into a dormant state known as aestivation in order to conserve water and energy. Images by C. Brown.
