The Dogist

A photo-documentary series about the beauty of dogs.

Niki, Golden Retriever (1 y/o), Madison Square Park, New York, NY • “She’s very affectionate – she loves everybody. She ate a few beds when she was growing up, and she still destroys a couple of things. She’s our first girl. There’s no kissing my wife without her jumping in between.”

Does your dog let you kiss other people?

Penny, “Proper Mutt” (4 y/o), Little West & 3rd Pl., New York, NY • “She’s a rescue from @heartsandbonesrescue. She showed up with a broken leg – it was rotting, so they amputated it. She’s the most loving thing. She’s very well-loved around the neighborhood for her little tripod walk. Her Instagram is @penny_thetripod, but she’s no influencer… just the neighborhood follows her, like 20 people. She dressed up as a spotted lantern fly for Halloween.” @penny_thetripod, a rescue via @heartsandbonesrescue

What was your dog last Halloween?

Ruben, Toy Poodle (10 w/o), Riverside Park, New York, NY • “He’s not food-motivated. He likes to sleep only on me, and he likes the calm playlist. He’s my first dog. My in-laws have a Toy Poodle that I really bonded with during the pandemic. They’re really smart and really sweet. He’s gonna go where I go.”

Did you bond with someone’s dog during the pandemic?

Banks, Bernedoodle (4 y/o), W 11th & Hudson St., New York, NY • “He’s incredibly stubborn and strong-willed. I work in SoHo, and he stops in three to four different coffee shops on the way home for people to either pet him or feed him. He most of the time gets what he wants.”

Jasper, Dachshund/Pomeranian mix (14 y/o), 25th & Broadway, New York, NY • “He’s just so easygoing. He goes everywhere with us – he’s a good traveling dog. His one trick is he stands up – he used to do it for a lot longer. If he had a tutu he could’ve been in a circus. Now he lives with two cats, so it’s a three-ring circus.”

Would you get tickets to Jasper’s circus?

Cher, German Shepherd (2.5 m/o), 14th & 9th Ave., New York, NY • “She’s teething.”

Enzo, Silken Windhound (3 y/o), Riverside Park, New York, NY • “Like Enzo Ferrari – expensive, a little bit fast. He’s incredibly sweet, and he really loves playing soccer. Our friend is the owner of Sadie (the Silken Windhound), who you’ve met. That’s why we got him. And she was inspired by Sirrus – she saw him on The Dogist.”

Were you ever inspired to get a dog you saw on The Dogist?

Dallas, Australian Cattle Dog (2 y/o), Thompson & Spring St., New York, NY • “He’s from Dallas. He loves ice cream – he gets a little cup of vanilla and drools. He’s obsessed with his toy tire – he’ll throw it at you trying to get you to play with him.” @dallasthecattledog

Who is getting their dog a little cup of vanilla this weekend?

Charlie, mix (1.5 y/o), 58th & Broadway, New York, NY • “He’s from Antigua. He’s a character – he won’t eat unless I’m eating. He’ll eat treats on walks all the time, but his actual dinner… he waits. When I go to work in the morning, he knows that I’m gonna leave him, so he’ll boycott eating. He also hates skateboards.” @adventures.of.charlie_, a rescue via @pupstarzrescue

What is your dog’s dining etiquette?

Baci, mix (7 y/o), LaGuardia & Bleecker St., New York, NY • “The day we got her she ate two chicken bones off the street. She’s like a speeding bullet on the beach.”

Which breeds do you think Baci is a mix of?

Frank Sinatra, Puli (8 y/o), Washington Square Park, New York, NY • ”Whenever anyone comes over to talk to me or to hang out, he goes f*#@in nuts. He has to get all the attention – he barks, rips up toys… he’s gotta be center stage. I stopped going to the gym because managing his cords is a workout. I have to use my hands and a lot of muscle.”

Does your dog give you a workout? What type?

Blue, Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix (6 y/o), Houston & Sullivan St., New York, NY • “He’s a rescue from the ACC (@nycacc) – I’ve had him for four months. This toy is a big deal for him. He’s wild on the street otherwise and with it he’s super chill. It’s his pacifier; without it he’s a loon.”

Does your dog have a toy they can’t live without?

Buck, Pomsky (1.5 y/o), Prince & Mulberry St., New York, NY • “He’s crazy, but he’s great. He’s super sweet and really smart. He’s food obsessed, but you can train him with it. He got stolen once for eight days – he was a really cute puppy, and someone dognapped him. I went crazy – I put tons of ads all over Facebook, I covered all of San Diego in posters, and I had a dog detective. I had to pay to get him back. He was okay at the end of the day.”

Milo, Pomeranian (3 y/o), Bleecker & Broadway, New York, NY • “I brush him every day – people ask why he’s so fluffy, but he’s just naturally like that.”

Navy, Dalmatian (7 m/o), Elizabeth & Bleecker St., New York, NY • “She’s not your typical Dalmatian; she’s very docile and gentle. They’re rambunctious and high-energy, and she’s very calm. She’s a velcro dog – she’s very clingy, which I didn’t expect. In the shower she needs to be near you, so she sits in the hamper.” @navyandema

Does your dog follow you into the bathroom?

Wookie, Bohemian Shepherd (8 m/o), Washington Square Park, New York, NY • “They’re from the Czech Republic and descended from the German Shepherd. They’re bred to be watch dogs; they’re just loud, not a protection dog. He’s one of the first 50 in the United States. We have a mirror in our lobby and every morning he barks at himself in the mirror. The doorman calls him ‘the noise maker’. His favorite song is ‘Jump On It.’” @wookiethecookie11

Billy, Labrador Retriever/Staffordshire Terrier mix (2 y/o), Great Jones & Lafayette St., New York, NY • “Billy’s obsessed with the fire station. They give him treats – I’m pretty sure he would live with them. He’s a foster fail from @socialteesnyc. He was my fifth foster with them; I’d always gotten older dogs or dogs with a bad history, and I was like, ‘don’t ever give me a puppy!’ When I showed up he was 12 weeks old, and I was done. I thought about making him an Instagram because mine is just all him – the people I work with are like, ‘why do you only post your dog?’ And I’m like, ‘he’s the only interesting thing!’”

What percentage of your Instagram is of your dog?

Frosty, Siberian Husky/German Shepherd mix, Great Jones & Lafayette St., New York, NY • “He’s a rescue from Tennessee. He’s just chill. I got lucky with him – he’s had a chill personality ever since I brought him home.” @frosty.of.nyc

Maple, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Sullivan & Prince St., New York, NY • “We’re watching him for our friends for the week. He’s actually very sweet and calm. He never complains about anything.”

Mazie, Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull mix (2 y/o), 22nd & 6th Ave., New York, NY • “She’s a super-smeller, and she loves food – all food. Her favorite is cheese. Her original name when we adopted her was Nosey, which makes sense. She'll do anything for a good spot in the sun and a piece of American cheese. She’s a very sweet and kind dog.”

Is your dog a super-smeller?
