Ellen Ochoa (Born May 10, 1958) The current director of the Johnson Space Center, Ellen Ochoa, is an engineer, a former astronaut, and the first Hispanic woman to go to space. From La Mesa, California, she achieved her doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1985. She patented an optical system for NASA spacecraft and led a research group at the NASA Ames Research Center. In 1993 she served a nine-day mission aboard the shuttle discovery, studying the earth's ozone layer. She has logged nearly a thousand hours in space as a member of missions STS-56, STS-66, STS-96, and STS-110. In 2013, Ochoa became the first Hispanic director of NASA's Johnson Space Center and only the second female director.
