Benedict Cumberbatch literally compared autistic kids to Frankenstein’s monster and said that we shouldn’t give autistic people ‘false hope’ by showing them in a positive light
please stop supporting him
alright, newleafexplorer, my friend. i get that you are trying to do A Thing here. but…as an actual autistic person, and one whose special interests include that boobies cannibalism guy, i’d really appreciate if you’d do some more thinking before jumping straight to calling for everyone to stop supporting him.
now, i’m gonna touch on your summaries of what he said. there are some valid criticisms of it that i disagree with some, but that have merit.
i’m gonna copy/paste in the relevant bits, because i know none of y’all are clicking links
BEGIN BREAKDOWN OF BEN C QUOTES
[on researching the physicality of Frankenstein’s Creature] “We talked a lot about about what we were doing as far as the world that influenced Danny and Nick in terms of wanting to do this project. We went to two extraordinary schools for autistic children and there is an element of the movement that reflects that but also as Jonny was saying it’s an evolution of a man who is fully formed so it’s an evolution with a fully grown body, it’s as if a man is born again as an elephant. Sort of backwards. It’s about not knowing anything about what they’ve got but being capable of doing much more than a child so it was about how to stagger that progression and having certain barriers to being fully evolved with certain autistic movements.”
breaking this down: basically, benedict is rambling because he was filming sherlock, rehearsing a play, and recording a radio play all at once, so it’s hard to know what he’s actually trying to fucking say. it comes down to “we borrowed stim and stim-looking movements for our depiction of the creature.”
saying he “compared autistic kids to frankenstein’s monster” pulls it so far out of context it becomes an actual lie. the creature is struggling with his humanity and whether or not he is human. that hits home pretty hard with me. making him look more autistic makes him more relatable to me, because i also struggle with looking sufficiently human. i can definitely see why people would dislike it, but it’s definitely different from literally comparing kids to monsters.
the second bit:
I think it’s a really dangerous thing to toy with [labeling fictional characters as autistic]. People talk about me doing that quite a lot and that being a good thing for people who are on the spectrum, which is great. But I don’t go into a job going, ‘Is this autism? Is this Asperger’s? Is this some other form of slight learning difficulty or disability?’ I’m very wary of that, because I’ve met people with those conditions. It’s a real struggle all the time. Then these people pop up in my work and they’re sort of brilliant, and they on some levels almost offer false hope for the people who are going through the reality of it.
now, this second one is really controversial, even among the autistic ben c fans. hilariously enough, i think some of the reaction may be because, being autistic, many of us suck at looking at things from the perspective of someone else with different experiences.
we’re all thinking as if benedict is talking about autistic people making autistic headcanons. he is almost definitely not talking about those people. he has very little awareness of those people.
he’s talking about the people who label every oddball genius “mildly autistic” just because they are quirky and smart. now, autistic people do this for perfectly legit reasons and you can stop me when you lower me into the cold, hard ground. when allistic people do this, it IS shit, because it’s giving us a stereotype. “you have asperger’s? oh yeah, like rainman!” (throws toothpicks on floor) “HOW MANY?”
benedict is talking about that. benedict is talking about the parents who assume their autistic child will look like sheldon from big bang. yes, his phrasing makes it glaringly obvious that he doesn’t really have conversations with many people in the autism activism movement. many people have not. at one point, you and i had no idea that autism was not a disability. it’s hardly a crucifiable offense.
END BREAKDOWN OF THE BEN C QUOTES
WRAPUP, WOO.
i have seen the imitation game. i don’t care what benedict says, that movie was about a sad gay autistic man. the behaviors, the reactions, it was all there. that was the best, most accurate, least offensive portrayal of an autistic character i have seen, ever. like shit i’m gonna stop supporting him! he plays characters i can see myself in. nobody else does that.
also, i like his weird face. sue me.
i’m sure your intention wasn’t to upset anyone! but seeing me used to reduce this dude i really admire into some kinda one-dimensional target really hurts. it feels like i’m being told that by liking this guy, i’m failing my people.
i know you’ve got the best intentions, but please be careful when you pull words out of context or summarize them too succinctly! words have power and consequences!
This is so, so much better worded than my explanation. Thank you!
“he plays characters i can see myself in. nobody else does that.“
That up there is what I think is the most intriguing thing about Benedict. He doesn’t believe his characters are on the autistic spectrum, and yet so many times he plays people who can be percieved that way or he himself plays them that way even if it isn’t his intention.
I’ve said this many times but here it is again:
Alan Turing could be considered an aspie, and *might* have been diagnosed as one if he was alive now.
It’s been widely debated if Sherlock is on the autistic spectrum for YEARS- Benedict’s version especially so.
His portrayal of Victor Frankenstein was very Sherlock-y, so you could say he was on the spectrum as well, plus as it says up there ^ how he played the Creature was partly inspired by autistic children.
Little Charles might have not been autistic but to me he definitely seemed to have some sort of neurodivergence.
He was frequently questioned during the promotion of The Fifth Estate if he believes Julian Assange is on the spectrum. To which he responded with “I’m not a psychologist so I don’t know”- something I wish he would have just stuck with during Imitation Game promo instead of what he said. :|
I could go on…
But one thing he cannot argue is the possibility of Martin Crieff being an aspie. As John Finnemore said in response to a fan “Let’s say it’s present but undiagnosed.” (I love him so much for that instead of just turning the suggestion down.)
Benedict choses characters which resonate with him. I think the type of characters he keeps on picking to play really says something about himself. He keeps picking characters that could be considered neurodivergent, and playing them as seemingly neurodivergent but he doesn’t view them that way when so many other people do.
That and a few other things just make think that the reason why he is so good at *unintentionally* playing accurate depictions of neurodivergent characters is because he is one himself.
Given what I just posted in response to this ongoing conversation, I also 100% agree with what phunkyvanspam just added above. That is why I am still interested in Benedict’s career (he plays so many neurodiverse charactes and does it so incredibly well), and why I have compassion for and patience with many of his missteps in media and interviews.
I just so very, very much wish that he could learn to see and embrace certain aspects of himself. Striving constantly to be things you aren’t is bloody exhausting!
Anthony: “Thank you for helping my boss.”
Carl: “What do you know? You’ve made a friend.”
so freaking adorable.
listen to me y'all. listen. hear me out. i know the hesitating to kill the monsters with your children's face angst is spicy. i know it's tempting. don't fall for it.
phil didn't fucking hesitate for a second. he's the one who got everyone else to stop hesitating. once he logged back in, he attacked the codes immediately and shouted for everyone else to do the same. he hates the imposters and he hates them more for daring to use his children's faces. the angst isn't the idea that he would struggle to obliterate a threat to his family.
no, the angst is what happens after.
the angst is the next time tallulah needs her papa's attention when he has his airpods in and she shakes her maracas and he doesn't hear and she has to decide between asking him about the botantical garden and "it shook its maracas too much so i killed it"
the angst is the next time chayanne is feeling clingy or scared and wants to stick close to his father's side but in the back of his mind is just "it got close to me too much so i killed it"
the angst is that phil can see their fear because he knows them and he reassures him as much as he can that he would never hurt them and he would always know the real them but all of them have to live with the question of "but what if you don't"
the angst is phil giving them passwords and code phrases to memorize to prove its really them to soothe their fear of him not being able to recognize them because he solves his problems in the most straightforward, practical way he can but now they're just scared of what if the codes learn the passwords and phil explains that the passwords are just another layer of protection they're not everything and then they're right back where they started
the angst is two children huddled up together in a hotel away from the windows trying to decide if it would be better for their father to kill them by mistake or die by the hand of a monster wearing their face because he didn't think to strike first
the angst is chayanne privately asking phil the question he's trying desperately to pretend tallulah hasn't also thought of: what happens if wilbur comes back and it isn't wilbur?
the angst is phil replying with "he's my son too. i'll recognize him." and he doesn't remember everything from before the island but there's an old ache in his wing that seems to tell him that recognition may not have been enough
the angst isn't that phil hesitates. the angst is that phil doesn't. the angst is that phil loves his children too much to hesitate. the angst is that sometimes doing the best you possibly can by your children will still fuck them up so so so bad
It’s pretty funny how Ludinus definitely does not give off the right vibes, but when you go and see Trent right after Ludinus it’s so easy to be like, yeah, no, that other guy’s vibes are WAY worse who even cares what Ludinus is up to.
I graduated high school in 99.
There was a student at our school named Wayne.
Wayne was gay. It was obvious. He was unable to stay in the closet even if he wanted to. To make matters worse, he was also Black. From a bullying standpoint, that was not a great combo. Both Black and white students made fun of him relentlessly. He was ostracized from the only community that may have given him protection. Only us theater kids stuck up for him, but not to significant effect.
Wayne was bullied so much that at one point he finally snapped and attacked his bullies with a lunch tray. I was actually seated in perfect line of sight and just sat there chewing my soggy fries in stunned silence. It didn't even seem real as I was witnessing it. The image of him wailing on his main bully as the food on his tray flew off is permanently logged into my long term memory.
The bully he attacked had blood all over his face and went straight to the nurse. Other than superficial cuts, he was not injured.
Before the attack, Wayne went to teachers for help. He went to guidance counselors for help. He went to the principals for help.
He did all of the things you were supposed to do. No one helped him. They wagged a finger at the bullies and warned them to stop.
Wayne's lunch tray melee was the only thing that worked. His bullies stayed far away from him. But a week later Wayne was expelled and the bullies were given no punishment.
So... no.
No one in my school talked about being trans.
Because the only way to survive being openly queer was to bash people with a lunch tray.
the admin that always listens to phil when they play cucurucho instead of chayanne means one of two things that are equally as funny:
a) the admin is one of the funniest ppl on that server for commiting to the bit phil started
OR
b) they've played chayanne so much that this point it's an automatic reation to do what phil says
When I actually be studying/doing assignments I wasted my time on this-
Anyway enjoy-
When do you think Brian fell in love with Justin?
Omg, a QaF fan??? In my DMs??? It’s more likely than you think. Ok I have many a thought and I’m going to work backwards. It might be controversial b/c I think it happened early on in season 1 because…
By 1x10 Brian is so whipped he drives all night to New York to find Justin and even though he is beyond pissed the second Justin gives him puppy dog eyes Brian is falling over himself to get inside him.
Look at Justin’s smug little face! He knows that he has Brian wrapped around his little finger. He starts stripping and Brian doesn’t do anything but Justin is so confident he teases him and asks if he needs help taking his clothes off. Justin is the king.
Before that in 1x08 after Craig beats Brian up outside of Babylon and gives Justin the ultimatum to go home now or never again; Brian storms off yelling an emphatic “fuck!” He thought Justin would go home and in that moment he was mourning the relationship. I think Brian was already in love. It hurt him to see Justin being asked to choose between his family and Brian but really between his true self and being accepted by his family. Brian knows this pain and it’s why he had not yet come out by this point in the show and it tears him up to see Justin go through that.
Two episodes before, 1x06, we see Brian looking at Justin’s drawing while someone under the covers is giving him head. This scene is the first time we see Brian have sex with someone else while actively imagining they are Justin instead. Also he goes to the art show at the center in this ep and he would not have done that just for Lindsay. He is there for Justin and he is sooo in love.
In 1x05 Brian kicks a trick out because the guy was rude to Justin. At this point Justin is already much more meaningful to him than a one night stand. After this Brian tells Justin not to rely on anyone else and the only person you can trust is yourself. I think this scene is so telling because ostensibly Brian is talking to Justin but really he is desperately trying to remind himself of this belief. He is already in love but he is also afraid of what that means.
I think Brian fell in love as early as 1x03 when Justin had the gall to steal two tricks from him. It was a like-recognizes-like moment. Brian for the very first time respected Justin and saw him as more than just some kid. In a scene at Woody’s in this ep Brian defends Justin to Michael and says “Leave him alone…he’s actually kind of sweet.” Justin’s move at the end of the ep was far from sweet and it not only turned Brian on, it had him head over heels. The way he smiles while kissing him on the dancefloor that night and holds him up in his arms like a trophy. I’m certain Brian took him home and couldn’t keep his hands off him the rest of the night.
For the rest of the season we see the tension between Brian’s love for Justin and Brian’s love for his lifestyle. Falling in love with someone is entirely discordant with Brian’s idea of himself and as we know he feels he can’t be trusted to love someone and have them love him in turn. He is terrified of that vulnerability and he doesn’t want to be hurt especially by someone he has allowed to get this close to him.
This follows them until season 5 when Brian finally allows himself to tell Justin that he loves him. He says it’s because of the bomb, but Brian already had to consider losing Justin once before, and instead of telling Justin that he loved him after the bashing he instead pretends that he didn’t even show up to the hospital despite visiting him every day and watching him sleep. Brian loved Justin from the beginning but he had so much work to do healing from his childhood and the walls he built up before he could even consider letting himself be vulnerable enough to admit it to Justin.
Finally, I just want to say that Justin is god’s strongest soldier. Was he perfect? No. Did he leave Brian and misunderstand him a few times? Yes. But jesus Brian did not make it easy on him. It takes a lot to love someone unconditionally even when they refuse to tell you what you both know is true.
Ok, stepping off my soapbox.
When I say I want more morally gray protagonists, this is what I'm talking about! This hits the spot, baby!
This never needed to be stated quite this explicitly in the original series, because a major part of Nate Ford's arc was his journey from embodying the white knight to proudly calling himself a thief, and the others all came from distinctly non-heroic lives of crime. They all knew what lines they've been skipping across.
But Breanna idolizes them. She grew up with stories of Leverage saving people, and now she's on a crusade to fix the world. So this needed to be said. And it needed to be said early on, so that she doesn't go in further with any illusions. They will never be the heroes who end up on pedestals, illuminated by spotlights. They're the ones in the muck and the shadows doing the dirty—but essential—work.
When the rules are made by people who care nothing for true justice, they need to be broken. The world needs heroes to stand in the frontline and change those rules, to overhaul the corrupt and cruel system. But that's long, arduous work that will take several generations to make headway, and in the meantime, people are dying. That's where Leverage steps in.
i genuinely dont care if the creation of all media comes to a screeching halt btw i will very gladly live with no new movies no new tv shows no new anything for years if that's what it takes for the people who create them to be treated like human beings. i hope every other facet of the entertainment industry goes on strike too and i hope all the ones that havent unionised yet will. i want media creation to become completely impossible and i want the people who could make it possible again to hold out until they get every single thing they want. btw
Chayanne only doing things when Philza asks him to reminded me of when Phil was in VidCon so Chayanne stopped cooking because he ‘missed his dad too much so he wasn’t in the mood’
It was probably just a different admin coming up with an excuse, but I love the idea of Chayanne secretly being the clingiest egg in the server but he’s so subtle about it his dad still thinks he’s chill & independent. What a papa’s boy.
Chayanne, externally: Hello, Sir! Ready to go back into the fields, sir!
Chayanne, internally: holy shit holy shit my dad is here my dad is here he’s here to spend time with me i love him i love him i love my dad he’s the best he’s the coolest in the world his name is philza minecraft is so brave he’s the bravest man I’ve ever met when I look at him I think daaamn he’s so brave
When Adam asked 'Who's your type, someone who read Borges?' and Kol replies 'I'd take Kafka.'
AAAAAAA
I laughed, I cried, I felt inexplicable heartbreak
“That’s the thing. I'm such a loser.” “Don't say that.” “No, it’s okay. I am. I am. ‘Cause for me... life froze to this... this one feeling. Sometimes... so many times, I think... I think... ‘Fuck. How lucky am I?’”
