You realise there’s a well backed up theory, which states if the lights go out now, the human race goes with it?

Basically, the industrial revolution and the last 300 years of technological progress has been driven using fossil fuel energy, mostly coal which used to be readily accessible near the surface. That supply is now exhausted, hence why we dig so deep.

The theory states that if there is a major war, economic collapse, natural disaster on a global scale, etc, and we do not have suitable renewable energy infrastructure in place for when the fossil fuel industry collapses, then we will never restart as an advanced species. Without surface coal and oil, we need a lot of power and heavy machinery (fossil fuel powered) to extract and refine these energy sources.

Simply put, while pursuit of renewable and green energy sources is an urgent priority, not only will that pursuit of new technology collapse if you “dismantle the fossil fuel industry”, but you’d be causing the end of the human race.

Renewable energy just isn’t anywhere near ready to replace fossil fuel.

I’m surprised hermit didn’t wedge “capitalism” in there somewhere.

Haven’t there been a lot of people and posts saying renewable energy is actually 100% ready to be added as a major source of energy and we don’t actually need fossil fuels except maybe for cars?

Yes. And IIRC, they’re all wrong. 

Find me a non-nuclear renewable which can operate independent of location. You can plop down a coal or oil plant wherever you need it and the ground will support a building. Solar, wind, hydro all require very specific environmental circumstances, which aren’t conducive to where people ACTUALLY live and consume energy.

Also, renewable energy sources can sometimes be more expensive to maintain and operate. Especially for the amount of electricity they output.

Oh no. It costs money? Better poison our air because it’s cheaper?

It’s physically not possible yet. Germany is the world leader in renewable. Their best case is 80% renewable by 2050. That means other first world nations are 20-50 years behind them. Third world nations 50-100+ years.

You cant legislate new technology into existence.

Thr best bet is keep funding research into a new battery type. That will solve all the problems and the free market will shift to it if it’s better and cheaper.
