To me, the most tragic element of Théodred’s sad story is how close he came to survival. When he was struck down by Saruman’s forces at the Isen, he had only the companies of Elfhelm and Grimbold to help him. But much greater aid was already on its way — Gandalf and the 3 hunters would soon arrive in Edoras. The healing of Théoden would release Éomer and the rest of the forces of Rohan to fully join the fray. Merry and Pip would help stir the ents into action. All of that miraculous help (unsummoned and unlooked for, as Tolkien was fond of saying) would come to fruition in less than a week if Théodred could have only held on that much longer.

He was born into tragedy, and he lived four full decades facing challenges and problems not of his own making. And then, when the solution to everything was finally just around the corner, he was denied the chance to see it. A lifetime of struggle, and he missed victory by a matter of mere DAYS. Just epically unfair.

Bernard Hill was a legend. He infused Theoden with so much warmth and strength. His kindness to Merry, his love for Eowyn, his grief for his son, his guilt over his failures of king, yet his aura of power, his commanding presence, and his undeniable might as a warrior, made Theoden a compelling and beautiful character.

do you ever wake up with the sudden intense urge to cast a random film as a muppet movie? hi, i’m tumblr user romanceyourdemons, and i’ve spent the past 45 min trying to muppetize hero (2002)

here’s the casting i have right now. for the human character, wang yibo as nameless. he’s got the star power, he’s got the violence-in-lieu-of-dialogue acting style well-prepared, and although i don’t have evidence for this i feel that he would be able to give a very solid deadpan performance across from the muppets. broken sword and flying snow would be kermit and miss piggy. this is easy money. for sky i would cast gonzo, the most likely person to disrupt kermit and miss piggy’s marital harmony with a poorly-timed affair, and for moon i would cast fozzie, the second-most likely person to do so. statler and waldorf would be that master scribe from zhao. the military forces of qin would all be humans. and finally, and this may be my most controversial casting choice, but, to emphasize his loftiness and to replicate the divide between hong kong and mainland stars that i read as very significant to the original, in the role of the king of qin i would cast big bird

and one more significant detail. in my vision all of the arrows are suction cup tipped. i want the attack on the calligraphy school and the last shot of the palace door replicated exactly, but with what are unmistakably completely fake arrows

when i say i like hiking, i don’t mean “eight mile backpacking trip with special gear and an emergency beacon” sort of hiking, i mean a three mile loop to go look at pretty things and then a huge brunch after.

this is in no way a slam on hardcore hiking, it’s very fun, but i mostly just need to lower people’s expectations when i say hiking is a hobby of mine
