Your beta readers can even highlight and react to the text!!!
There’s also this thing where you can search the website for available readers best suited for YOUR book!

@bengalisms

possibly an unpopular opinion, but while i have no problems with flowery text, if you went to the thesaurus feature in google to replace a word, and the one you’ve chosen is one you’ve never heard before, wouldn’t be able to pronounce, or you were deliberatly searching for as obscure a phrase as possible, personally then i don’t think thats the word you should be using in either a casual roleplay reply (narration or dialogue, doesn’t matter) and not even for a fic or a story of your own.

of course there are always exceptions to this, where perhaps the use of archaic language adds to the atmosphere of the piece, or by having a character speak in such a fashion conveys a trait or quality about them. or where you’re playing with the dynamics of the sentences, and the use of a lesser known phrase will keep in line with whatever something you're going for syntactically. like a rhyme scheme or iambic meter.

those are just my thoughts on the matter. there are ways to make your narrative voice sound sophisticated, aloof, ethereal or a little magical, etc., all without forcing your audience to open their dictionary apps several times every few pages. otherwise, you run the risk of even the most enthusiast of readers becoming too frustrated or even just plain lost

Starting Sentences with “I”

Anonymous asked: “Most of my sentences start with the word ‘I’ or a character’s name. It makes the writing feel monotonous, but I can’t seem to fix it or change my habits. Any tips?”

What is most likely the issue is that your scenes contain only action. “I do this” or “he does that.” That’s not so much of an issue, but once you include more exposition and especially since it’s first person, the thoughts and feelings of the main character, the issue will likely resolve itself.

Ways to Get Inspired to Write That Character

1. Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a collage of images, text, colors, or materials. that are used to “to evoke or project a particular style or concept”. Basically, it helps set the “mood” for whatever you are working on. Mood boards are often used by interior decorators and artists but can also be used for writing. I love creating mood boards for each of my characters. It helps me get a a feel for the character I am writing. For example, one of my characters is an elven swordswoman. For her mood board I used images of trees, flowers, decorative swords, and artwork of elves. It really helps when I’m trying to write from her perspective.

To create a mood board, simply find images or text that remind you of your OC. I use google images or even pinterest to find images. Its easy and fun.

2. Take Quizzes for Your Characters

Okay, this may seem a little silly but it totally works. Take a quiz from your characters point of view. Select the answers you think your character would select. I personally like doing this with personality quizzes such as the Myers Briggs tests because I can use the results as a foundation for my characters personality. It’s fun, effective, and actually productive.

3. Create Playlists

I listen to music a lot because it gets my creative juices flowing. So, if I find myself stuck on a particular character, I make a playlist of songs that remind me of that character. I actually like doing this before I start working on a character so I can listen to it while working on them. It sets the mood and gives you better results. Give it a try.

4. Study Some of Your Favorite Characters

Sit down, take out a notebook, and start taking notes on some of your favorite characters from literature, TV, or movies. What made you attracted to this character? What made you hate this character? What is your favorite thing about this character? Answering these questions will help see why you feel that way towards your favorite or least favorite fictional characters. Use your notes as a guideline on how to make readers either hate or love your OCs.

5. People Watch

Yeah, this sounds creepy but it is very effective. Go to the park, take a walk, or simply sit at the window and observe the people you see. Take notes on the little things that they do. Do they walk a certain way? Do they stand up straight or do they slouch? What quirks do they have? Do they drum their fingers while sitting? Do they tap their foot while waiting in line? Write down what you observe and you can apply the results to your characters. It will give your original characters a more realistic touch.

Feel free to add to this list!

How to get your muse back

Just about everyone in the RPC has been to the point where they have lost all inspiration and muse for their character and usually abandon ship or reboot in an attempt to get that flame back. I know I’ve been there on many, many, many occasions, but I feel that, as Rpers that immerse ourselves into the minds of characters, we forget what we’re actually doing: writing narratives in which our characters interact with others. We are authors, and the same way that media you consume can become bland, repetitious or soul crushingly boring, so can the act of rping. Muses end up in ruts, plots die and we lose sight of what makes a character a character. So at the risk of sounding like I know what I’m doing, I’m going to give a little helpful advise as the title states: how to get that flame back based off of my own experience as an rper.

At the risk of sounding like a drowned out writing professor, a lot of who aren’t in any actual literary field forget a very basic thing in our writing: character motivations. Sometimes we pick up muses just because they’re the #fave and or #problematic fave, make a blog, stay on it for a week to a month and then hop off. When creating a blog, or re-sparking a blog you already have, you only need to ask yourself three questions: What? Why? How?

What: what is my characters motivations? What do they want? Why: why does my character want that? Why is my character like this? How: How is my character going to get that? How are they being deterred?

Again, this is coming from someone who’s abandoned about a million blogs, has never taken a writing class outside of high-school and main motivations for this post is a four hour binge of a youtube media critic. Take everything with a grain of salt. Of course, you can use the simplified version three step program above and do what you will with it, but if you need a little extra help, I’ve got a word vomit.

I’ll be using two of my own Rp blogs in two various states of existence, a rival Barry from D/P/PLT @aspearbarry and a many-a-time rehashed portrayal of Grimsley from Black/White/2 @casaunova, for the purpose of this post.

Without further ado, here’s the line break

hllstrms-deactivated20181031

as stated here, because of the chaos going on, i cannot currently pay my phone bill & i’m worried because i’ve got a huge audition for a national tour of kinky boots coming up as well as waiting to hear from job interview and such. if i could wait until next week, i’d be fine but because of having to pay this technically yesterday, my phone is gonna get shut off at any moment. i am unsure as to why it’s not right now but i’m counting my blessings. i need to come up with $115 to keep my phone on. on top of that, my rent for my new place is due & while he’s been patient, i don’t want him to wait much longer. i am doing graphics such as dash icons, mobile headers, roleplay icons, and promos for those who donate anything with proof.

if you can do anything, here is my paypal, my cashapp, and my ko-fi. if you cannot, a reblog is just as valuable! thank you so much for your gratitude. ❤️
