Many know of the story of Baldr's death where Loki tricked Hoðr into slaying his brother. But, did you know that there is another account of Baldr's death? This story was taken by Saxo Grammaticus in the 1100's in his accounts titled, "Gesta Danorum" or, "Deeds of the Danes." Taking place in about 240 AD, Baldr and Hoðr are rival suitors for the daughter of Gewar, King of Norway, Nanna. In this story, King Hoðr and the demigod Baldr are at war and fighting for the hand of Nanna. They've met on the battlefield, and then in single-combat, but Baldr fails. Hoðr wins Nanna's hand, but Baldr doesn't accept this. Hoðr had a sword given to him by the valkyries, named Mistletoe, fated to be the demigod's demise.
