Mystique/Destiny Comprehensive Reading Order!
Hi! I know my brand is normally very Ruth Aldine centered but I’m also a very big fan of Destiny, especially when it comes to Mystique and Destiny’s relationship. Because of this, I decided it’d be fun to read through all of the stuff they are in together and make it into a reading order so that other people can enjoy their relationship as well. I curated a lot of the issues down to just the relevant ones, but if you want a list of everything they appeared in together you can find a full list I did here!

- New Mutants (1983): 29-34 [this is the shadow king arc. it is considered an important karma comic and is often referenced in future appearances, but the writing is quite fatphobic and for a story that is supposed to be about karma she is in it very little until the final issue so while I’ve included it as it’s referenced a lot I do have a hard time recommending it. ]

Vic’s Midpollo/The Authority Rec List
Core Content:
- Stormwatch Vol 2. (issues #4-6) contains Midnighter & Apollo’s origin story. It’s written by Warren Ellis, and anything written by him is guaranteed to be good. The team they’re part of is blatantly a satirical take on the Justice League and it’s hilarious. While these are the only issues that include Midnighter & Apollo, I definitely recommend Ellis’ entire Stormwatch run (Vol.1 #37-50 & Vol.2 #1-11)–it made me fall in love with Shen & Jenny Sparks more than I already was.
- The Authority Vol.1 (issues #1-12) was also written by Warren Ellis; this is truly one of my favourite comic books of all time. The character interactions, plot, and art are all fantastic. I started reading this run for Midnighter & Apollo, and by the end I had fallen in love with the entire team; they’re rough-edged and violent without being gratuitous, witty without being corny, and it was fun as hell to read through them slaughtering both interdimensional colonialists and also god. There is unfortunately a villain who is an Evil Chinese Stereotype in the first arc though.
- The Authority Vol.1 (issues #13 & #29) the first & last issue of The Authority written by Mark Millar. It sucks ass but these two issues explain Midnighter & Apollo’s adopted daughter (#13) and show them getting married (#29) which is the only reason I’m reccing them in the first place. It’s gratuitously violent without reason, and hurls slurs, homophobia, racism, sexism, and addiction at its readers for no reason other than shock value.
- The Authority Vol.2 (issues #0-9, #11-13) Issues 0-9 are an absolute blast, both the art style & tone were more in line with Ellis’ run than Milars, and we get a call-back to the first arc of The Authority Vol.1 which I thought was pretty cool. Issues 10-13 take place after a 4-issue mini-series (Coup d'État) that culminates in The Authority ousting the president of the US, which I didn’t read bc I had no desire to. Issue 10 is a direct follow-up to that arc, but it’s rarely mentioned throughout issues 11-13 which is why I kept them. There were definitely parts of Vol.2 that I wasn’t fond of, but the good far outweighs the bad in my opinion.
- The Authority: Revolution (issues #1-12) starts with The Authority dealing with the consequences of taking over the USA in Coup d'État, and it still made sense despite the fact I never read that arc. I was slow to get into it, but by the end I was flipping pages as fast as I could read them. The first few issues set up some interesting ideas and it follows through in knocking them down in a satisfying way. Their fight against the Big Bad felt a little too clean-cut in my opinion, but issue #11 has some amazingly angsty midpollo content.
- The Authority Vol.4 (issues #1-17) takes place after a crossover event spanning 3 mini-series between the biggest Wildstorm properties, but all you need to know is this: it’s the apocalypse. While Midnighter and Apollo are separated by circumstance, it makes the issues where they appear together all the more impactful in my opinion. The original Authority run by Ellis will always be my favourite, but this run is definitely second place. The series wraps up nicely on a beautiful and hopeful note, and while there were still a few loose threads, this is definitely one of the better comic series ends I’ve read.
One-Shots & Miniseries:
- Planetary/The Authority: Ruling the World is a one-shot crossover event. It’s a pretty fun read, minus the fact that H.P. Lovecraft makes an appearance.
- Wildstorm Winter Special 2005: Two Dangerous Ideas is a funny little one-shot where Midnighter and Apollo meet their alternate-reality counterparts: Daylighter and Pluto. Hilarity ensues.
- The Authority: Human on the Inside (miniseries) the plot makes no damn sense but Midnighter & Apollo have some really cute interactions in this and the art is soooo pretty.
- Lobo/The Authority: Jingle Hell the art is an… interesting choice and the writing is a rude, crude riot. I found this in my local comic shop’s dollar bin and while it definitely belongs there, I do not regret buying it.
For the love of all that is good and gay please do not read Stormwatch Vol.3 it was part of the New 52 relaunch and reading it caused me psychic damage.
And feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions!
Queer Characters of Marvel Reading Guide #5: Akihiro | Dark Wolverine | Daken
OK. For my more sensitive folks, let me start this one out with a CONTENT WARNING. Daken is not for the faint of heart. A lot of his relationships, including the queer ones, could be interpreted as toxic. So if you're not into heavy stories full of violence, child abuse, hurt/comfort, and maladaptive coping mechanisms, skip this one. There is also implied sexual abuse of a child. So, please take care of yourselves around your content no-nos.
THAT SAID. I absolutely LOVED every SECOND of Daken's guide. From start to finish it took me 2 weeks to read about 300 comics for him and holy shit he is worth it.
Daken or Akihiro, both names he's called interchangeably at this point, is the biological son of Logan (Wolverine) and Itsu. His mother was murdered by the Winter Soldier (while he was under mind control) and he was then taken out of his mother by Romulus, the "father figure" (gross gross gross) Daken would have for the next several decades of his life.
Of all the guides I've done. I think Daken is BY far my favourite. I immediately loved him. From the second he steps on the page until the very last comic I've read for him. He is everything to me. (With the exception of Leah Williams's run in X-Factor, but whatever, i still love him).
Okay, I'm gonna stop singing my meow meow's (who has committed multiple atrocities) praises and get into What Y'all Should Read (so you can love him as much as I do).

i can tell i’m sleep deprived bc i just made myself cry about tutankhamun and i have, like, negative interest in the kid
have now made the rest of the discord cry about this little boy who had multi-coloured ducks sewn onto a tunic that he loved so much he wore it to a Very Important Event because he was EIGHT and have you SEEN my DUCKS
sorry no i’m not done i’m gonna make you all cry some more i’m bringing you down with me
there was once a little boy.
he is born disabled. his body hurts, and he can’t walk properly the way the other children do. he doesn’t understand why. he’s a little boy. but he plays with wooden boats and pulls toys on a string.
somebody makes him a tunic. they sew ducks onto it in red and green and yellow and blue. the bright colours of a child.
the little boy is eight years old, and he’s going to be king now. there’s a big ceremony about it. he doesn’t really fully understand what’s going on, because he’s eight, but he wears the tunic with the brightly coloured ducks for the occasion because he loves it. look at his ducks! aren’t they great?
he is a child. the adults around him manipulate and coax him to gain more power for themselves. he still plays with toys.
as a teenager, not yet an adult, he fathers children. they do not survive. he’s not even old enough to have full agency in his job and is still being manipulated, but he had babies and they died.
he does not make it to his twenties. at eighteen or nineteen years old he dies, and is buried. his babies, so tiny, are buried with him.
and so is his tunic with the little ducks that he loved so much he kept it long after it no longer fit.
there was once a little boy.
yeah i think that like. especially with historical figures in your mind people who were kings and queens or important nobles were adults. even if you know how old they were it doesn’t really click. it doesn’t seem real
but then you get something like a little tunic with brightly coloured ducks on it and it hits you like a fucking truck that this really was a little kid and no matter how far removed you are a little kid is still a little kid. their brains didn’t develop any quicker back then. he was just as developed/mature mentally as any 8 year old now. he had cartoonish animals on his clothes and he played with toy boats and probably terrorised the local cat population.
tutankhamun was a child and he didn’t make it to adulthood because he was unfortunate enough to be a very important child
his dad died when he was 8. he saw his own babies die when he was still just a boy himself.
but he had brightly coloured little ducks on his favourite shirt, and he kept it.
and he did not just keep the duckie shirt either
tutankhamun had a little pair of sandals with ducks on them. he had earrings decorated with ducks. he kept those, and other items of childhood clothing. some toys. keepsakes. things he loved, and treasured. he kept them all in a little wooden chest. the chest… was carved with ducks.
and that little duck chest, filled with things he kept from his childhood, was buried with him. maybe he was keeping them for the little babies who did not make it. maybe they just reminded him of good days and fun times.
but he was a little boy who thought ducks were just the best
WITH PLEASURE
(greyscale makes it hard but the duck head is on the right above the toe strap. always takes me a while to find it too)
I kinda want luther and five to find out there twins in season 3, like in the comics, because that one scene would just be so chaotic like it would be five realizing he is biologically related to this dumbass and screaming in the distance while luther tries to connects the dots all while looking like a confused 3 year old (I love him so much). The entire time the rest of the hargreeves siblings are like standing there awkwardly while klaus makes fun of them.
Or we get to see this alternate reality where luther and five grew up together and are somehow functioning adults and look like normal 30 year olds and it gets super angsty where they discover what could have been if they weren't adopted and it's really sad, cause they would have real names and maybe family's.
Either way I can't wait for season three and nothing will stop me from theorizing.
Some more star wars headcanons cause I was, again, bored.
- Padme and Beru were pen pals after they met in AOTC. Beru was the first person to figure out that Padme and Anakin were married, and Padme was so glad. She found the younger girl calm and easy to talk to, and alot of fun (you can only gossip with droids to a point about your secret marrige to your jedi protector.)
- Luke can and will sleep anywhere. He has a special talent for curling up in the oddest places and instantly falling asleep (he is the only one in both his biological and adopted family to have this power). It wasn't an odd occurance to find him huddled in his x-wing fast asleep or in his bathtub just nodding off, or even in some tiny cupboard in the middle of nowhere because eithe base became to loud.
- Bail was the only one who did leias hair. He had a particular talent for it, most likely due to his older sisters. Leia didn't expect Breha or Sabè doing it, because she knows they will mess it up (years later, long after Bail Organa had taken one last look at the sky to see an out of place moon, Luke became the only one who could do Leias hair right.)
- Han had an older sister. He doesn't remember her at all, only small vague memories here and there, but he finds comfort in them. (He doesn't remember her dying, and he feels he would remember that, so he holds on hope.)
- Luke loves painting. And he is good at it. Often he just paints random objects, some fruit or eyes, an odd extra realistic x-wing. But sometimes, he draws these incredible masterpieces of vivid battles and brutal space fights. Mothma herself has said that some of them seem familiar to her. The oddest thing about them is that all the faces of the people, are completely blurred out. (Luke's favorite was one of an orange skin togruta and a dark blonde haired man fighting some unknown enemies but he lost it when they had to quickly evacuate the base.)
- Ahsoka found a painting while exploring an abandoned rebel base. She clearly remembered the battle depicted in it, in fact she remembered the exact words that
VaderAnakin was saying in the captured moment. She doesn't know how it came to be, but she is desperate to find who ever created it. (There is a small name scrawled in the corner, so messy she immediately thought of her old master) - Vader also found one of these mysterious paintings (that were not that mysterious) of a young brunette holding a fair haired child and another small bundle. He believes it was created to mock him, so he destroyed it. (He never even considered the idea that the bundle was another baby.)
Original Trilogy headcannons cause I was bored.
- Luke is the only one that can cook out of the falcon crew. Leia grew up with royal servants and Han was used to stealing meals with chewie, but luke grew up with his aunt Beru. Both her and Owen taught luke how to cook from a young age and even introduced him to holotube cooking shows.
- Leia loves cuddles. But only a few people know. When she cuddles with Luke she complains about people she doesn't like and rants to him (he is a good listener), with Han she falls asleep (he feels safe) and with chewie she grieves (he is very supportive and very fluffy.)
- Han has a soft spot for Luke. That's common knowledge. But it goes to the extent where he makes sure Luke is eating, always knows what mission he is on and only stays at the alliance for him (in the first year, then it becomes a combination of Luke and Leia. He also generally enjoys helping people.)
- Piett is the only one Darth Vader has never considered killing. He can read the sith lords moods, does whatever he says without complaints and is a capable captain. (He is also not truly afraid of vader. Or so vader
hopesthinks.) - Palpatine keeps some real creepy files on Leia Organa. He has some well supported theories as to how she came to be, but he is never certain. (After he died Mara Jade found the files and burnt them. She has a decent amount of respect for the princess and was starting to realise that palpatine was cruel to her)
- When Darth Vader went to the Lars farm after finding out about Luke, he found a holo of when the boy was around 5 years old and talking to his aunt about a toy speeder. He keeps it on his belt and, though he never admits it, takes it out when he fails to capture skywalker or after a particularly bad talk with the emperor, to feel better and remember his son is alive.
- Mothma thinks back to Bail and Padme alot. That is how she figured out the Luke was Padme's son. She figured out the Leia connection a bit later, but with Luke, she sends him on missions that might need a secretly diplomatic and kind response. The missions always succeed.
- Bail Organa desperately wanted both the twins, but he is content with Leia. He keeps holos of Luke though, from Beru, so one day he can tell his princess all about her family (not vader) and how happy she makes him. (He was going to do it when he decided to send for obi wan in Rogue One, but had to return to his planet and send Leia alone)
This is the Baby Money Yoda, reblog in the next 60 seconds of seeing this to receive a blessing from our green bean prince.
Rey's "Spotlight"
This post is not me saying I don't like Rey. As a girl I thought it was fantastic to have a female lead in a star wars movie, and loved her in TFA. This post is about how I just noticed that she was given a spotlight as this strong female lead, at the expense at all the other female characters which I adored, and how she was basically given everything else that made certain star wars characters unique. Also there is a tip at the end.
Did anybody else notice it. How all the other female characters were either killed off or basically erased in TROS? How strong, interesting characters like Rose and Leia and even Ahsoka were cast aside (Padme and Shmi weren't fucking mentioned once), while the other new characters were used as plot devices to either stop people shipping a certain (cough *stormpilot* cough) ship together or used way to late to have an impact on the film. (Seriouy, now that Jannah is confirmed to be Lando's daughter, it is so shitty to have her not appear in any of the other films or have that fact mentioned in Tros.)
Did anyone see how Rey was turned into this all powerful being who was given everything from all the other star wars characters so she could be some messiah (Anakins lightsaber which was literally renamed as hers, Luke's characteristics and shocking backstory twist, plus his x-wing and his and vaders win against palpatine, the skywalker name and their entire legacy even though Leia was an Organa through and through and Luke didn't even seem to like her?)
I just thought it was real shitty that we lost all these interesting, strong and independent female characters like Ahsoka and Leia so Rey could get some inspiration, we had the first Asian main character (and she was a women!), yet she was turned into a side character and after everything that the first six star wars movies created, it was all destroyed and made meaningless just so J.J.Abrams could call himself some weird feminist god send.
.
(Don't even fricking get me started on the lesbian kiss scene. Honestly, as a gay person who so desperately wanted representation on the big screen in a big movie, it would have been better if we had nothing. That way, it would not have been a token gay kiss that was so hard to catch that it could easily be removed for countries who didn't want to see it)
(And also, something which would be an entirely different post, would be the way tros treated Finn and Poe. All I am saying is that John Boyega and Oscar Isaac had every right to be pissed or dissatisfied with lucasfilms and disney)
So in conclusion: Padme and Shmi weren't metioned at all, even though they are such important skywalkers, Ahsoka was kill off for one single line, Rose was erased for some stupid reason, Leia (plus Luke and Han) were killed off to make Rey and Kylo Ren shine and Anakin and his legacy were meaningless.
Here is the Tip: if you don't like how the sequel trilogy turned out, you were sick of your fav characters being treated like shit or you are perhaps a Legends fan, just think of the sequels as something that could have happend after rotj. Like, disneys fanfiction. That way, you can keep your favs canon and the prequels and original trilogy actually mean something!
Also, how could I forget, the entire EU was erased as well. Incredible complex characters like jaina solo and Mara Jade were all lost for what ever the hell that reylo kiss was at the end of TROS!
