Let’s talk tech witchcraft, fam.

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of posts talking about digital or tech-y witchcraft, but, unfortunately, so many witches tend to ignore these posts (myself included!). I don’t know exactly why this happens. Maybe it’s because it just doesn’t feel *witchy* enough, or because many apps and programs that could be used for witchcraft cost money (and there’s no way in hell I’m paying 99 cents for a damn candle app!). Here me out though, cause I’m gonna give some tips on how to actually use the internet and particularly apps to help you out in your day-to-day witchery! Let’s get started.

First things first, let’s talk candles. Fancy, real-life candles can be too expensive for a lot of witches, but many witches turn away from candle apps for a number of reasons. I think the most common reason is because of ads on candle apps. Nothing breaks the mood of a spell like seeing Kate Upton pop up on screen to badger you about some clash of clans knock off. This can be fixed, though! Don’t pay the extra dollar to get rid of ads on the candle app. Instead, simply turn on airplane mode while using the app. Ads won’t be able to come through while your phone is on airplane mode. Here’s a link to a free candle app for iphone (I’ll add in an android link later). It has candles in yellow, purple, orange, white, red, green, and brown, and you can buy extension packs for modern, gothic or holiday candles if you wish (Though you probably won’t really need them tbh)

Next up, let’s talk divination. Wanting to buy a tarot deck, but it’s just too expensive for your budget? Can’t find a set of runes anywhere? Have no fear, for there’s an app for that! Here’s a list of divination apps for the iphone (I’m sorry witchys, I don’t have an android available. I’ll try to find some links later. Let me know if you have any!!)

If you’re not a smartphone app type of person, you can use a website like this one or this one for tarot. This one or this one for runes. This one or this one to make a natal chart for astrology.

Now, for the grand finale, I want to move away from apps (*applause from all android users*) and talk a little about some stuff you can do with your computer. I’m not going to go into detail about any of this, because I think it can spark some awesome creativity into your personal practice. First of all, digital grimoire/book of shadows. You can make a folder on Word, or you can use a digital journal of some sort. If you use Google Chrome, I suggest the Journal by Journey, but there are tons of other awesome (and even free!) programs that you can use. Second of all, digital altar or shrine. You can use a folder full of pictures to represent items/tools/etc., or, if you’re into making things artsy and pretty, you can check out a website like Polyvore.

I hope you found this helpful! Tbh, I was always very off-put by tech-y witchcraft. I was always kind of a “I must have a super pretty leather-bound grimoire and real candles and real tarot decks, not that digital crap” type of person…but now, I really am starting to see the practical use of technology in witchcraft. It’s really helpful AND it doesn’t break the bank! Double win! Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to leave me an ask. Please let me know if any of the links do not work, and if you have any links for android apps that I can add in, please let me know! Thanks for reading,

Last Minute Sabbats: Lammas

image

Hello everyone! I began this little series with Litha back in June, so it’s now time to continue my last minute sabbats series! As always, before we get started, I just want to note that not all Pagans celebrate the Sabbats, and not all witches celebrate the Sabbats either. I by no means am telling anyone that they need to celebrate the sabbats to have a full or valid practice. If you do celebrate the sabbats, however, here is some information about Lammas, including a prayer that I wrote in honor of the Sabbat and a little summary of my personal Lammas plans:

Lammas

When: August 1st (The beginning of the harvest)

Other names: Lughnasadh, Lugh’s day

What: Lammas is the celebration of the beginning of the harvest. It is also a day devoted to honoring the Celtic craftsman god, Lugh. Most modern celebrators use this day to either honor the harvest and give thanks for the summer’s bounty or to give thanks to and honor Lugh. Some celebrators may do both.

Colors: Brown, bronze, gold, red, orange

God/desses: Lugh is particularly associated with Lammas. Persephone, Demeter, and any grain/harvest/agriculture deities are also associated with Lammas.

Herbs/plants: Heather, goldenrod, sunflower, Queen Anne’s lace, basil, aloe, hollyhock, any grains, acacia, corn

Gems/crystals/stones: Carnelian, amber, citrine, tiger’s eye, peridot

Ideas for celebration: Cooking (especially with things that you have personally grown, or vegetables and fruits of the season), performing a sacrifice with bread or food of some sort, offerings to Lugh or a harvest deity from your chosen pantheon, giving thanks, games/activities/sports, making corn dolls or onion braids

My Lammas Prayer:

Deities of harvest and agriculture, many named– Lugh, Demeter, Renenutet, Heqet, Ceres, Freyr – thank you for the bountiful summer and all of the blessings that it has brought to my life. As we enter this new season of harvest, may those who are in need find the tools to bring them nourishment, substance, and happiness. May the fields bring forth food to feed those in hunger. May the rain bring water for those in thirst. May the changing season bring forth comfort, security, safety, and hope for those who find themselves in places of fear or sadness or pain. Thank you for your many blessings, and may the bounty of the summer lead into an even more bountiful harvest. So mote it be.

My Lammas Plans:

Unfortunately, I just got back from a week of camp and was unable to write up a ritual or make any plans for Lammas. I think I’ll probably just have a nice relaxing day and spend some time with my family. Perhaps I’ll cook a little bit and meditate on the harvest :)

I hope you have a happy Lammas and that you found this post helpful! Look out for more last minute sabbat posts in the future :) If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask! To see the previous last minute sabbat post on Litha, click here.

20 DAYS OF BACK TO SCHOOL SIGILS!

Hello everyone! So you may or may not have heard about the “20 days of back to school witchcraft challenge” created by snwitch If you haven’t heard of it is a challenge that involved spell writing and performing spells, sigils, glamours and all kinds of magic. I am a newer witch and I do not feel prepared to write or preform spells and glamours yet. So far I have been focusing on sigil writing and using sigils. I’m sure there are other new witchlings who are not prepared for spell casting or who don’t want to use so much energy as school is very energy draining for some people. Or maybe there are some witches who focus mainly on sigils. So I decided to create a 20 days of back to school sigils! This challenge will focus on sigil writing and using sigils! Inspired and based off of “20 days of back to school witchcraft challenge” by snwitch ( http://snwitch.tumblr.com/post/125870684214/20-days-of-back-to-school-magic-challenge ) Any witch who wants to improve sigil writing should participate in this challenge! (The sentences I write out are only suggestions and are there to help you get the idea. Feel free to use them to create your sigil or to create your own sentence.) Day 1: Write a calming sigil. Something like “I am calm and can control my stress levels.” (going back to school can be stressful!) Day 2: Draw a sigil on your planner/journal/calendar/etc to help keep you organized, something like “I am able to stay organized.” Day 3: Write a sigil for restful sleep and draw it on your pillow or bed or keep it by your bed. Something like “I will go to sleep by…” Or “I will get … hours of sleep every night.” (To help get your sleep schedule back on track for school) Day 4: Make a sigil for your backpack or pencil box/case/bag to keep you from losing your supplies. Something like “I will not lose my supplies.” Day 5: Write a motivation sigil to motivate you to study and do your homework. Something like “I will do my homework without procrastinating.” Day 6: Make a sigil to attract new friends as you go back to school. Something like “I will attract new friends in school.” Day 7: Write a sigil to increase your memory and put it on your binder/notebook. Something like “I have a very good memory and can remember important information.” Day 8: Put some sigils on/near your mirror for self-love. Something like “I love myself and my body.” (school can sometimes take a toll on your self esteem) Day 9: Draw a sigil on you timetable to help you remember your classes and where they are. Something like “I can remember what class I have next and where it is located.” Day 10: Draw a sigil and keep it on you to increase/decrease your chances of getting called on in class. Something like “I will get called on more/less in class.” (depending on if you like to be called on or not) Day 11: Make a sigil for your water bottle to help you remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Something like “I will remember to stay hydrated throughout the day.” Day 12: Write a sigil for an extra boost of luck on your tests/quizzes/exams. Something like “I will do well on my tests/quizzes/exams.” Day 13: Draw a sigil to draw/put in your locker to protect you from bullies. Something like “I am protected from bullies, they cannot hurt me.” Day 14: Create a sigil that will give you the bravery to ask for help when you are confused. Something like “I will be brave enough to to ask for help when I don’t understand.” Day 15: Make a sigil to help you avoid drama. Something like “I am able to avoid drama.” Day 16: Create a sigil to help you with a problem your having that is distracting you from school. Something like “I will get along with my brother.” Day 17: Draw a sigil for happiness, good luck, self-love or something else and give it to a friend/draw it on them. Day 18: Make a sigil to keep you from missing much when you have to take a sick day. Something like “I will not miss anything important at school when I’m at home on a sick day.” Day 19: Draw a sigil somewhere in your study space to make your study sessions more efficient. Something like “I can study efficiently.” Day 20: Draw a sigil on your brush to ward off bad hair days, or whatever days you would like to avoid. Something like “I will not have bad hair days.” Have fun! Make sure to tag your posts with #BackToSchoolSigils and #BackToSchoolWitchcraft if you would like to share :) - witchysigils

Last Minute Sabbats: Mabon

If you do celebrate the sabbats, however, here is some information about Mabon, including a prayer that I wrote in honor of the Sabbat and a little summary of my personal Mabon plans:

Mabon

When: Around September 21st (fall equinox)

Other names: Autumn/fall equinox

What: Mabon is the celebration of the Fall Equinox and the second harvest. Falling near American Thanksgiving, it is also seen as a time to give thanks for the bounties of the first harvest. For many Wiccans and Pagans who follow the Hellenic pantheon, this is seen as the time when Persephone leaves Demeter to descend to the Underworld with Hades.

Colors: Brown, gold, bronze, darker reds/oranges/purples

God/desses: Persephone, Demeter, Hades, Pomona, Morrigan, Freyr, Thor, Innana (not sure if Innana is from a closed culture or not? can someone please verify?)

Herbs/plants: Pomegranates, apples, acorns, grains, pinecones, corn, squash, pumpkins, sage, rose, seeds

Gems/crystals/stones: Yellow agate, amethyst, amber, citrine, yellow topaz, sapphire

Ideas for celebration: Big feasts or meals with family and friends are great for Mabon. Celebrations of balance or thanksgiving, nature walks/meditation, giving food or help to animals or people in need. Apple-picking, gardening, cooking.

My Mabon Prayer:

Oh many deities of the autumn equinox, who have been known as Persephone, Demeter, Hades, Pomona, Morrigan, Freyr, Thor– I offer you this prayer of thanks, lifting up my heart in gratitude for your many blessings. Thank you for the harvest, which brings food to those who are hungry. Your rains purify me. Your bounty nourishes me. Your skies surround me and watch over me in times of fear. For these blessings, I thank you. In this Mabon season, please bless those who are less fortunate than I. Bless the fallen animals, who have died that I may eat– I thank them for their beauty, strength, and sacrifice. To the animals who are hungry, forgotten, or abused by their owners– send your loving protection that they may be blessed and lead to safety. Bless all of the people who will spend this Mabon season hungry or cold– lead them also to safety and splendor. In your name, I pray that those who are less fortunate may be blessed and protected on this day. With much gratefulness, so mote it be.

My Mabon Plans:

I will not be celebrating Mabon this year, in all truthfulness. I’m recently having troubles with my faith and am looking into various religions. I don’t think that it’s fitting for me to celebrate Mabon when I don’t feel solid with my faith. I’ll still be continuing this series, nonetheless, since I know that it is very informational for some people.

I hope you have a happy Mabon and that you found this post helpful! Look out for more last minute sabbat posts in the future :) If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask! To see the previous last minute sabbat post on Lammas, click here.

Last Minute Sabbats: Samhain

Hello everyone! I began this little series with Litha back in June, so it’s now time to continue my last minute sabbats series! As always, before we get started, I just want to note that not all Pagans celebrate the Sabbats, and not all witches celebrate the Sabbats either. I by no means am telling anyone that they need to celebrate the sabbats to have a full or valid practice. If you do celebrate the sabbats, however, here is some information about Samhain, including a prayer that I wrote in honor of the Sabbat:

Samhain

When: October 31st

Other names: Halloween, All Hallows Eve, Hallowmas

What: Samhain marks the last harvest and, for some observers, a spiritual “new year.” It is often seen as a time to honor the dead and/or the cycle of death and rebirth.

Colors: Black, red, orange, brown, purple, grey

God/desses: Hekate, The Morrighan, Persephone, Hades, Osiris, Freyja, Anubis, any death/underworld gods or “crone” goddesses

Herbs/plants: Apples, pumpkins, vegetables & fruits of the season, heather, mandrake, thistle, pomegranate, grain, allspice, wormwood, sage, clove, cinnamon

Gems/crystals/stones: Obsidian, onyx, jet, garnet, amethyst, bloodstone, smoky quartz, ruby, hematite

Ideas for celebration: Divination, spiritwork, dumb suppers, graveyard visits (be respectful!!!!), Halloween-y activities (pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating etc.), honoring ancestors or deceased relatives, honoring animals, meditation

A Samhain Prayer:

To the guardians of death, I pray– Hades, Persephone, Anubis, Freyja, and all others– please bring peace to those who have passed. On this night, ease their sufferings and allow them safe passage, that they may finally be at peace. To our ancestors and deceased loved ones, be kind and allow them gentle rest from earthly life. And finally, bring honor to the animals who have died that I may eat, for I look to their strength with respect and honor. I ask that you hold these departed souls in your caring arms and guide them to safety and rest. Thank you for your kindness, and, when my time comes, I shall go willingly to your arms and sleep in your eternal strength.

I hope you have a happy Samhain and that you found this post helpful! Look out for more last minute sabbat posts in the future :) If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask! To see the previous last minute sabbat post on Mabon, click here.

Energy Work Masterpost

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a stickler for energy work. In my personal experience, energy work is the single most important thing that a witch can practice. It brings so much to the table, both in practical everyday matters and in witchy stuff! Here is my complete masterpost of all of the posts from my energy work series:

Offerings for the Dead

Most people are reblogging an ask I answered long ago about offerings to give to the dead. It’s long overdue, but I’ve finally typed it up into an actual cohesive post.

~ Herbs ~

  • Lavender, for peace in passing on
  • Thyme, to give peace to those who have died from violence
  • Apple, a common Irish symbol for the dead, which I often give to my ancestors
  • Pomegranates, myth of Persephone and all that
  • Rosemary, for remembrance
  • Myrrh, commonly used in necromancy, also used to give off good vibes
  • Chervil, often used in rituals for the dead
  • Mugwort, usually used to aid divination and communication with the dead. I also give it as an offering
  • Bay, same as mugwort (my mentality is that these herbs will help “send” the offerings to the dead)
  • Lemonbalm, for peace and healing
  • Wormwood, to strengthen the communication with the dead, as well as healing and revenge
  • Frankincense, a traditional herb (usually incense) to honor the dead

~ Flowers ~

  • Calendula, for blessings and eternal love
  • Rose petals (or the flower) for love and healing
  • Marigolds, perfect for ancestor worship (as well as spirit work salves and tea)
  • Lilies, for a sense of security and togetherness; ideal for children
  • Orchids, for balanced emotions and adoration; ideal for former lovers
  • Daisies, also ideal for former lovers and lost family members
  • Tulips, to spread happiness
  • Dandelions, ideal for connecting with certain spirits (especially when drunk as a tea)

~ Liquids ~

  • Water, a traditional offering for the dead, often left out for passing spirits
  • Wine or other alcohol
  • Juice, namely pomegranate or beet
  • Oils, such as olive oil, pomegranate oil, coconut, almond, vinegar

~ Other ~

  • Stones or crystals
  • Coins
  • Tobacco (I also know some people who use cigarette smoke or ashes)
  • Grains, traditionally brown bread
  • Meat
  • Candles, namely dark colored or earth-toned
  • Cleaning up graveyards, placing offerings on graves and speaking to them also makes a great offering
  • Song and music
  • Anything personal to the person you’re sending the offering to

~ What to do with the Offerings ~

  • Burn herbs or flowers (safely) with a written message to “send” the offering to the soul
  • Leave coins, flowers or herbs on the grave
  • Pour liquid into the earth, or leave them out in a bowl
  • Leave offerings out as a “standing offering” for the dead who pass through (idea from @arachnospooky)

This is SO overdue I’m so sorry but I hope it helps!!

After many requests, I’ve made a rebloggable version of my ‘Weather Magic’ page. Here you will find heaps of resources to help you with weather/storm craft. If you’ve read some of my previous posts about weather magic you will notice some similarities - that is because this is a collection of every weather witching post that I’ve ever posted compiled into handy resources post.

Weather Magic

The term “weather magic” or “weather witching” has been used to mean anything from divination and forecasting of weather to actual control and manipulation of the weather itself. From calling up treacherous storms to destroy another’s crops or providing fair winds for those at sea, witches (and even those who do not consider themselves to be such) have always been involved with weather magic. When you consider that most forms of magic are based around an agricultural past, the ability to affect and predict the weather was considered an invaluable skill. After all, if your family’s livelihood depended on the success of your crops (or the ability to find water as it did in my family’s case), weather magic would be an extremely handy thing to know.

Why the url Storm Born Witch?

I am quite fortunate, as the gift for weather related magic comes easily to my family. For generations, the men in my family have been dowsers or water diviners. However, it wasn’t until after I displayed an aptitude to weather related magic that I was told about my family’s history with it. My grandfather was the last water diviner in the family and he died when I was very young so I was never taught how to divine for water. My grandmother was the one to teach me what little she knew about weather magic - the rest either occurred naturally or I picked up along the way.

Calling Up A Wind - Whistling Up A Wind

This is the most common form of weather magic and has been practiced for hundreds of years. Depending on the pitch and tone of the whistle a witch can create a gentle breeze or a sharp gust of wind. Traditionally, if the skill of whistling up a wind does not come naturally to you the option of making a ‘wind whistle’ out of willow or alder wood is available.

Here in Australia, whistling up a wind is probably the most common form of magic I do. I honestly do not go a day without whistling up a cool breeze. It’s bloody hot here and sometimes a cool breeze is just what you need.

Resources for Calling Winds:

Storm Casting

Storm casting is the art of creating storms. There are many different methods to creating storms and bringing rain. The method used by my family is to fill a jug with water and while sitting outside (or facing a window) pour the water into a basin or bowl. Dip the tip of your pointer finger into the water and slowly make five clockwise circles in the water (if you have a pendant necklace this can be used instead - just above the water in the bowl). As you are making the circles call the wind to bring in a storm by blowing (or whistling a continuous low note - the sound of wind over the mouth of a glass bottle) over the water in the basin.

Resources for Storm Casting

Ways to Stop a Storm (Dispersing, Binding & Preventing)

There are multiple ways to stop a storm. The most common are dispersing or binding storms. However there are also ways to prevent storms from coming by directing them away from where you are. This is great if you’re holding an event outside and you need good weather.

Dispersing

This method involves spreading the storm out over a large area thereby minimising its effects. You can disperse a storm by calling winds to blow it away (or in a certain direction) or if you favour using weather maps you can draw the low pressure system moving away and gradually dissipating.

Binding (Storm Catching)

This method is also called ‘storm catching’ and involves catching a storm and binding it within an object (usually a bottle or knots) so it can be released gradually at a later date by pulling out the cork or undoing the braid/knots.

Resources for Binding Storms

Storm catching or “reeling in a storm” is even more difficult than storm casting so it’s always wise to think before you cast. Too much energy put into a storm and it will go on for weeks (and cause some flooding - basement incident) or it will be extremely violent and knock down power lines and tree branches. Too little energy and all you will get is a 5 minute shower of rain.

Preventing a Storm (Weather Maps)

However, if you wish to prevent a storm from forming, you’re going to have to pull out the weather maps. To make a weather map all you need to do is to print out a map of your local area or the area you’re trying to keep a storm away from.

Just use google maps and don’t make the area too big or you might seriously strain yourself magically. Then laminate the map - now you have your own ‘whiteboard’ to draw weather symbols on to generate certain types of localised weather.

To practice this kind of magic you really do need to know how weather systems work and how they’re likely to move; knowing a little bit about meteorology goes a long way.

Once you’re ready, find out what the weather is predicted to be and draw it on your map. Now draw the high/low pressure systems moving so that the area you’re trying to protect doesn’t get rain. This method can also be used to bring rain to a certain area.

Making Your Room Magical

Hi everyone! So, I’ve mentioned before that there are a million different ways to incorporate magic into your every day life. I think that making magic part of your everyday routine is important, but you can also add a magical boost to your bedroom! Here are some ideas for making your room magical. Enjoy!

The Bed:

  • Draw sigils on the bed frame (maybe underneath the bed so that it’s out of sight) for good sleep or to ward off nightmares (or to add a little extra spice for when you bring guys from the bar home…I don’t judge.)
  • Or you could stitch sigils into your pillow case or sheets instead.
  • When you lay down to go to sleep, create a big energetic shield around your bed to protect you while you sleep

The Windows:

  • Enchant your curtains/shutters/blinds to keep out prying eyes
  • Place tarot cards, crystals, and other tools on the window sill to let them charge with the power of the moon/sun.
  • Open up the windows every once in a while to release all of the excess and negative energy out of your room and into the air.

The Carpet:

  • Make cleansing “floor washes” for your carpet by making a powder with herbs and baking soda. Sprinkle it over the carpet and vacuum to remove. If you have wood floors in your room, you can make a liquid floor wash instead.

The Shelves, Side Tables, etc.

  • Create a small altar on top of a shelf, side table, or other surface in your room. It can be to honor the deities that you worship, or it can be for something else like drawing in prosperity or good fortune.
  • Dedicate shelves to different purposes by anointing them with different magical oils.

The Walls:

  • Magically program the walls with protective energy, like a giant shield around the entire room
  • Enchant posters or paintings of people/celebrities/etc to watch over the room or give the room a certain desired vibe.
  • Create a “vision board” with pictures of things that you would like to have in the future (vacation destinations, dream jobs/houses, etc). Every time you look at it, send some energy into it. Over time, the build up of energy will help draw those things to you.

The Closet:

  • Write down things that you would like to keep secret from the world or things that you would like people to not notice. Hide the pieces of paper in the closet to hide them from the world like “skeletons in the closet”.
  • Charge your favorite clothes to help bring confidence, motivation etc. to you when you wear them.

These are just some ideas that you can play around with to keep magic alive in your everyday life :) If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask. Thanks for reading,
