Every time I see some moral panic article about how some alarming % of teens admit to vaping or smoking or doing drugs or whatever, I think about that time in 9th grade when school handed us a survey on substance use, told us we had to fill it out, and me and a half dozen friends reported that we’d been habitual users of heroin, cocaine, and acid since the age of 9.
“Mischievous Responder Bias” is a known problem in surveying youth but it’s annoying and expensive to overcome it so often people don’t….also the things that come up when people try to look for it are hilarious, like 99% of the kids who reported having a missing limb were lying.
It is my favorite thing about education research: that you have to remember that your subjects are a bunch of little scamps trying to prank you.

Look, I know what happens if you put a poll on tumblr and make Vanilla Extract one of the options.
In 7th grade summer camp our teacher had us do a survey of the neighboring village in teams, by just walking up and asking people questions like "what's your job?" or "what is the quality of running water in the village?".
The third or so person we interviewed was a man smoking on his balcony, who told us he was a professional smuggler, he has never gone to school, there was no running water in the village so they all have to drink alcohol all the time, and there was no school anywhere nearby, but that's okay because the local bar can teach children everything they need to know: to drink and brawl. And then he told us to send any other survey teams his way, because he'd be more than happy to help us out.
in junior year of highschool my art teacher would let our ceramics class play music of our choice off of her desktop. we usually used spotify or youtube but she did have one album downloaded on her computer. it was a halloween sound effects/ambience collection. i dont remember why she had it. there was a track on there called "burning screams" which was exactly what it sounds like. just a cacophony of screams alongside crackling fire. she only let us play it on very special occasions, and we would cheer and jump with joy every time. it was like a pizza party to us
please imagine 6 teenagers with giant sad puppy eyes looking at a dear sweet 50 something year old art teacher and asking "may we please hear burning screams"

I Am Not Your Asian American Doll: a comic for AAPI Heritage Month 2023
I usually spend a lot of time editing and fine-tuning my comics so that they come across as polite and inoffensive. But honestly, I’m really tired of the way Asian cultures and countries are treated / talked about while Asian people themselves are excluded, and thought it was about time I really let my rage out lol.
