“Not My Cup of Tea.”
I think this is a phrase that we should all start using more often.
I’ve noticed this trend of people who think their opinion is the only correct opinion. An opinion is just that - an opinion.
We all have different preferences, whether it’s art, music, food, decorating, whatever.
When someone has a differing opinion, sometimes people say things like “This music is terrible. This food sucks. I hate the colour green,” when really, we should all just say “It’s not my cup of tea.”
First, it’s just a kinder thing to do. How would you feel if people told you that your favourite band sucks? Or imply you’re stupid because your favourite colour is blue when obviously the best colour is red.
Secondly, if you’re respectful of other people’s opinions, they’re more likely to open up to you and your opinions.
Third, our diversity is what makes us wonderful. Could you imagine if we all listened to the same three bands? If we watched the same shows? If we all decorated our homes the same way? It would be a huge pain in the tush trying to get concert tickets, and it would be incredibly boring. Imagine trying to find your car in a parking lot filled with identical cars.
So next time someone likes something you don’t, try to say “It’s not my cup of tea.”
