“What you see is a myosin protein dragging an endorphin along a filament to the inner part of the brain’s parietal cortex which creates happiness. Happiness. You’re looking at happiness.”

Tama is boss

THE TRAINS HAVE CARTOON TAMAS ON THEM

Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.

Beautiful.

Now I’m crying thanks

and a new cat was hired right?

yep! her name is Nitama (essentially ”second tama” or “tama II”) and she served under Tama as an apprentice before being appointed her deputy

I’m crying at 11pm over train cats

Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016).  There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.

^Nitama majestic, and below with Yontama

Yontama.

a legacy

okay but actually what happened to santama (or sun-tama-tama, which is her name because it’s a pun on santama) was that she was basically sent to train for the position in okayama and they liked her so much they refused to send her back

“Sun-tama-tama” (a pun off of “Santama”, lit. “third Tama”) was a calico cat sent for training in Okayama. Sun-tama-tama was considered as a candidate for Tama’s successor, but the Okayama Public Relations representative who had been caring for Sun-tama-tama refused to give the cat up writing, “I will not let go of this child, she will stay in Okayama.” [25]
As of September 2018, Sun-tama-tama is working as the stationmaster in Naka-ku, Okayama and appears occasionally on Tama’s Twitter account.

Every time I see this post there’s new info and it gets better

You are only allowed to scroll pass this after you pay tribute to the great Tama Station masters.

The shrine of Tama Daimyōjin (Great gracious deity Tama), next to the Kishi station where she worked.

Nitama presenting her yearly offerings to Tama Daimyōjin on the anniversary of Tama’s Death, June 23 (The offerings are presented by the company president, as Nitama is a cat and thus can’t hold the offerings herself) (Not pictured, but also present, Yontama)

you cannot pass without reblogging guys. i’m sorry, i don’t make the rules.

True things about Commodus and headcanons

Hey everyone, I’m back! sorry I got sick and couldn’t focus on writing, but now I’m slowly getting back at it^^

I read a wonderful book about Commodus based on the latest archeological findings about him. And I thought you could all enjoy what I learned about him without having to read the book. It can inspire you for your imagines and also serve as headcanons! I hope you will enjoy this as much I enjoyed it!

- Commodus as a child, first suffered imperial education. Instead he preferred to sing, dance and goof around like a normal child.

- He had a twin named Antonnius who died when they were 4 years old, and that was an important trauma For Commodus.

- He also lost his little brother Annius who was seven years old. That other death impacted him even more, he was losing all his brothers.

- All his 8 brothers died, and Commodus survived a severe fever. These events made him seen even more as protected by the gods.

- Very early, he was seen as the new Hercules, there were statues of him as a child disguised in the hero. And in many ways, he was raised to believe he was the reincarnation of Hercules.

- He was a good student, many Greeks came to teach him until he was betrayed by his closest friend, a Greek. So, he decided to throw them all out of the palace.

- He was a very good speaker and is known for several speeches.

- He had a particular interest in moral studies.

- Commodus was soon criticized by nobles and senators because he saw ability over nobility and gave great power to freedmen.

- He loved to spend time by the sea where he was born in Lanuvium. He also enjoyed a lot his villa in Ostia, he brought him much peace to stay outside of Rome.

- Actually, Marcus Aurelius was a loving and even doting father to Commodus.

- Commodus was a headstrong child.

- Commodus was deemed lazy and careless but actually he was very involved in the decision-making process of the Empire, as much as his father and he actually personally answered the each petition the people.

- Commodus has been among the most well prepared to be emperor. All his life he accompanied his father everywhere he went. And he ruled by his side as junior emperor. Despite his young age he had a lot of experience already and even listened to experienced advisors to understand the politics in the city of Rome.

- As an adult Commodus remained very playful despite being Emperor. For example, he pushed one of his great friends in a swimming pool and they often drank and partied together.

- Commodus military strategy and victory in campaign were so successful that he managed to make the Empire’s enemies beg for a peace treaty and promise of no invasion of roman territories.

- The roman borders by the Danube which were crumbling and unstable under Marcus Aurelius were fortified on almost 400km by Commodus. The region became so safe and peaceful that the wealthy elite came back to this region and more agricultural lands were gained.

- He was the first emperor to take the title of Invictus meaning invincible.

- He didn’t care about social norms, like he kissed on the cheek freedmen he trusted (they were socially inferior, they should only kiss his hand)

- Commodus believed more in the power of the People rather than the Senate.

- He was described as tall, muscular, handsome with a better physique than any other man, he put gold dust in his hair (pretty boiii). He was known to have excellent health and immense strength (he stopped assassination attempts on him just by himself).

- For a big part of his reign, Commodus actually continued the policies of his father. He put an end to several wars and was awarded by the Athenian citizenship and declared Imperator 5 times.

- Marcus Aurelius was favorable to the persecutions of Christians and Christian nations. But under Commodus, the persecutions stopped. It is supposed to be because of his favorite concubine Marcia who had kindness for them and Commodus listened to her. It brought more social cohesion and political stability which is considered to be very innovative by historians.

- Commodus increased the laws to help the poor (financial aids, food distribution, etc)

- Lucilla hated Commodus’ wife because he granted her more privileges and importance in the life of the Empire than his sister. She was very jealous, including of him and tried to kill him

- After the conspiracy of Lucilla (with accomplices she tried to kill him at the games but he fought back), Commodus retreated to his estates outside of Rome and rarely appeared in public for a while in fear of treason. Still, he kept managing the Empire, listened to advisors and senators and personally answering the letters he received from provinces and people.

- During his banquets with 1000 guests, he loved to play jokes and prank them. Also, he served drinks in dick-shaped cups.

- He loved covering his friends in gifts.

- He was left-handed

- He was bisexual and showed it like Hercules by wearing both masculine and feminine clothes.

- As a gladiator Commodus fought and trained as a secutor which means he held a short sword, a dagger and a rectangular shield, he was mostly trained to fight the retiarius who had a trident and a net.

- He practiced hunting animals and trained in wrestling a lot. He was also a trained charioteer driver and bought racing horses himself.

- He was very skilled at using the spear and bow, often killing his opponents in one-shot (animals; gladiators didn’t kill each other).

- He took a bath 7-8 times a day because he loved living in luxury.

- Commodus unlike his predecessor and successors didn’t bury his head in the sand when faced with the structural deficit in state finances but the situation will only be solved under Caracalla. Still, coinage and written messages found that after the first ten years of rule of Commodus, show that Commodus had provided abundance and security to Rome.

- Commodus was called the Emperor of Peace, the temple of Janus which was constantly open under Marcus Aurelius because of war, was closed under Commodus because there was peace. Barbarians of the north had been defeated and some had become allies. Stability in Gaul and German provinces. Dacia and Britain were defeated at the time.

- Until his assassination Commodus was very popular with the army, praetorians and the People. In fact, he only became disliked by the senatorial alite because he had decided to tax them more, especially rich noble families.

- Because of the frequent fires devastating Rome and costing a lot of repairs to the Empire, Commodus created the position of Curator aquarium et Minuciae in charge of firefighting.

- Later in his reign and for many years Commodus was manipulated by his friend and advisor Cleander who used his trust to take down enemies (including other friends of Commodus) and gain more power (he was born a slave and went very high in the hierarchy of the empire). Later, the people protested against him and asked for him to be punished and on the request of Marcia, Commodus’ concubine and true love, he decapitated him. In fact, Cleander had taken more and more power, he was feared and had isolated Commodus from external events, he took liberties only an Emperor should have.

- After Cleander was executed, he was acclaimed even more by the romans.

- Commodus was praised for his devotion to duty and religious duty after he managed to go through the famine (at that moment he was officially called reincarnation of Hercules, because he brought prosperity). He was very religious and often participated in the ceremonies among the priests.

- Like in the Gladiator at the beginning, Commodus had longer hair with curls and later cut them to show how much he appreciated soldiers and gladiators.

- In case it wasn’t obvious, he was a big fan of gladiators and trained a lot with them in private.

- His wife had been caught cheating on him, so he exiled her and later she was executed. The people were so angry at her betrayal, especially the people in Rome and Ostia (particularly loyal to Commodus) mutilated her statues with great violence.

- He had 300 concubines, women and men. (apparently, he had a thing for big genitalia...I don’t know what to do about that information XD). His favorite concubine was Marcia, he even portrayed her as an Amazon on coins even though it was an honor only for the legal wife; but he treated her as such.

- And he refused to remarry because he loved her too much to marry another noble woman.

- Even in distant provinces the Emperor was commemorated as a divine hero.

- He shared his birthday with Caligula and Hercules. He renamed August as Commodianaand December (birth month of his love Marcia) as Amazonius.

- There was a great fire in 192 AD and Commodus popularity as a demigod was affected but he secured grains from the African fleet and Carthage and also rebuilt Rome until his death, that contributed to creating more jobs for the people.

- When he was assassinated, the senate declared him ‘Damnatio memoriae’ which means that his name was chiseled from inscriptions across the Empire and legal documents. Many of his statues were also destroyed.

- The murder of Commodus led to 100 years of civil war, barbarian invasions and the Antonine aristocracy being almost totally wiped out.

- Commodus is buried in the Mausoleum of Hadrian in Rome.

- The praetorians were shocked as the Emperor they adored suffered such end, even more as the new emperor Pertinax had the statues of Commodus destroyed. The new emperor however he no support from the consuls, army, praetorians or the People. He only had the Senate, so he forbids the praetorians to carry weapons and avoid their revenge on him. (Still the praetorians put in action a conspiracy 3 days later into his reign.)

- Commodus murderer was hunted down and thrown to the wild beasts in the arena for all to appreciate the revenge for their dead Emperor.

- The successor of Commodus was later killed by a revolt of 300 praetorians while ancient members of Commodus household and the people cheered for Commodus’ death revenge. (That emperor was a total failure who ruined the sate of finances by giving back money to senators and who degraded relations with states that had signed peace with Commodus. The Empire ended up being ‘for sale’. That year was called the year of the five emperors, showing how much the death of Commodus had impacted the whole Empire.

- 3 years after his death, Commodus was deified, and his name restored.

- In the end, he was betrayed and killed by love, his concubine that he madly loved.

Vinegar valentines were a type of cheeky postcard decorated with a caricature and insulting poem that gained popularity in the Victorian era. Cheaply made, they were usually printed on one side of a single sheet of paper and cost only a penny.

The unflattering cards reportedly created a stir throughout all social levels, sometimes provoking fisticuffs and arguments. The receiver, not the sender, was responsible for the cost of postage up until the 1840s.
