I almost made this an “Ode to the Insane Talent of Colin Morgan” post, but I didn’t think that was fair seeing as I haven’t actually had the privilege of seeing the actual film yet.
Have a close look at the gif above. Victor kisses Vera’s left cheek, and as they move to kiss their other cheeks, watch Victor closely. As he moves, he slows down, hesitates oh-so-slightly as Vera’s face passes in front of his. His eyes drift to her lips and the split-second of hope, of yearning is so palpable that it’s like a kick in the stomach (as least to me) when you watch it.
But Vera never notices his reaction because she isn’t even really looking at him. To her, it’s an automatic gesture of greeting or goodbye to her friend. To Victor, every time is one more chance, no matter how small, that Vera might finally see him.
Then the moment is gone, and he hurries his movement so that his hesitation goes unnoticed. Watch the look on Colin’s face as he pulls back from the cheek kiss. His lips are pursed into a grim line of resignation and that brief light of excitement and anticipation in his eyes has been extinguished.
Here, study this same clip with a little bit added to the end:

As Victor takes a step back, look at how his expression changes once again. There is a fire of determination in Victor’s eyes here, a fierce devotion that clearly says he would still give his life to protect her, even knowing she would never be his.
And all of that broadcasted by Colin in 3 seconds without one word spoken.
I have never seen an actor with better command over minute facial expressions than Colin. He truly is a master at it.
