GX Month Week 1, Prompt: You and Me / Superhero(s)
Behind on the prompts for my own event. 🙃 *stress ball noises* I’m fiiiine.
“We should have nicknames.”
Chinatsu looks up from her textbook at the sudden declaration. Judai tends to think aloud, so she’s used to hearing him say random things and checking that he’s even looking at her before responding. Judai stares straight back at her, a thoughtful look on his face.
A grin stretches across his face as he lifts his head from his arms. “If it’s us against the world, we should have nicknames, like codenames no one else knows.”
“You’ve been watching superhero movies again, haven’t you?” Chinatsu deadpans and Judai sticks tongue out.
“Okay, but what kind of nicknames? I’m not letting you call me some weird hero name.”
Judai leans back, tipping the chair onto it’s front legs as he holds on to the backrest. Chinatsu thought this was just another one his passing moods, but he looks genuinely thoughtful, a sudden far away look in his eyes as he murmurs, “Christina...”
“Foreign name?” Whatever she’d been expecting hadn’t been that.
Judai’s eyes spark back to life as he rocks forward and the chair clacks down onto all for legs again. “We’d stick out like a sore thumb with English names, it’s brilliant!”
“Eh?” Chinatsu blinks, unease curling in the pit of her stomach. But they’re already outcasts and weirdos, and Judai’s eyes looks so bright. (It’s not often anymore she sees such genuine joy on his face.) Sighing, she props her chin on a hand. “Then what name are you going with?”
“You pick one. I’ve already chosen yours.”
“Oi, I didn’t agree to that!”
“Dontcha know? Nicknames are things given to you by other people, not chosen by yourself.” The wink he throws her is far too smug, and Chinatsu can feel her hackles rising. “Besides, it’s pretty, isn’t it?” Judai adds, softer, more genuine, that far away look in his eyes again, like he’s looking at her but not actually seeing her.
Yo, moron! Don’t go somewhere I can’t drag you back from!
Huffing, Chinatsu looks out the window and rolls the syllables around in her head instead of firing back any one of about a dozen insults and complaints. Kurisuchiina. She supposes it is pretty, so it’s not a bad name to be stuck with. “Alright. I’ll think of something for you then.”
The smile that breaks across Judai’s face is pure sunshine. “Sweetness!”
