tumblr higher ups seem to be nail bitingly desperate to get people to try tumblr live. so, because i am a merciful soul, i am extending this offer to current tumblr ceo matt mullenweg: dear matt, if you wire me $30,000 american dollars, i promise to open tumblr live and spend at least ten minutes looking around. i am willing to sign a legally binding contract reflecting this. i look forward to hearing from your representatives

spotify stays begging for me to come back. unfortunately for them YouTube music has shown that they can actually help me find great music much more quickly and with so many more options. In the last few weeks using only YouTube music I've found more great songs than I did in a few months using Spotify. Spotify tries to act like they have so many different options for finding unique music every day but in reality it's always the same 30 songs in each daily mix with maybe a couple new ones thrown in for a little extra spice.

Sometimes I’m looking for something online - often “how to” articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decades’ worth of experience. I don’t want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesn’t understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I don’t know what search settings to put into Google to get this.

The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they aren’t sufficiently search engine optimized.

“It is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didn’t even know you were looking for. If you search for “Plato”, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaiman’s blog.

If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, you’re on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?

I don’t expect this will be the next “big” search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.“

i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!

it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.

INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.

tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but …

My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.

Good luck out there surfing the cyberweb, you crazy cats. I love the shoelace website too - Ian’s Shoelace Site [link], unless there’s another. My personal favorite old-school site is Alysion’s string figure collection [link].

maybe the problem w remakes of old kitschy sci-fi shows is that sci-fi means something fundamentally different than it did when these stories were made, it's almost a different genre now bc the level of fantasy dramatically goes down the more scientists do the shit we were dreaming about. If u wana do justice by trek u need to remember that it was almost entirely about magic. Automatic doors were magic. Food recycling was magic. people hanging out in space for long periods of time was magic and thats why they dressed like gay cyber wizards and that's why if u don't let them dress like gay cyber wizards ur missing the point

people on tiktok when they do the filter that shapeshifts your child face into your current face, and it shapeshifts their child face into their current face: 😦☹️😢

love scrolling down and seeing a suggested post that gives me a jump scare bc it genuinely looks like the person is doing blackface/minstrel makeup in the year of our lord 2023

(to be clear they had edited their face to look like something from the Mandela Catalog. but geez man)

I for one don't like the idea of mandatory collapsible reblogs because it makes it harder for me to get the Uniquely Tumblr Experience of reading an informative post, then reading the reblog where someone completely destroys and debunks the op, then somebody ELSE reblogs with "actually..." Then you get to read through 5 or 6 more not being sure which side you're supposed to be on til the end of the chain. Then sometimes you go in the notes and find even more chaos and come out ultimately with net zero information. Amazing.

Also why do I keep seeing Tumblr users with little guys next to their usernames where other people have checkmarks

They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.

More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. You can follow what is happening at their Twitter.

god why am I suddenly seeing more of the particular side of the true crime community which romanticizes/sexualizes murderers. No, that person isn't your "little scrunkly." They shot up a building and killed people. Time to expand my blocklist and filtered tags
