Need to be old and a hater for a second. Someone tell the kids to stop making “fancam”s and start making full blown AMVs again. I am Being deprived.

No more 15 second loops CUT IT OUT. I need the full song. AT LEAST a minute and a half. I need the Sony Vegas Adobe After Effects filters and editing. I need voiced lines spliced into the video for impact. This is an ART FORM. COMMIT.

This post came across my dash back in October and I got an ulcer from reading it because from my standpoint, there are always so many new vids out here. All the time. I understand the sentiment, tho' because I love me some full length vids a lot, but fancams are great for different reasons. The rise of fancams is a whole different post (and something people have ranted/discussed avidly in the replies/tags). Instead I’ve decided to share some ways you can look through a few platforms for full-length fanvids. 🎬 Take my hand and I'll show you where to find what you want. ❤️ This post is not meant to be exhaustive, but a starting point (and I encourage others to add where they’ve found their favorite vids!). There are many new vids being posted every month for cons and exchanges and everything in between.

A Guide for Fanvid Discovery Tumblr + Tags

AO3 Tags + Searches

The 'Fanvids' tag seems to be the most common tag that vidders have been using since we got the ability to embed video on AO3. 14,000 results is a lot, so you can narrow that down through AO3's search feature. Fandom and character/relationship tags will go along way for you:

You can also use the 'any field' to search for the music in addition to a fandom + fanvids and narrow down your search that way. Vidders don't always put the musician/song in the tags but they will in the notes or text part of the AO3 page.

Alright so maybe you don't want to go hunting with searches for new vids. You want the soul-affirming vids NOW. Consider this an AO3 Collection/starter pack where you will find many vids that are +3mins in length and will change your life:

AO3 Collections for Cons and Exchanges

Convention Databases

  • VidUKon Conline (often will have embeds/links to vidder's posts)
  • Vividcon Vid Database (might require some googling to find vid posts/embeds because this database has a lot of old vids, but you can download spreadsheet form of vid playlists to help you google later)
  • Fanworks Vid Database (so many playlists! waiting for you to watch!)

Other Resources

  • Vidding on dreamwidth (vid announcements/end of year roundup posts)
  • Vidding on discord (over 200 members who are brilliant and funny and make great vids and know how to look for source, will always have a vid rec for you and teach you about frame rates and export error codes. Vid announcement posts+ao3 feed, cheerleading about finishing a new vid for the upcoming conventions...)
  • Multifandom Calendar - (this is a calendar/list view of upcoming cons and exchanges that accept vid premieres. Resource collated by VidderAdmin. Note the dates and keep your eyes out for the con-goers vid posts on social media.)
  • Vidding Conventions Twitter List (also collated by VidderAdmin, similar to the calendar, just a collection of all of con accounts on twitter)
  • How To Leave Feedback on Fanvids - (by me @kuwdora - I wrote a guide to beginner/intermediate/advanced feedback for fanvids. But really just leave any kind of positive comment for a vidder and you'll feed them for years.)

I know once I hit post I'm going to remember all the things I forgot to include here..but like I said before, this is a starting point for discovering new-to-you fanvids that are longer than 30 seconds and will speak to your soul. I left out YouTube fanvid discovery on account that's a whole bag of algorithms I wasn't ready to dig into here. Find a vid you love? Like, reblog, scream in the tags. Write a comment. Write the vidder an email if you can find their address. Write a rec so people know what you’ve been watchin’! Then other people can see it too! Make a playlist, share a playlist. ❤️ What are you watching? What have you found? What tags are you finding and browsing on other platforms to find fanvids?

This is an amazing resource.

Here's a small list of some of my favorites, including Buffy, The Untamed, and Guardian.

My own vids, including The Untamed, Heaven Official's Blessing, Muppet Goncharov, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

“We tend to think of censorship as aiming to destroy information that already exists. But when we observe the real behaviors of bodies like the Inquisition, they rarely attempt that—focusing instead on labeling or policing information, trying to control who accesses what, and on spreading fear of their authority. If we look at the condemnation of Galileo, it was only a “failure” if we presume the goal was to silence Galileo’s ideas. The condemnation also frightened Descartes into not publishing a newly-completed radical treatise, which he then revised heavily to be much more orthodox and Catholic. The condemnation “succeeded” in preventing the publication of Descartes’s ideas, and those of numerous others who decided to self-censor out of fear. This led to one of the project’s conclusions: the majority of censorship is self-censorship, but the majority of self-censorship is intentionally cultivated by a censoring authority.”

I always knew something was fucked up with that artificial sugar shit. Never liked it, I was genuinely confounded by the number of people who claimed it tasted identical.

NO.

this is about the IARC not the FDA. the IARC (international agency for research on cancer) is part of the WHO (world health organization) and not a food safety agency. they classify "agents" (chemical, physical, or biological entities or exposure circumstances) based on how likely they are to cause cancer:

Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans (126 agents)

Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans (94 agents)

Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans (322 agents)

Group 3: Not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans

this new classification of aspartame as 2B "possibly carcinogenic to humans" is the result of a review of available studies, and mostly intended to encourage additional research. it is not aimed at consumers/the public and it does not take dosage or frequency into account.

for context: apart from aspartame, group 2B includes things like "aloe vera, whole leaf extract", "carpentry", "magnetic fields", and "traditional asian pickled vegetables"

"occupation as a hairdresser or barber", "very hot beverages at above 65°C" (149°F), and "consumption of red meat" are all classified as 2A

and Group 1 includes "alcoholic beverages", "epstein-barr virus", "salted fish", "processed meat", and being a painter.

anyway. this is fearmongering and disinformation. stop using memes for news and dont reblog "news" posts without sources.

original reuters report:

where is that net zero information quote

Something I need y’all youngins to understand growing up in the age of crypto and streaming is that digital ownership is not ownership. Digital ownership is renting.

If you have, say, House (2022) on Netflix. That new stop motion movie. You don’t own that movie. You pay to have access, to that movie, but you don’t physically own it. It isn’t yours to take with you or put in a blu ray player. You’re paying to maybe watch it.

The movie is something you can access so long as Netflix is active and you pay for access. If one of those things changes you no longer can see that movie. If the movie goes to a different streaming service it is gone. (You should buy any movie you want to see again or would be sad if it left streaming).

Same with digital video games. Silent Hills PT is a playable trailer that, because of the Kojima/Konami dispute, was pulled from PSN. You cannot download it anymore. A physical disc cannot be taken from you, it can always be put in your console and played. Having the physical game is owning it having the downloaded game is renting it.

You’re promised these things forever but you only have access to rented digital goods for as long as the site supports it. And eventually that will change. You can pop in a Mario 64 cartridge into your N64 anytime you want and play. You cannot download a digital copy of Halo 2 to an original xbox because that support has been shut down (and modern consoles don’t let you carry your entire library on your system storage). If you have a disc of Horizon Zero Dawn you can always play it. If you have a digital copy that will go away given enough time.

Same with digital card games. Magic the Gathering has had multiple online formats. When they close one to make another your entire collection is gone. They offer you the idea of collecting but it only means anything if the servers are active. Physical cards can always be used and can even be used in inventive ways like horde mode. That’s how commander/EDH got its start.

Spotify is great for music exploration but download music you like. Go to the library and check out cd’s to put on your computer or go to bandcamp and get albums DRM free. My family switched itunes email accounts in 2011 and its junked up 3 years of purchases requiring us to rebuy them.

As much as NFT bros want you to believe it digital ownership is NOT ownership. The concept of digital ownership relies on false scarcity (minting a limited number of NFT’s when more could have been made) and a few clever words to make you think the netflix library is YOUR movie library. Its really fucking convenient for big businesses who can squeeze every drop of money out of you without giving anything tangible in return.

Digital ownership is NOT ownership.

I think the next big cool trend should be everybody gets a VCR again and everybody pirates all the digital media to vhs tapes. that's what I think ought. The video games we can figure out different.

VHS is terrible for archiving because the quality is low and the tapes wear out. Get an external DVD or blu-ray drive and archive them on disc.

Some character designs with some…atypical color choices? I guess. I don’t know what’s going on in that area.

This is Nimona and her supervillain friend (He doesn’t have a name yet, I’m working on that). Nimona is his sidekick/squire, they’re like the Batman and Robin of slightly Medieval villains, but she’s actually way more evil than him. He does what he does to make a point, and he doesn’t really want anyone get hurt - Nimona just gets a kick out of destroying stuff.

I’m going to attempt to make a two page comic with them? We’ll see how this goes.

This was tagged #homework and posted in December 2011.

So bluesky isn't safe for artists and writers at all

Avatar

Actually, here’s the correct information on this: https://twitter.com/MarcoMA4PS/status/1675958135993819137?s=20

"Hi Marco, We currently use Hive’s existing models to generate labels for images — so this is the tool that helps us identify NSFW images, so we can apply the proper labels to them. Hive does not use Bluesky account content to fine-tune/train their models. That said, Bluesky  is a public social network and AI companies might be scraping data from the internet! We actually just revised our Terms of Service to have less legalese in response to conversations with artists a few weeks ago to clarify that we do not own their content. That updated version  of the TOS was published last week and you can find it here: https://blueskyweb.xyz/support/2023-06-29/tos…. We're always striving to make the dense technical, legal, etc. info easier to parse. “

Read the thread for more info

TLDR no bluesky is not scraping your art for training, this was disproven pretty immediately.

Reason I am glad there's no sign of a Jewish knight in Arthurian legend: All of the antisemitism that the source material and adaptations would probably have heaped on such a character.

Reason I am sad there's no sign of a Jewish knight in Arthurian legend: Missed opportunity for someone with hidden ill-intentions to manipulate hospitality at Camelot to gain a promise that "No good Christian knight" may stand against them, whereupon they wreak havoc until our boy gets to pull a religious version of the Éowyn Reveal.

I couldn't resist

OP may i recommend King Artus, a Sephardic Arthur manuscript written in Hebrew in the 1200s

Twitter users will not survive the winter

What do they mean it’s impossible to have conversations there’s at least three different ways to do so here

"It's impossible to have conversations there" -person coming from a website where DM'ing is now paywalled behind Twitter Blue.

"Your timeline hasn't moved in 45 minutes" Then follow people?????

The Tumblr culture says you're not supposed to respond to posts in the body of the post because it'll, IDK, ruin other people's experiences with the post? You don't talk to people on Tumblr, you just shout into the void. I have more conversations about Tumblr posts on other sites than on Tumblr itself.

It's so strange to me that the people in this post think DMs are required for a conversation. You just have to be able to go back and forth. If anyone on this post is having a conversation, it's lost to me. I see a collection of single responses from separate people. Maybe some of these people are talking to each other elsewhere, or maybe other people have already made comments like mine, or written scathing rebukes to these comments. They're not here, so I can't see them.

Tumblr's got great features all of its own. I mean, the "yes, and" game here is epic. But Twitter and Reddit have features that are being lost on their own sites and not replicated here is a loss for the internet, not an insult to the good name of Tumblr.

Yes Elon is bad at running Twitter. It should be noted that he is more than likely intentionally tanking the value of Twitter, so he can declare bankruptcy. He must do this while looking like he's doing his best.

Remember, all this happened because he joked on Twitter about buying Twitter to temporarily spike his Twitter stock. This is blatantly insider trading, and the sort of thing the SEC loves punishing people for.

This put Elon in a tricky place. He could say he was joking, and risk getting investigated by the SEC. Or he could double down, and actually buy Twitter to prove he wasn't lying to boost his stock price. These were both horrible options for Elon. But being investigated by the SEC is the type of thing that rich people have nightmares about.

So he was forced to buy Twitter. He could not afford Twitter. So he was forced to engage in a leveraged buyout, meaning he had to pay a big chunk of the check in Tesla stock. This was a shit deal for Elon. Twitter was well known for essentially being at the peak of it's profitability, and the previous owners were looking for a nice exit. They were happy to sell the company to Elon for what was probably the highest price tag Twitter would ever have.

What this meant for Elon, was he had just used several billion dollars of his actually profitable company, and had to tie it's ankles to a company that would only drop in value. (and a company he had no idea how to run.) If Twitter drowns, Tesla does too.

His only way out is to tank Twitters value so the company can declare bankruptcy, sell off the assets, and stop bleeding money. But he can't LOOK like he's doing that ON PURPOSE for the same reason that he had to double down on buying Twitter in the first place: the SEC is very scary.

Elon Musk owes nearly $2 billion to a Saudi prince and that is a debt that will not be erased by bankruptcy. That's not a great debt to have.

Elon Musk is a fucking moron. He's not playing 3D chess. He's not some clever businessman who figured out an exit strategy for his problems. He's a dumbass who made a 420/69 joke and had to legally go through with it, and now he's trying to bail out the Titanic with an $8 bucket. He fires anyone who tells him no, so there's no one with any sense left to fix this mess.

If he were a regular person who had maxed out their credit cards to create an essential oil-infused yoga mats business which flopped as hard as someone who tried to do a half lotus tree position on a greased-up yoga mat you wouldn't go "Oh, how clever they are, to burn down their house without insurance and put themselves in bankruptcy!" No. You'd think they were dumbasses.

But someone has "richest man in the world" in his resume and you automatically think he knows what he's doing. No. He bought other people's ideas and he paid for the right to call them his own. He'll probably get through this because that's what pricks like him do, but never doubt that he's landing safely because he's got a whole pile of money there to cushion the fall. He has earned nothing in his life.
