Just fell down the gaping butthole of Snape vs Marauders discourse and goddamn is that the spikiest butthole I've ever been in.
My posts don't get a lot of traction, but I feel like I have to make this one because I'm currently working on a Harry Potter rewrite, which I'll include the link to.
I'm changing a lot of things in both eras/generations of Harry Potter, most of which is basically trying to make it not suck in terms of being offensive, insensitive, and prejudiced.
I'm writing this story for ME (mostly), and the characters in it are MY version of them. I'm the kind if person that's very indecisive and confused by nature, but also very opinionated at the same time, which means that when I write for myself, I like there to be an obvious difference between who you are and are not supposed to be rooting for.
What that means is that, even though this is a fan fiction based on someone else's original story, some characters who were previously bad (Evan, Barty, Peter, Draco, to name a few) are going to be rewritten differently. These will be completely different people than who they were in canon, and probably some fanon, and even if the base of the characters are the same, their actions and development are completely disconnected, at least in my mind. This is a REWRITE, not an adaptation. These characters are NEW. This story is my version of "What if?".
And it goes the other way, too. Some characters (Snape, Slughorn, Dumbledore, etc.) are going to do things that are more blatantly bad. I'll obviously be trying my best to still make everyone an actual person and not a 2D archetype, but this is a learning experience for me too, so I'm not sure how good I am at that yet.
If someone doesn't like the Marauders, great. You're entitled to your opinion, and honestly, considering canon, I don't like them sometimes too. If you don't like Snape, you're also entitled to your opinion. But either way, if anyone on any side of any argument ends up reading my story, keep in mind, once again, that this is a rewrite, and that this story's characters are all their own versions of themselves.

And fuck JKR, obviously. She ruined her own stories for so many people, so I want to make something people might actually enjoy. It's half out of spite and half because I'm queer and I'm desperate, but I also completely understand when people say anything related to HP puts a sour taste in their mouth. It does that for me, too, which is why I'm rewriting it.
