finished a sketch commission for @kiqo-gw2-corner, of their super cool mistswalking charr muna! feat a familiar face
(screencap so that I can add pictures) Thank you so much!! And oh boy, well, I’m sorry to tell you that a lotta of my process of drawing charrs in general is “bullshit until it looks right-ish and cool”. That said here is how I go about the necks since I think they’re really fun shapes!
I’m more stylized, so I try to explore ways to get the idea across in as few lines as possible. So charr necks I tend to draw like a series of lines like so:
And for the front I tend to start with a diamond, thinking of the neck on normal humans but exaggerating it. I then take those 3 top lines, and bottom 2 lines and twist and squash them around into shapes I like! I break a lotta my own rules sometimes if it means it’s a more interesting shape or just looks better that way.
For more bulky characters I still use the same line rules, but just further exaggerate them ahaha! Sometimes even add extra lines, since fat, fur, and muscle can hang and move around in really interesting ways!
If you want to look to real life more, then I’d say look to bears more than cats for the neck specifically! Bears have much thicker necks that are pretty similar to charr imo!
It’s also worthwhile looking into how others stylize bears or other animals with thicker necks to get an idea of shapes you can use! (this one specifically from Brother Bear)
This is just my style of course and not a for sure way to draw them, but I hope this made some sense and maybe gave you a few ideas to try out!
