Top Gun Maverick Has Taken Over My Life

@temptressyou

don’t mind me wasting time on here when I should be doing homework

This. Movie.

It’s been months and I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t stop thinking about the hot fighter pilots but mostly I can’t stop thinking about the relationship between rooster and Mav, which was the driving force for basically the whole movie. It’s so obvious how much Mav loves Bradley. And especially in the scene where they’re in the air in the F-14 deciding what to do once they see the enemy planes.

Rooster: “You’d go after them if I wasn’t here.”

Mav, in a soft voice, terrified to lose someone else he loves, “But you are here.”

I swear the way Mav says that—how his voice gets all vulnerable and soft and shit—killed me. That’s the voice of a dad who is doing his best to protect his child. That’s the voice of a pilot terrified to lose anyone else close to him. Mav is so protective of Bradley and it shows in that scene. Because Bradley is right if he weren’t in the backseat Mav would have already engaged those enemy fighters. But he hesitates. Because it’s not just his life on the line.

And then he precedes to do some of the pilot shit.

The way I still cry when I watch this movie is probably unhealthy. But that’s not gonna stop me from running to target the day the dvd comes out (:

If Taylor ever released a live recording of Evermore (Piano Version) (Era's Tour Version) I would listen to it every single day of my life

You know for an artist with approximately 200 songs in their discography, half of which were released in the last 4 years, it's super impressive Taylor not only knows the words to all her songs but can also flawlessly play any of them on piano or guitar.

thinking again about the girl in the dress wrote you a song.... and all the dresses in her songs... with you i'd dance in a storm in my best dress fearless, the girl in the dress cried the whole way home, spinning like a girl in a brand new dress, you're still all over me like a wine stained dress i can't wear anymore, only bought this dress so you could take it off, ripped up my prom dress running through rose thorns, the flickers of light from the dress i wore at midnight... the dress as the romantic beginnings of your adolescence. the dress as a symbol of your naivety and your girlhood. the dress as a new beginning. the dress as a mark of shame. the dress as sexual agency. the dress as your battle armor, falling apart. the dress as a memory, a relic of the past. the dress as a reclamation of power.

Listening to Taylor’s version of eyes open and safe & sound and suddenly I’m back in 2012 hearing it for the first time as the credits roll by from the hunger games

Sidenote: I FEEL LIKE IVE TRANSPORTED BACK IN TIME DANG I forgot how amazing safe & sound is. It sounds so ethereal

i'm also gonna force a discussion about eyes open down everyone's throats. the lyrics obviously tie in well with the narrative on the hunger games but i always thought it was interesting to interpret it as a disillusionment with fame, especially considering it sits right between the speak now and red eras, sort of like a bridge between the optimism in long live (winning battles with our wooden swords!!!) and the weariness in the lucky one (everybody's waiting for you to breakdown)

it feels almost like foreshadowing for the reputation era like. so so so so so so so so so underrated

taylor wrote “everybody’s waiting for you to break down, everybody’s watching to see the fall out, even when you’re sleeping keep you’re eyes open” and then put it on the Hunger Games soundtrack so we would not ask questions about her mental health even though that song was so written about her

I need to talk about the emotional difference between eyes open and eyes open tv

eyes open og is emotionally coming from a place of fear. the taylor who wrote and recorded the original was reading a book in which an obvious holywood allegory literally sends young people to kill each other for entertainment. she and her peers are considered the epitome of the young holywood drama. she is seeing them one by one get picked off by the media and the public and is terrified of her eventual missteps. eyes open is a message to herself “you better keep your eyes open because they want you to die. they think it’ll be funny.”

eyes open tv is emotionally a declaration of victory. the taylor who recorded the rerecord has come through the other side. she almost died from the hate they threw at her… and she knows that the missteps that 2011 taylor was worried about and the hate thrown at her in 2012 were nowhere near the worst of it. she knows the journey that fear took her from convincing herself she could never be happy to trying to please everyone and losing herself. she knows that she almost died from it. eyes open tv is a message to her past very much in line with “you can face this” of yoyok… but it’s angrier, sadder… it’s vengeful and full of grief for her past.

“keep your eyes open” was a warning, a demand, a pleading beg…

and it became a victory cry.

It’s so funny how the re recordings made me realize how much I’ve literally studied every voice inflection and the way she sings certain words in each song for years…cause then I hear a difference in the Taylor’s version and am thrown off. Give me a PhD in whatever this is
