since i last looked into this, the science has moved on from "most children will react badly to food dyes but it most significantly messes up adhd and autistic kids" to "we're looking into the possibility that exposure to food dyes is actually causing learning disabilities in the first place"

like i said in the tags this is another example of why, when a big trendy debunk is going around that seems to go against direct observational evidence, it's worth looking into, because "sugar doesnt cause hyperactivity" was the drum to bang about ten years ago when it is plain to anyone affected by these dyes or who supervises children that are affected by them that yes, a lot of children (and adults) DO go apeshit if they drink enough hawaiian punch or eat enough swedish fish or pink cupcake icing and there is plenty of replicated in vitro human research showing as much. it's not the sugar, but candy and processed food and entertainment drinks containing these dyes can cause illness and altered behavior just like people have been observing after kids tear through a pound of assorted halloween candy. i personally had an incident on an airplane with a dose of liquid Benadryl that kept me awake for about two days when i was 4, and a a teenager noticed that drinking red gatorade would cause a weird euphoria.

anyway this is usseful info for adhd/autistic adults, people who supervise kids of any age or brain type, and in general if youre interested and able to make food choices for yourself (not everyone can obviously)

Y'all I haven't looked deeply enough into this to really judge the veracity of these claims, but PLEASE keep in mind that

tl;dr be more skeptical than usual of any claim that something causes autism and ADHD

Yeah so I looked it up and basically the "food dyes cause hyperactivity and behavior problems" idea was originally proposed and studied in the 70's. These studies were NOT even single-blind and involved putting kids on a strict 'elimination diet' that cut out many more foods than just dyes, let alone red dyes specifically.

Later studies exploring this idea have been mixed, with plenty of studies finding no connection between dyes and children's behavior, and others finding that a small subset of kids may be negatively affected by food dyes, possibly as a result of a genetic predisposition to sensitivity.

This hasn't stopped parents obsessed with anything marketed as "natural" from buying special dye-free candy and fruit snacks though.

Basically around the beginning of 20th century mathematicians were arguing about how to eliminate paradoxes from coming up in maths, and they were questioning whether the bases of maths, known for thousands of years, are complete / correct

In geometry there were those five principles from which everything else was derived, and mathematicians were like: „See, we’ll prove that geometry is sound and complete bc without any one of those principles nothing will make sense!”

And then it made sense. It made too much sense in many weird ways when they removed the 5th principle.

And so, topology was born, simply because mathematicians were so sure it wouldn’t work they decided to try it out as a joke
