part of the reason why the whole "men/boys are taught not to cry!!!! its so sad for them!!!!" thing bothers me is because so many women i know went through childhood and young adult life staring into the middle distance in order to be taken seriously as people. its devastating to learn as a child that crying is associated with "femininity" weakness and hysteria and to witness all around you how these farcical patriarchal claims are used to dismiss women's distress. different human emotions being assigned specific genders and "feminine emotions" specifically being belittled and degraded can actually make women recoil from them in order to be treated like a person, isn't that funny

like the notion that men/boys grow up learning to be repulsed by their own emotional vulnerability (i.e. "femininity") actually also extends to women and girls and everyone else too. the rest of us don't just go through life happily and comfortably emoting and have those emotions received with open arms

Fucking big mood, punch me in the gut why doncha. I’m an angry crier too and it’s the worst, you can see people don’t take me as serious once I start crying.

Okay, so y'all know the phenomenon where American media companies say they can't produce queer stories because they'll just get censored in foreign markets? It's transparent as hell, because the dominant culture of the United States is still violently queerphobic, and in many cases, state queerphobia in other countries is the direct result of Christian imperialism. The US is not the enlightened gay haven in a world of evil homophobic foreigners, and trying to pretend that American media can't be too gay because it'll be censored overseas is asinine. We all know that, right?

Anyway, today I learned that there is an episode of the Australian cartoon Bluey that has been censored in the United States because it shows the dad character pretending to be pregnant and have a baby as part of a game of pretend. Disney refuses to air it on the Disney Channel or on Disney+. It has been made available on YouTube by the Australian rights holders.

So let's quit fucking pretending that Disney is actually scared of foreign censors, hm? The queerphobic censorship is coming from inside the House of Mouse, and it always has been.

I will continue shouting about this on every post I see about Bluey getting censored in the states, because it's like, m u l t i p l e episodes for all sorts of stupid shit.

All of the Bluey episodes are available for free from the network that created it right there on their website, here's the link:

See this, this is what I like about TikTok. Little moments like this

[ID: A TikTok video. The original contains two trans women, one of whom is saying "Wanna see what two trans girls do behind closed doors?" as she closes a door. There are three duets (response posts that are glued to the video they're responding to), of men who say "is it Warhammer?" as the original video pans to a table.

The woman says "It's fucking Warhammer." All three of the men cheer enthusiastically. /end ID]

"Aye, there's plenty a strange thing to be found in the White Seas…" The old sailor took a drag of her pipe, smoke swirling blue into the air. "But few are as strange as the Isle of Birds. You come up on it at dawn and those columns loom out of the mists like giants at the start of creation; made of this shining black glass stuff that they say's never been chipped nor broken nor shattered. But at the tops of them is a city, all the little houses and fountains tucked in with gardens hanging all around. And loud! Birds of every kind singing and screaming around you. The people are the same as you 'n me -- 'cept their rulers, of course. Strange folk, you'll never see 'em without their masks and gloves. But who's behind the masks? No one can tell."

24 hours ago i was thinking that the three body problem appeared to be a fairly dense sci-fi book that would take some time to read. that is not my experience. i am 250 pages in and forcing myself to get up and make dinner now so i can finish this tonight without my stomach trying to eat itself. SUCH a tale. i won't survive another day at work with this book waiting for me. i might have to buy the series because the library cannot get these to me fast enough

people are saying do it scared, but you also gotta do it alone. you'll miss out on so much you want to do if you wait til someone will do it with you. do it scared and do it alone.

The important thing is that Marcille did not learn to blaspheme against the natural order to save her girlfriend. She just happened to have studied the art of spitting in God's eye for wholly unrelated reasons, and when the opportunity by chance arose to employ that skill in service of girlfriend-saving, she was ready.

I will now share a little factoid from the Swedish pen & paper role-playing scene that the rest of the world isn’t that aware of. First of all, we love Disney. Not all of Disney equally, but specifically Donald Duck and his friends. We -love- Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Scrooge McDuck comic books.

Now, bear that in mind when I tell you how in the Swedish version of Dungeons & Dragons, Drakar och Demoner (literally Dragons and Demons), you can play Duck characters.

I am not shitting you.

Behold… The evidence.

  • White-throated Sparrows have 2 color morphs: one with white stripes on their head, and one with tan stripes on their head. Both males and females can be either white-striped or tan-striped. White-striped individuals are more aggressive, outgoing, and territorial, while tan-striped individuals are less outgoing, and have been found to be more "attentive" parents. Pretty much all mating pairs are composed of a white-striped individual and a tan-striped individual. However, its been found that all females prefer tan-striped males and all males prefer white-striped females. But because the white-striped females are more aggressive, they end up getting the tan males first, and then the white males and tan females end up pairing up.

  • Vultures in the Americas evolved separately from vultures in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The have similar traits from evolving into similar niches, but theyre not actually closely related
  • Personal anecdote rather than a Fact, but when I interned at a hawkwatch, we would set up a big fake owl on a pole solely for the purpose of seeing if we could get the migrating raptors to fly in closer to try to scare it off. The larger birds like Red-tailed Hawks and Red-shouldered Hawks and the larger falcons like Peregrines would usually only dive in on the fake owl when they had already been flying directly overhead of it. The American Kestrels however, which are about the size of a Mourning Dove (or like a twelfth the size of a Great Horned Owl, which is what the fake was representing), would make 90 degree turns from 2+ miles out of the way to come in and divebomb the fake owl before continuing on their migration path. And I just always found that really funny. Heres a female and male American Kestrel (male has the grey on his wings)

  • Green Herons often use bait to catch fish. They'll toss a bug or a smaller (dead) fish or something into the water and wait till the fish gather around it, then grab ones that are the right size for them. Here's one doing it with bread

  • Theres a population of about 2000 Rosy-faced Lovebirds in Phoenix, AZ (theyre native to Africa) that have learned to use air conditioning vents to stay cool. They only use them when temperatures are over 90F/32C

  • Mourning Doves can fly up to 55mph/88kph
  • Woodpeckers dont just peck stuff to find bugs. They also do it to attract mates and mark territory. And the louder the noise is, the more impressive it sounds to other woodpeckers. So when they peck metal pipes and utility poles and stuff, they're not looking for bugs in the wrong place, they're being loud on purpose
  • Theres a family of birds in Central and South America called Antbirds. Not bc they eat ants, but bc they, to varying degrees, follow ant colonies and eat the bugs and small animals that are running away from the ants. Some, like the Bicolored Antbird, are obligate ant-followers, and get the vast majority of their food this way. Heres a Bicolored Antbird

  • male Temminck's Tragopans (a type of pheasant) have this bright blue bib thing they can unfurl/inflate in their mating display. Also this pheasant species nests in trees, which is uncommon for pheasants (they usually nest on the ground). but seriously look at this shit
Avatar
  • Boreal Owls are generally monogamous, but in years with abnormally high prey populations, both males and females tend to have multiple partners

  • Australian Owlet-nightjar (they're nightjars, not owls). Smallest nocturnal bird in Australia. Look at it.

I recently started working in hospitality, and I’ll tell you guys right now, the trope of “there was only one bed” is not as rare as you’d think in real life. A few times a week, at least, I have guys come in who are working together on projects in town or passing through who have to literally book the last room I have available for the night and lo and behold — there is only one bed, and guess what, they give each other a side-eyed look and begrudgingly take it. So write it up, it happens all the time!!!

Never let your There Was Only One Bed dreams die. I was secretly in love with my best friend for over a year when she graduated and moved to Oklahoma (like 1000 miles away) for grad school. Between that travel restrictions, we were so scared we’d never see eachother again.

At the end of summer, when Covid numbers were at a lower point, I took the risk to visit her in her new apartment and I quickly realized that, unlike when I’d spent the night at her house before, the couch wasn’t made up like a bed. She explained that since her new couch was so fancy and pink, I couldn’t possibly sleep on it, and so I needed to sleep in the bed with her. You know, out of necessity. I woke up with her snuggled around me in the middle of the night.

We’re dating now, and I genuinely think I’m going to marry her. Just the other day, though, I mentioned that if she hadn’t been weird about her fancy couch, I probably never would have like confessed my feelings. AND THEN she stood up, took the cushions off the fancy couch, UNFOLDED IT INTO A HIDE-A-BED, and said “I KNOW.”

THIS GIRL. ORCHESTRATED. BED SCARCITY. JUST SO SHE COULD MAKE THE “ONLY ONE BED” EXCUSE. Y’all when I said I just about lost my goddamn mind, I just about lost my goddamn mind. I love this sneaky bitch so much and the moral of this story is BE THE ONE BED YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

Costco has these artisanal peaches. My betrothed and I first had them while staying with some friends. They’re the platonic ideal of what an amazing peach should be. They’re peeled and preserved in juice whole, and somehow they taste slightly like vanilla.

When we got home from our visit we picked up a jar for ourselves. They lasted a good long while. We finally went to get more- and they were gone. I was devastated. That was two years ago.

Every Costco trip since then has included a hopeful look for the amazing peaches. I never stopped dreaming they’d come back.

My health has gotten better and with my improved energy I’ve finally been able to take over some of the chores. So when my betrothed lamented not having time for a Costco trip last week I volunteered to go alone.

I was meandering down the aisle and then I saw them. The peaches. The promised fruit I had been denied for two years, perfect and golden in that Costco aisle. Orchestral music swelled in my mind and everything around me faded away as I beelined toward them.

I was stricken with peach madness. I got four jars. Sitting in the car afterward I tallied the expense. The peaches were fully a quarter of the Costco bill. I texted my betrothed to apologize for absolutely losing my head. They reassured me over and over that it was a luxury I deserved to indulge and that it was okay.

Tonight while holding a dripping perfect peach in my hands, eating it while standing over the counter, each bite the exact ripeness to have a little give but not too much, and my mouth full of vanilla and peaches I contemplated going to buy more.

Never let anyone say that you can’t sell or advertise successfully on Tumblr because I literally read this post ONCE a couple months ago and then I saw these peaches at my local grocer yesterday and didn’t even hesitate to buy them.

Oh my gosh I hope you love them!

Recently, while staring far too long at a potato chip, it occurred to me that the ridges could possibly be used to create a lenticular effect. So I got out some chip dip (and the smallest paint brush I have) to test it out. I started with a simple 2-frame illustration of a football and a basketball, then I painted a little sour cream and onion dip bird. 🥔🕊️ - via my new @brockdavisart instagram
