why i think davenport is trans

So if my url didn’t make it obvious, Davenport being trans is really important to me. I see so much of myself as a transgender person (and even more specifically as a transgender man) in Davenport that I have a hard time explaining it all. But I’m gonna fuckin try.

In the most obvious way, Davenport is a short man with a high-pitched voice whose masculinity is never challenged or mocked or undermined.

In Davenport, I saw someone who built a specific image for himself. An image carefully constructed so that he would be taken seriously, so that he would be respected. As soon as Griffin talked about his high walls, I knew exactly what he was talking about. Because I’ve had to do it. Trans men are infantilized, invalidated, talked down to. So lots of us put up walls in the hopes that we’ll be taken seriously.

That image, through someone else’s mistake, is torn down around him. A competent captain reduced to a fool and a servant, his reputation dragged through the dirt and forgotten. When he dropped the silver tray, all I could think of is the times I’ve been publicly misgendered or outed. The moment when I realized that everyone’s perception of me has irreversibly changed in the worst way. That isn’t a feeling I’ve really seen in media before. The shame and helplessness and dread and wrath.

I can’t tell if I’m projecting those feelings, but I felt them all so clearly that I just started crying.

By then I was hooked. So I kept looking deeper.
