I've been having a lot of feelings about the downfall of quality lately.

I ordered a pair of Dickies pants because pants are hard and workwear is usually reliable. When they arrived they were the scratchiest, most papery material--I can't actually call it fabric in good faith--and fit a full three sizes too small. A week later I found the same pair in a thrift store, dated 2017. These are actual pants. They fit, they're not made of asbestos. They're only separated by time.

There's no wood used in interior design unless it's a custom build. I have a set of wealthy relatives who live in a condo. The downpayment for it was likely more money than I will see in my lifetime. The floors and the cabinets are all still laminate. I know I will never see real wood in a building constructed after 2000. Every "apartment hack" I see online has this very conspicuous, flat appearance because of all the paint and contact paper required to make these builds look personal in any way. The only natural materials are in the furnishings.

I've been harping on this for years, but everything is shit, nothing is designed to work, and "growth" and "profit" are just euphemisms for cutting corners until things are unworkable.

everything is more expensive, and everything is getting shittier.

"And so I went into the studio," Jordan continued. "And it was very awkward, as I made sounds like 'mmm' and 'ahh'. And then I kissed my hand a whole lot."
But he got the job done, and now he just hopes that everyone playing the game appreciates all the effort he put into helping make it happen—and keeps his very specific but vital role in the game in mind as they play.
"You think about that," he said. "You mull that over as you run around, you little horny perverts, with your little perverted roleplays, you randy bastards. You think of me."

slapping modeling clay around blindly without thought or purpose, i look down and find a perfectly sculpted replica of myself seated at a table with a lump of modeling clay before me, similarly shaped into a still smaller instance of the same scene. and i am afraid to look up

So there are rubber boas in my neighborhood (even though I've never managed to spot one while herping which torments me) and I know they're the northernmost boa species, which got me wondering: what adaptations do they have differently from other boas to account for that? How does a snake adapt for colder weather?

Avatar

Great question!

The biggest and most obvious difference from southern boa species: they're a lot smaller! Adult rubber boas can be as long as 2.5 feet but rarely scape 2 feet long. Snakes who live in colder climates tend to be considerably smaller because it takes less energy to keep them going and it's easier to warm up a smaller body.

Side note: my goodness, when they're tiny babies, they are the cutest snakes ever.

Another thing is most boa species don't really brumate as their habitats stay warm enough year-round they don't need to. Rubber boas do!

Rubber boas kinda traded the heat tolerance of most boas for cold tolerance, and while they can be found in cooler areas most other snakes (and certainly other boas) wouldn't ever consider, they have pretty low heat tolerance by boa standards. In captivity, they prefer ambient temperatures around 75 F - those would be cool-side temperatures for most other species! They cannot tolerate temperatures over 85 F at all.
