Teen pregnancy continues to fall

Teenage pregnancies in England and Wales have continued to drop, the latest figures show.

Office for National Statistics annual data shows the under-18 conception rate has dropped by 10% in a year.  The most recent figure is 27.9 conceptions per 1000 women aged 15-17, which is the lowest since 1969. Professor Kevin Fenton, director of health and wellbeing at Public Health England (PHE), said: ‘Today’s data show us high conception rates are not inevitable, if young people receive the right support.  ‘Teenage pregnancy and early motherhood can be associated with poor educational achievement, poor physical and mental health, social isolation and poverty, so it is vital this downward trend is continued. ‘PHE is committed to supporting local government and partners to further reduce under 18 and under 16 conceptions, and provide support for young parents, as an important route to tackling inequalities, reducing child poverty and improving public health.' The figures show that the conception rate among women over 35 is still rising and, since 1990, the conception rate for women aged over 40 has more than doubled from 6.6 to 14 conceptions per 1000 women. The data also confirms a continuing rise in the number of pregnancies and births outside marriage. Alison Hadley, an adviser to PHE on teen pregnancy, said: ‘Continued investment and dedication over the last 10 years has paid real dividends. ‘But the England under-18 conception rate remains higher than other western European countries. ‘We need to find ways to both sustain the significant reductions we've made and accelerate progress. ‘Evidence and lessons from local areas shows us young people need comprehensive sex and relationship education in and out of school, easy access to young people-centred contraceptive and sexual health services, and targeted support for those most at risk.’ For more information and to see the latest statistics, click HERE

Standards to improve jaundice in newborns NICE has issued a standard to improve the recognition and management of jaundice in newborn (from birth to 28 days) babies. Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common conditions needing medical attention in newborn babies. It is estimated that more than 430,000 babies – around 60% of all term and 80% of all pre-term babies – develop jaundice in the first week of life. The standard advises that babies should receive appropriate treatment for jaundice caused by underlying disease in order to prevent complications and achieve the best clinical outcomes, its early identification is essential. It says measuring bilirubin levels in babies with suspected or obvious visible jaundice is better than visual inspection at assessing the degree of jaundice and determining whether the baby needs further investigations or treatment. It adds that babies who are more than 24 hours old and suspected to have developed jaundice have their bilirubin level measured within six hours of jaundice being suspected. Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive at NICE, said: ‘The majority of babies develop jaundice in their first week of life, causing them no ill effects. 'In a very small proportion of babies, however, it is associated with underlying disease and has the potential to be serious. ‘It’s important, therefore, that the severity of the jaundice is properly assessed so that treatment, if it’s needed, can be provided in a timely way. ‘This new standard, by driving up the quality of care provided to newborn babies with jaundice and their parents or carers, will help to ensure that this happens.' If jaundice is not identified early and treated effectively it can result in kernicterus, a rare but serious neurological condition which is associated with long-term problems such as cerebral palsy, hearing loss and visual and dental problems.
