🧜🏻‍♂️ Danmei Book Recommendation: 人鱼陷落 Merman’s Fall by 麟潜 Lin Qian

(Edited)

Spoiler-Free Introduction:

• Short and attention-grabbing blurb (reminds me a little of the blurb of another novel, “The Person I Buried Alive”):

我必须把他抱回家养殖起来,家里没有浴缸和大盆,于是不得不把他暂时放进洗衣机里。
一个小时后我才重新记起这件事,此时他已经被洗得很干净。

My translation:

I just had to carry him home and keep him. There was no bathtub or big basin at home, so I had no choice but to temporarily put him in the washing machine.
This matter only came to mind again an hour later; by then, he’d already been washed to squeaky cleanliness.

• Genre/setting/key words: sci-fi, ABO, superpowers tied to different animal/plant/object characteristics, secret service/special ops, combat involving firearms—very interesting combo

If a Weeping Angel from Dr Who sent MCU!Steve into the past, what would happen? Would Howard stop searching? No Tesseract? No Daniel/Peggy relationship?

Avatar

It’s an interesting question on a couple of levels. The Weeping Angels send people back in time (if I’m remembering properly) so that they can consume the “temporal energy” left behind by the gap that person’s sudden lack of existence has caused, or something similar. But I wonder what happens when they do it to someone who wasn’t meant to be in that time in the first place. Steve didn’t time-travel so perhaps the point is moot, but he wasn’t meant to live three-quarters of his life in the twenty-first century, only scientific tampering on a very severe scale allowed that to happen. So I wonder if the angel who tried to do it wouldn’t like, glitch it up and end up starving because they “fixed” something instead of sending it awry. Though you could also use the glitch as a reason to have them send him back to the moment he went into the ice.

Which leads us to the second point of interest, in that the Angels didn’t choose a specific, meaningful moment to send people back to – they just zapped them away and wherever they ended up, that wasn’t the angel’s concern. So you could play it a couple of ways. You could have Steve waiting for Peggy and Phillips when they emerged from the radio room where Peggy just heard him die, as confused about what just happened as they are. Or you could have him zapped back to sometime in the fifties, which would keep the timeline of Agent Carter intact, not that I think that timeline is particularly interesting unfortunately.

But there’s a third option, where Steve ends up further back in his own timeline. There’s a lot of scope for storytelling there – you could have him go WAY back so that he influences his younger self growing up (ala Night Watch), or you could have him go only a few years back and enlist as a “normal” soldier, and end up as a masked superhero who eventually mentors his own younger self, perhaps even have him save the 107th before they can be captured, which obviously impacts Bucky’s timeline and the formation of the Howling Commandos (or you could have him deliberately NOT save them, so as not to contaminate his timeline).

And if he does contaminate his own timeline, he might prevent his other self from going into the ice, which either creates a paradox that reality can’t sustain (where he never went forward in time so could not have been sent backwards in time) or just sets up a new parallel universe where there are two Steve Rogers, depending on how you think time travel works best.

So I think there’s a lot to play with there!

This is interesting but I’m pretty sure Tony would save him or fallow him.

Heading to Pillowfort, and I’m Offering Keys

Hi, you may or may not know me. I go by Tyramir, and I’m an author. Mostly I write fanfic, but I have also published a book at some point. (Yes, that was a subtle plug – don’t feel obligated to click the links, they’re there to justify to myself why I’m doing this so I can say this wasn’t 100% altruistic because I’m a crusty old troll)

So, recently, Tumblr has made something of an announcement regarding what kind of content they will and will not host in the future. And you know what, that’s okay. It’s their site. They can do what they want. Just like I’m free to say, “Hey, @staff, go fuck yourselves with some sandpaper, you masochistic fucks.”

Ah, that felt good. You know what else feels good? Moving to Pillowfort. I’m in no way associated with them, beyond that I am now a user. I just bought a key. More than one, actually. I bought a whackload of them. I am not rich. See: author. Very poor profession if you’re not ultra-successful. However, what I am is angry, and disappointed with the direction this site is taking.

This site is home for the marginalised, for the outcasts, for the misfits. It’s also the home for a lot of fellow artists, like myself. Ones that might not have a little extra cash in their wallets. So, as a Christmas gift (and as a way of sharing that link up above advertising my book, see self, you’re not totally altruistic), I’m making this offer.

Reblog and like this post. You don’t have to follow me. You don’t have to buy my book. You don’t have to tell anyone it exists. You don’t even have to click that link. Just like and reblog. Anyone who likes it will get one entry for drawing for a key. Anyone who reblogs it will get one. Anyone who does both will get two. And on December 17th, the Day of Ignominy, I will draw ten names, and I will gift ten keys. I’ll even wear a Willy Wonka hat while I do. You won’t be able to see it, but the spirit will be there.

If you want to get the word out, but don’t want to get an entry (say you already have a Pillowfort account), just reblog and tag the post with “no entry,” or some variation thereof. I’ll exclude you from the draw, but thank you (in my mind, I’m not gonna actually thank people, but that requires effort, yo) for helping others learn about this opportunity.

TL;DR: Bald author wants to use very little cash he has to give people Pillowfort accounts. Just like and reblog for entries. Also, I hope you are feasted upon by a swarm of angry weasels, @staff.

Boosting. This is fantastic, @tyramir.

Yooooooooooo

Women pay more for products. Men pay more for clothing.

Do men really pay more for clothes?

Yea, seriously. Shirts, sneakers, jeans, socks…etc. Ask your male friends how much they pay for a pair of descent jeans. It’ll blow your mind.

At least their pants have fucking pockets tho

Are you sure?

Are you

(Walmart)

ABSOLUTELY SURE??

BECAUSE I’M NOT ENTIRELY CONVINCED

LIKE AT ALL

THAT MEN HAVE IT HARDER

(Victoria’s Secret)

OH AND SHOULD I BRING UP PANTIES WHILE I’M AT IT? I am a firm believer of the “fuck you, I’ll wear briefs that don’t give me a wedgie, I don’t care if they’re not sexy” policy, but a lot of women are expected to wear panties and thongs because GASP WOMEN MUST BE BEAUTIFUL AT ALL TIMES. Here’s a screenshot of some Victoria’s secret panties!

Wow. It’s almost as if there’s a pattern here.

Women are expected to buy more clothing, and literally all of it is more expensive, so fuck all of you.

*HAMMERS THE REBLOG BUTTON*

Fucking infuriating. And, NO ONE pays more for clothes than fat women. Tired of it.

Have you ever stepped on a Torrid? $50-$80 for a blouse.

^^^^^

Yup it totally gets more costly when you’re not model thin.

Woah

I’m here to confirm the fat girl comment…. decent fitting, CUTE plus size shit is just expensive as fuck.

As a trans person who has shopped for both mens and womens clothes, I can confirm that womens clothes are A LOT more expensive than mens - and women are expected to buy more as well. I don’t mean that women are expected to love shopping and want loads of outfits (although that expectation certainly contributes), I mean that womens shirts are sheer and they are expected to wear stuff underneath them, while mens shirts are opaque. Womens tops are flimsy so they have to wear cardigans or jumpers, mens tops are thicker and they can get away without. Womens clothes don’t have pockets so they’re forced to buy bags to carry stuff.

There is only one single exception to this that I can found. And that is underwear. I don’t mean lingerie like the Victoria’s Secret stuff above, I mean basic knickers vs basic boxers. A multipack of 7 knickers from Primark costs about £4. A multipack of 3 boxers from Primark costs £7. That is literally the only exception that I’ve found.

Of course, considering that a lot of women also wear bras that tiny concession ceases to be a factor once you add in the cost of a bra. Even a basic Primark one costs about £6 for one. That basic bras aren’t supportive, comfortable, long lasting, or anything else you need from a bra.

So yeah, men might pay a lot for their clothes. But women pay a lot more.

If you’re skeptical about the Pink Tax, you can do your own test at a local store. That’s literally what I did here, complete with photographic evidence of the pricing:

Her tuition so damn high she can wear whatever tf she wants

Spite goals

There’s a better thing to her story. She CONTINUED her thesis in her underwear and afterward her professor said “what would your mother think wearing those kinds of clothes”

And she responded “my mother’s a feminist also a gender and sexuality studies professor. She’s fine with my shorts”

i think the best part is that a majority of the class also stripped with her in solidarity

Just to give a little more perspective after reading the story:

The sequence of events is a little jumbled in the telling above. The actual chastising from the teacher came days before the woman’s thesis, during a practice run of her presentation. This was not a spur-of-the-moment thing where she just whipped off her clothes for the sake of being angry. Chai took the time to think things through before deciding this was the way she wanted to protest. She used critical thinking and level-headedness to decide instead of becoming volatile and aggressive, she would choose non-violent protest.

I just don’t like the way the story’s being told by others because it makes her come across as “overly-emotional” and “erratic” (as women often do in the media, because it’s easier to attribute extreme action to “hysteria”), whereas in actual news reports, she had time to think about her decision and choose the best way to handle what happened to her.

^^^ THIS.

i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?

a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”

so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency

and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy

Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).

The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.

When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.

Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.

It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.

Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.

And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.

How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?

Answer: not at all

200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Mr Collins.

honestly if you wouldn’t bond with a symbiote you’re a fucking idiot, like you get unbelievably powerful and sexy and all you have to do is what? not go in fire or listen to noises that sound bad? newsflash idiot i already dont go in fire or listen to noises that sound bad. dumbass. you gotta eat some living flesh once in a while? whatever dude easy shit

you dont even need to do that its canon that the symbiotes just need one chemical from people and its also found in chocolate so you get to be huge and sexy and eat a bunch of chocolate

With the right brain chemistry, you dont even need to do that. Phenethylamine, the chemical in chocolate that symbiotes crave, is naturally produced by your brain when you’re in love. Therefore, if you love and cherish your goth symbiote gf, you can be big and sexy with NO consequences.

LOVE is stored in the SYMBIOTE.

Once upon a time long ago there was a short piece of Fanfiction called Psychoanalyzing my Symbiote I believe by Dyce. It talks about this and was brilliant sadly I can’t find it to share it with you.

ERASE the idea that America saved lives by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan from your minds. ERASE the idea that it was anything more than a political move to scare Russia and also to satiate US curiosity as to the true ability of nuclear weapons. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were not military bases. They were heavily populated civilian cities chosen precisely bc the U.S. wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go. Japan was on the verge of surrendering, the U.S. literally wanted to test out their nuclear weapons on people that they deemed disposable. That is it. If those bombs were dropped by any nation other than the US veryone involved would have been tried as war criminals.

Also erase the idea that America was the hero of WWII and got into the war because they wanted so save people. They couldn’t have cared less about the victims of the Holocaust, proven by the fact that they turned away so many shiploads of refugees that went on to die at the hands of Nazis.

“the us wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go” oh really? Source your bullshit, asshole

i left out sources bc i figured most tumblr users know how to use google but ok

- Report produced by the U.S Strategic Bombing Group (employed by Truman) to survey the air attacks on Japan concluded that:

“Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey’s opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945 and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.” - page 52-56

- Dwight Eisenhower future president and then Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces also said:

I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to [the then Secretary of War] my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives.” - page 380

- Admiral William Leahy, one of the highest ranking officials in the US army during WW2 wrote of the usage of the bombs:

It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. […] My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.” - page 441

- General Douglas McArthur, another high ranking US official in the war:

[When asked about his opinion on bombing Japan] He replied that he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb. The war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the emperor.” - page 70-71

- On September 9, 1945 Admiral William F. Halsey commander of the Third Fleet publicly quoted as saying:

“The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment… . It was a mistake to ever drop it… . [the scientists] had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it… . It killed a lot of Japs.” - online source

- The US secretary of war, Henry Stimson, speaking to President Truman:

“I was a little fearful that before we could get ready the Air Force might have Japan so thoroughly bombed out that the new weapon [the atomic bomb] would not have a fair background to show its strength.” - diary of Henry Stimson which can be found online here

- Even those deploying the bombs questioned the decision to drop them on civilian cities:

I thought that if we were going to drop the atomic bomb, drop it on the outskirts–say in Tokyo Bay–so that the effects would not be as devastating to the city and the people. I made this suggestion over the phone between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and I was told to go ahead with our targets.” - online source

- Lewis Strauss Assistant to the Navy Secretary James Forrestal on the locations of the bombings:

I remember suggesting […] a large forest of cryptomeria trees not far from Tokyo. The cryptomeria tree is the Japanese version of our redwood… I anticipated that a bomb detonated at a suitable height above such a forest… would lay the trees out in windrows from the center of the explosion in all directions as though they were matchsticks, and, of course, set them afire in the center. […] Secretary Forrestal agreed wholeheartedly with the recommendation.” - page 145

So to recap:

  1. A lot of American generals were against using the bomb as they felt it served an empty purpose.
  2. Those who agreed with its usage completely disagreed with dropping them on cities.
  3. Truman went ahead and had them detonated in two highly populated civilian cities anyway. Two cities that had remained mostly untouched by regular bombings throughout the war precisely bc of their lack of value to the Japanese war effort.

Draw your own conclusions.

I hope y'all know that this is common knowledge to everyone of every other country
