helloooo i just follow from this blog bc it's my old main blog i actually post at @taricha !
<3
making no sense here and getting like too niche into my interests too late at night but in some fantasy world i would have loved like character-focused interior mini-episodes of hannibal shot like in the vein of something like. "meshes of the afternoon", "the shooting", or even "alice" by jan svankmajer. i would have loved some very intentional reference to experimental films. esp in season 3 or late season 1. maybe even a quay brothers situation. personhood, dreams, horror, otherworlds, destiny. a dream palace moment in one of those hidden, sorrowful rooms hannibal tells will about. exploration of abigail's cyclical tragedy through her perspective. will's deterioration of time and self through a degradation of visual reality, transported to increasingly rotted (or beautiful and horrifying!!) artificial tableaus. jack's exhausting, vexing search for answers in a vast landscape populated by the dead and the carriers of death. blah blah blahhh
ahh happy some ppl resonated with the post i'll write more abt it later <3
ok i have thought more...
abigail:
especially thinking abt meshes of the afternoon for inspiration for abigail here. the repetition, the self-reflecting imagery, the waking from a dream that never really ends. or is it a nightmare? or is it self-defense? a doppelganger, another "you", a surrogate death. this repeating of her own death, over and over again, in different stages of change.
will:
was thinking abt puppetry/animation for will because it's such a potent tool for representing a separation from identity, especially personhood, but also a growing into new skin. in alice specifically, there's a use of taxidermy, meat. literal re-animating of the dead. lots of will's thoughts already exist in this realm. street of crocodiles is another interior world explored through similar concepts. less content here than material, i think.
jack:
the shooting tells a story in a really vexing way. i think it's good inspiration conceptually for jack because it's a puzzle always one step away from completion. at the center is a frustrated character with a good heart plagued by a bizarre world that seems to get emptier and bigger, but as it warps and freezes it also gets more focused. but the ending is always just out of reach. the solution is never solved. there is always a victim, but there never seems to be a victor.
i'm still thinking on other characters, they just popped out to me. and i'll come back to add! but i see these as little interludes, like character studies. so sorry for the long post. maybe one day i'll script something.
thank u for reading ❤️
This is such a cool post! This is not really in the vein of your idea of more interior and character driven, which is super great and would actually work well in the show i think, but I’m prententious and I started thinking of other cool cinema references! For me I always wanted to see a hommage to Daisies / Sedmikrásky (1966), the feast scene. Like imagine in a season 4 scenario where Hannibal and Will indulge in the most hedonistic killing spree, cook and set the most decadent dinner, but the the actual feasting goes like this:
OHHH MY GOSH Daisies!!! SUCH a good movie!! This would be so cool, especially since Hannibal has such a reverence for food and presentation/relates it to things like love, sex, hate, violence, and kindness. A literal destruction of that would be so fitting!! I keep thinking of Chiyoh's line, "there are means of influence besides violence" (though i guess you could argue a scene like this would be violence in some way, it is kind of a "food fight" haha).
The feast scene is so iconic!! What a great concept, thanks for adding!
