[PS1 / SAT] [JAPAN] [MAGAZINE] [1996]
“Arcades were filled with the sounds of light gun games during the mid-1990s. Everywhere you looked was another Area 51, Point Blank, Time Crisis, House of the Dead or Virtua Cop.
Konami was no stranger to this, putting out its own new arcade game in 1995 called Crypt Killer, or Henry Explorers for the Japanese audience, which was ported to the PlayStation in 1997. Unlike all the above-mentioned games, this one was largely forgotten, and the home version tanked in review scores: 4/10 from IGN, 33% from Absolute PlayStation, and 3.8 from GameSpot.
Big name developers don’t often get hit with low review scores, and there’s no doubt as to what caused the low scores: it simply wasn’t as good as its competition. Time Crisis came out for the PlayStation in the same year, and when comparing the two, Crypt Killer has inferior level design, visuals, and gameplay mechanics.
“Crypt Killer is disappointing, especially considering it came from the creators of Lethal Enforcers” was a common refrain amoung reviewers.
That should be all that’s needed. No need for any more specific information, right?
The comparison to Lethal Enforcers is what interests me, as it leads to an odd conflict: Crypt Killer plays just like Lethal Enforcers, if not better.” ~@tangobunny, TangoPunk (#01)

Ever since tumblr cracked down on NSFW content, breaking my tumblr page and disabling the search bar, I’ve been e-homeless for a while. I’ve now switched to Pillowfort, so my new hangout is at https://www.pillowfort.social/TangoBunny !
A couple of important notes for people that held off on it like me:
1 - It still costs $5 to join
2 - Back when tumblr died, there was talk about all the tumblr lynch mob people switching to Pillowfort, which is the main reason I never tried it - I wanted to get away from people like that. Turns out that’s either completely untrue or they all got banned, because every single post I’ve seen on there is completely civil, it’s mostly just people posting their art and being nice.
Anyway, for anyone who’s already on Pillowfort or doesn’t mind paying five bucks for social media, I’ll see you there!
Collecting more and more!
Someone wake me up when there’s a free blog service that isn’t focused solely around smalltalk, pornography, advertising, or censorship.
Until then, I’m hibernating from social media nonsense. If you want to find me, I’ll be in a good Twitch stream chat, probably!
Another quick update:
I’ve pretty much stopped checking tumblr now.
Gonna try and get back into posting more regularly over at kawen.space (which uses Pleroma) because even though it’s a bit too much like Twitter for what I’m used to, it’s still better than twitter and tumblr and everything else I’ve seen.
I finally started getting the tumblr banner saying I have adult posts for review-- I think the reason it took this long is because there’s four years worth of image posts. Some correctly flagged, others not.
I still haven’t found a good alternative.
Mastodon/Pleroma is too much like Twitter for what I usually post - Most people there post in single sentences and lazy shitposts so it’s not worth checking, and all the other tumblr alternatives are focused on people who posted nothing but porn.
All this is doing is reminding me of how few people online post things I actually want to see. I like hearing about people as people, not just as accounts that post porn and momentary gossip that’s never worth reading again within minutes.
Aaaaa there’s a Mortal Kombat 11 exhibition event over on Twitch!
We all know and love bunny girls, but what about bunny guys? How often do girls thing about the bunny bros?
All I know is that they make amazing doujin material!
There isn’t really a good bunnysuit outfit made for actual guys in person.
It’s kind of surprising given how popular the rabbit with a waistcoat was in Alice in Wonderland, you’d think people would make a smart rabbit-lhemed waistcoat outfit for servers at hen parties and the such!
Sonya's P2 colour is red.
I wonder if Red Sonya was a reference to the comic book character Red Sonja or if it was just a coincidence.
How do you like Mortal Kombats more American style setting compared to more Japanese fighting games? And do you have any favorite characters? Asking this as a big Mortal Kombat fan.
I’ve always struggled with Mortal Kombat controls. It’s easy to understand light and heavy attacks in most Japanese games and how they affect speed/priority, but telling the difference between a standing low kick and a standing high kick in Mortal Kombat is much harder– they both seem to do roughly the same thing.
Block being a separate button in MK means I use it much less often, and when MK3 added a run button, it just added to the number of buttons I never actually use.
As for the style itself, I absolutely love the setting and soundtrack to Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. It feels otherworldly, because even though it has inspirations from Chinese martial arts, the stone architecture and vibrant character designs have a really good fictional consistency that make it feel like something entirely unique.
That said, I’m less keen on the Babalities and Friendships in MK2 which are fun easter eggs, but kind of ruin that unique dark action vibe that it has otherwise, and so find MK3 much worse because they went all-in with the silly nonsense. Babalities, Friendships, Animalities, Robot Men, Dudes with Guns, the arenas getting stuck on a tiny loop if you get uppercutted through the floor… it all feels less like the cool setting of MK1+2 and more like a trashy fan-game.
Favourite characters… Mileena always used to spring to mind in the past, but I don’t really have a definite favourite.
One thing I find interesting, on the topic of comparing American games to Japanese games, is that Chun-Li in Street Fighter II was one of the most popular characters, and pretty much every Japanese fighting game has the one ‘waifu’ character that everyone likes. In Mortal Kombat, Sonya was always the most boring character that nobody picked.
It’s rare to see every dude in a fighting game being far more visually interesting in terms of moves and identity than the lady!
