Even better, the comments to this Twitter post were an absolute FIRESTORM of mostly dudes explaining to her that dials can’t only have 2 positions (not true) and that it wasn’t a very good piece (not true) that she was being disrespectful to her teacher (don’t care) and that it was a sign of her stupidity/rabid feminism/intellectual laziness/misandry/etc. that she couldn’t see any “middle ground.” It became, in its way, a performance piece. I was absolutely mesmerised, even as I wished I could cock-punch people through the internet.

“Dials have more than one settimg” is the most hilarious response to this piece, because the implication of that statement is “just be a scootch more implicit in your own dehumanization. Not ALL the way. But like… a little more.”

“I’m tired of being shamed for having natural body hair.

“When I was twelve years old, I realised having body hair as a woman was ‘wrong’. I spent the next seven years meticulously making my body ‘right’.

"I now rarely shave a lot of my natural body hair, because I don’t want to. It helps me to feel like my body is mine, and I feel beautiful this way. Yet I am constantly told that I shouldn’t.

"Through pressure from the media and through everyday interaction, I am constantly, consistently, subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) told I must adhere to a sexist beauty standard which deems the natural state of the adult woman’s body unacceptable, even disgusting. Society is saturated with images and messages that tell me I should be ashamed of my choices, that tell me I do not have a choice at all but an obligation to meet these particular standards of attractiveness by removing my body hair. I am tired of feeling obligated. I am tired of succumbing to feelings of shame. I am tired of people treating my legs as a hilariously radical feminist statement. I am tired of this being a big deal.

"My choices about my body, as a woman and as a human being, should be the concern of nobody else but me.”

Why follow UnsettlingStories?

Well, um, I guess because people seem to think I write pretty-okay horror stories. Don’t take my word for it, though! Here’s some feedback on @unsettlingstories:

On the story Sade Smols:

On the story My Brother’s Fall:

On the story Beneath Our Feet:

Those are only three examples. There are hundreds upon hundreds of stories. All free, all horrifying, and all original.

Yes, I write every single one of these myself.

If this sounds like something you’d be into, try following @unsettlingstories for a while. You won’t be disappointed.

Me and my sister were tied to train tracks like in the old school movies and a train was coming. I managed to get us free just in time, then I found Vladimir Putin skulking round the desert and I discovered it was his plan. So then I pushed him off a cliff ☺️

real life unsettling horror story: if a woman in ireland has a fetus inside her with no chance of survival due to miscarriage, cranial deformity or other fatal fetal abnormalities, she has to carry that fetus until it no longer has a heartbeat, often risking sepsis and risk to her own life. if a woman has cancer and gets pregnant in ireland she has to stop her chemotherapy and carry the fetus to term (if she lives that long) or go to another country for a termination. #repealthe8th

Indeed.

I wish J.K. Rowling put more thought into the wizarding schools, I know she said there are only 11 HISTORICAL ones but come on, really? Saying that most wizards are homeschooled I feel is a lazy way out. It would be AMAZING for there to be more schools. One school for ALL of Africa? All of North and South America? That’s just stupid. Australia and New Zealand don’t even have one. Europe has three, but does she ever think about how taking kids from Portugal, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg into one school, same with Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Russia in Durmstrang, all of them speaking different languages? There is just a lot of issues I think with how she set this up, and China doesn’t even have a large school, which I think is bizarre.

I don’t know if there need to be more schools, but I imagine that the students would be distributed more evenly. I can only speak for Europe but it would make sense that Scandinavians, Australians and Germanic students would go to hogwarts because people from those countries are often fluent or native in English. Other students from all over the world might want to attend as well in order to experience an English speaking environment. Beauxbâtons would take students who speak Romance languages such as French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, but students from Spain and Portugal might also have the option to go to South America. Durmstrang would cater for the Eastern Europeans and some Mediterranean countries like Greece. It also seems that these schools would be big enough to take in a larger student population. This is just my opinion but I imagine that the European schools would have a much more international feel because this is my experience with European universities.
